What started back in the mid nineties as an experiment fusing youth culture and social action has turned into a multi-faceted, multi-faced creature called Bassnectar. It is the brainchild of Lorin Ashton, and it exists as an open-sourced musical project that is as diverse as it is heavy, as raw as it is meticulous and as fierce as it is imaginary.
Spanning the spectrum of sonic style, covering every genre imaginable, and smashing it into a collision of wobbling, perverted basslines, hypnotic hide-and-seek adventures and pretty much anything that strikes his fancy, Bassnectar combines sound and force with weight, calling the end product "omni-tempo maximalism" which basically means no rules, no limitations, and no hesitation in fusing the familiar with the strange, and the classic with the cutting edge.
At times remixing, collaborating, writing, DJing, performing live and working on constant social networking, Bassnectar's music is the lure, and social impact is the very sincere intention. "We are so blessed, and so deeply fortunate to be alive and awake right now...it's a basic truth, but it's very powerful. If each of us projects our genuine human empathy and pure energy outward I believe we can make a massive impact in our time."
Idealistic? Maybe. But with wall-to-wall shows night after night in city after city, with endless music being concocted and pumped out of the labs by a growing legion of collaborators and bass-scientists, and with an ever-growing fan base of loyal bass-freaks on the loose, maybe idealism isn't all that bad...

Influences
I admit that my whole life was completely changed by Nirvana and Metallica. I loved Smells Like Teen Spirit and I wasn't even a teen yet... i just loved the raw energy. One time i read an interview with James Hetfield of Metallica, and when asked who his influences were, he gave the nod to a list of bands i either hated or had never heard of (except Black Sabbath), and i remember being shocked, because i naively thought his influences would be Megadeth, Slayer, Pantera, etc....give me a break, i was like 13 or something. The point is, my influences are not necessarily how i sound, and they include everything from NWA to Simon & Garfunkel to The Cure to The Field Of Dreams Soundtrack to Sibilant & Metal Spark to Cannibal Corpse, Exhumed & Emperor to My Dying Bride to FreQ Nasty, Tipper, Ed Rush & Optical, to Frank Zappa to The Who to Boards Of Canada to REM to Salt N Peppa to Run DMC to Led Zeppelin to Grave to Disembowelment to Beethoven & Mozart to Mr Oizo, Mr Scruff, Mr Rogers, Mr Si Begg, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Mr Mayagi, to loma prieta earthquakes to native American flute music and the soft humming of my mother.I guess Bassnectar is an amalgamation of every sound i've ever heard, mixed with ultra wicked basslines...
