Culture Reject is the solo project of Michael McDonnell, formerly of Black Cabbage. Drawing from the drowsy, elastic rhythms of traditional African and Cuban music and imbuing his compositions with a touch of multi-instrumental glimmer à la Sufjan Stevens, McDonnel formulated a style of sweet-yet-gritty folk that put him in the same company, soundwise, as Bon Iver and Grizzly Bear.
