About

Description
Big & Rich formed in Nashville around 1998, when ex-Lonestar vocalist John Rich began collaborating with songwriter Big Kenny (real name: Kenny Alphin, who'd once led an outfit called luvjOi). The duo established a performers' roundtable at a local dive, and the event -- dubbed the "Muzik Mafia" -- soon gained a reputation for its casual eclecticism and notable special guests. The Mafia nights continued over the next few years, running concurrently with solo material issued by both artists, until 2003, when Martina McBride recorded Alphin and Rich's song "She's a Butterfly" for her self-titled effort and the duo landed a record deal of their own with Warner Bros.' Nashville outlet. Big & Rich debuted in February 2004 with "Wild West Show," a bold and modern country-rocker that displayed their unique high-low harmony vocals. When the Horse of a Different Color LP dropped later that spring, its Nashville polish was salted with Muzik Mafia irreverence (sample song title: "Kick My Ass").

Different Color eventually topped the Billboard country chart and hit number six on the Billboard 200, and made bona fide stars out of Big & Rich. But it was success on the duo's own terms, not Nashville's. After all, their album free-associated country-pop with hip-hop, and there was a dance remix of the hit single "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)" on the resulting collection, Super Galactic Fan Pak. But Big & Rich's success revealed country audiences' willingness to accept sounds that were broader and brasher than the usual contemporary country product, and they capitalized on that with the smash hit 2004 debut of Muzik Mafia protégée Gretchen Wilson. (Rich produced Here for the Party, and wrote or co-wrote many of its songs.) Big & Rich returned in November 2005 with Comin' to Your City, a gaudy record that hit the Top Ten and depicted the duo as pied pipers for their own mischievousness. The single "Lost in This Moment" announced the arrival of their 2007 album Between Raising Hell and Amazing Grace, which featured guest appearances from John Legend and Wyclef Jean along with a cover version of AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long."

WASHINGTON – The Save Darfur Coalition today named Grammy Award-nominee Big Kenny (Kenny Alphin) of the country music duo Big & Rich its December “Darfur Hero.” The program highlights individuals who are playing a crucial role in helping end the violence in Darfur.

Big Kenny has been an outspoken advocate for the people of Darfur since early 2006 when he met former Marine Captain Brian Steidle who served as an African Union observer for their mission in Darfur. Since then he has worked tirelessly to raise awareness about the ongoing genocide in Darfur – speaking about the situation at all of his concerts and in all of his public appearances and interviews.

“No matter where I am, I take advantage of every opportunity to raise awareness of the crisis in Darfur and demand action,” said Big Kenny in his blog posting on the Save Darfur website. “I would spend every nickel I could get my hands on to help these people. Darfur is the worst humanitarian crisis on our earth and it is time we did something to stop it – permanently.”

In April 2006, Big & Rich spoke and performed before an estimated 50,000 people at the “Save Darfur: Rally to Stop Genocide” on the National Mall in Washington. The duo again spoke and performed in September 2007 Voices to Stop Genocide rally in New York’s Central Park. Additionally, last October, Big Kenny traveled with his wife, Christiev, to Akon, Sudan. The couple delivered clothing, medical and school supplies, and musical instruments to the Kunyuk School for Girls.

“If these were our children in our neighborhoods, there is no way on earth we would tolerate such blatant abuses of humanity,” he added. “One by one we’ll grow into a voice that cannot be ignored.”

Most recently, Big Kenny spoke at the Nashville leg of the Dream for Darfur Olympic Torch Relay. The relay, which has also traveled internationally to countries with a history of genocide and mass atrocities, aims to urge China – as Sudan’s chief diplomatic sponsor, major weapons provider, and largest investor and trade partner – to use its unique position to lead the world in bringing and end to the ongoing violence and suffering in Darfur.

Big Kenny’s blog posting can be viewed on Save Darfur’s website here

blog post Big & Rich's Kenny Alphin's Letter From The Sudan

“The past 24 hours in the village of Akon have been the most incredible of my life. We were greeted on the runway by over 500 singing children and community members and leaders. David (Physician and friend David Marks is coordinating medical supply aid with Dr Luka Deng on the ground in Sudan) met with over 75 patients today and the line will be longer tomorrow as word spreads. From the school under trees, the clinic with not more than a roof and a table, to a public meeting where they all sang and expressed there appreciation of our visit and urgent needs, this trip has already surpassed my expectations.

Some thirty of the patients seen today had malaria. Most of them had to wade across rivers to come to school. Some walk three hours each way to get here. I’ve never in my life seen a more impoverished situation nor have I ever met more genuinely happy and appreciative people. They have fought for over 20 years for their basic freedoms, now they have to fight for their lives, the basic necessities of food, water, education and healthcare. Their main concern is to save their children. The aid we were able to bring will no doubt save lives.

We were able to arrive with all 20 crates of aid we brought from the US in addition to picking up a couple hundred survival kits from CSI for returning refugees. The trip has no doubt encouraged us all to take responsibility to help and improve humankind. A world with out prejudice!!

Love will lead the way,
Bk and the Team Akon
