I was growing up 75 miles up south of Lake Superior when that big freighter sank that cold November day in 75. I've been to that Lake a number of times and there is still a haunting feeling when I go there. I was 16 at that time, I am now 50. Memories of the television, and radio news reports come flooding back everytime I listen to this great ballad.

For years I thought this was a song about a shipwreck that had occurred in the 19th century, or something like that. I was stunned to find out that the "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" occurred in 1975!! R.I.P. Edmund Fitzgerald crew.

I remember this song when it came out in 1976! and it still has a "powerful" meaning to it.

Indulge me to say something else. The lyrics are great, the music perfect for this story of life and death on the great lakes. It has always played like watching a movie in my head every time I hear it. The music has an icy feel, like the lake herself. The beat has a heart beat feel. It is a wonderful tribute to those lost in that gale on superior. My love to all the family members.

I was in H.S. in '75. I recall being so touched by the account, then when Lightfoot released this song my heart just tore open. I can recite the lyrics verbatim to this day. what a perfect tribute to a tragic loss.
