dead prez, Torae and Marco Polo, Ralph McDaniels, COTN, and Brown Bag All Stars announced
it's bigger than hip-hop

Brooklyn, NY, May 12th, 2009
For Immediate Release
The lineup for the 5th Annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival is falling into place. With less than six weeks out BHF '09 is shaping up to be the Hip-Hop event of the year. Just added today - dead prez, Torae and Marco Polo and host Uncle Ralph McDaniels.

----------------------------
dead prez

Hip-Hop's freedom fighters dead prez have carried the mantle for social change and intellectual revolution for over 10 years. Steadfast in their commitment these social activists/artists are the true conscious of Hip-Hop. Stic Man and M-1 first burst on the scene as protégés of Brand Nubian's Lord Jamar. Jamar discovered them in New York and helped them sign a deal with Loud Records. But being the new kids on the block of a powerhouse label like Loud (home to the Wu-Tang Clan and Mobb Deep) wasn't easy. dead prez wasn't always Loud's priority but that didn't stop them from building a fan base around their over-the-top performances. They released the critically acclaimed "Let's Get Free" in 2000 which spawned the anthem "Hip-Hop." Other releases included 2003's "Turn Off The Radio", 2006's "Can't Sell Dope Forever" and several solo projects. On June 23rd they are releasing their new project with DJ Green Lantern entitled "Pulse Of The People."

----------------

Uncle Ralph

Returning to host for the fourth time is Uncle Ralph McDaniels. As host of the uber significant "Video Music Box" and founder of OnFumes.com Ralph is in may ways the heart, soul and inspiration for The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. Video Music Box was one of the first TV programs ever to feature hip-hop videos primarily. Created in 1983 it was one of the most influential shows to give urban artists mainstream exposure. Many artists from Nas to Wu Tang to Biggie to 50 Cent to LL Cool J made their debuts on Video Music Box. Although ostensibly a local New York show, Video Music Box has been a major factor in the growth of Hip hop music and culture. Ralph's latest venture OnFumes.com takes that same pioneering spirit to the purely digital medium.

----------------

Marco Polo and Torae

When it comes to beats and rhymes, Canadian producer Marco Polo and Brooklyn MC Torae don't play, just check the résumé. On his 2007 critically acclaimed album Port Authority, Polo recruited a who's who of MC's like Kool G Rap and Kardinal Offishall to ride over his hard-hitting, boom-bap instrumentals. Torae, on the other hand, has certified his rep as one of the game's illest lyricists in a similar fashion with remarkable wordplay on his highly touted 2008 street album Daily Conversation. So, in the spirit of great hip-hop duos, the producer and the MC signed with Duck Down Records (home of Buckshot, 9th Wonder, KRS-ONE, Sean Price, Smif N Wessun, and Kidz in the Hall) in 2009 to release their collaborative album Double Barrel.

Torae had this to add, "It's an honor to be included in this years BHF. I've been attending since day one as a fan & now to be part of the line up is amazing. People know I rep Brooklyn to the fullest, so to rock is what's up. Big shouts to [Festival Executive Director] Wes [Jackson], the Brooklyn Bodega, Duck Down Records & everyone involved in making it happen."

----------------

Also joining the festivities are March and April Show and Prove winners, Children Of The Night and Brown Bag All Stars. As finalists in the Show and Prove competition they have secured their spot on at least the second stage. They may still win the opening spot on the Main Stage. That will be determined after the May 'Show and Prove' on May 21st, at Public Assembly. 8thW1, Sleepwalkas, THOSE CHOSEN and Brokn English will be competing. Once the third finalist is selected, a winner will be chosen by Brooklyn Bodega. The remaining two finalists will play the second stage. For more info click here

--------------

dead prez, Torae and Marco Polo, and Uncle Ralph join Pharoahe Monch, DJ Premier, Styles P, Smif N Wessun, and J Period on the lineup.

DJ Premier returns for BHF '09
reputation is the cornerstone of power

Brooklyn, NY, May 7th, 2009
For Immediate Release
The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival announced today the addition of the legendary DJ Premier to the 2009 lineup.

This is DJ Premier's second appearance at the BHF. In 2008 he headlined along with KRS ONE and Buckshot. One of the few regrets from 2008 was Premier's shortened set. This will not be a problem in 2009 as Brooklyn Bodega, creators and producers of the Festival, jumped at the opportunity to bring back one of the greatest producers and DJ's in Hip-Hop history

------

Equally lauded as one half of Gangstarr with longtime partner Guru and as producer in his own right, Premier is a pillar of Hip-Hop culture. He has crafted classics for Notorious B.I.G. ("Unbelievable", "Kick In The Door"), Jay Z ("Friend or Foe", "So Ghetto"), Nas ("Nas Is Like", "New York State of Mind") and host of others including The Black Eyed Peas, Snoop Dogg, Christina Aguilera, Ludacris and 50 Cent. However, what has made Premier so unique is that while he has remained the go to guy for the best in the game, he has always remained true to his underground roots. MOP, Big L, Mos Def, J-Live, Common, Dilated Peoples as well as developing acts Torae, NYG'z, and Blaq Poet have all also worked with DJ Premier.

"DJ Premier is simply one of the greatest. Not only musically but professionally. Who else, producer, mc, or executive, has remained not only intensely relevant but truly dominant for this long. Let us not forget [Gangstarr's] 'No More Mr. Nice Guy' dropped 20 years ago. Today he is still making hits for everyone from Maroon 5 to Termanology. After what Premier did for Notorious B.I.G. on 'Ready To Die' he became the anchor for Hip-Hop. You made your pop track for radio but you had to have your Premo track for true Hip-Hop heads," writes Festival Executive Director Wes Jackson. "I have always admired that while Premo was working with these huge acts and making good money he never let fame, success, or finances stop him from working with who he wanted. He has always stayed true to the art. He answered calls and delivered hits for MOP and Royce [the 5'9'] just as quickly as he did for Nas and Jermaine Dupri. I want to thank Premier and his manager Phat Gary for helping us make our 5th Anniversary something for the record books."

-------

DJ Premier joins Pharoahe Monch, Styles P, Smif N Wessun, and J Period on the lineup. Next week Brooklyn Bodega will be announcing several more Main Stage performers as well as the first round of Second Stage performers.

The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival 2009 will take place on June 18th, 19th and 20th. Events include a retrospective photo exhibit of the first four years, a kick off party, Family Day, The Main Day, and the Official After Party.

Family Day and Main Day are June 20th at Empire Fulton Ferry State Park, 1 Main Street, in DUMBO Brooklyn from 12p.m. - 8 p.m.

--------------

The official After Party will take place at Southpaw 125 Fifth Ave. in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Lineup TBA.

Venues for the photo exhibit and kickoff party will be announced shortly.

Check www.brooklynbodega.com for more info.

Tickets for the Main Day are available for only $10 at brooklynbodega.com and Fat Beats New York, 406 Avenue of the Americas # 1, New York, NY 10011, and (212) 673-3883.

Patrons buying online will be able to participate in the Subscriber Partnership Program, which will entitle them to premiums from our various sponsors. Details to follow.

blog post May "Show and Prove" Semifinalists - THOSE CHOSEN
Category: bk
Posted: May 06, 2009 at 3:56 PM
Family,

We promised to you that each week we'll feature 1 semifinalists. Consider this a preview or a getting to know them better session. In addition, you'll understand why these individuals were chosen. This week's feature is : THOSE CHOSEN

We reached all the way out to La La Land to scoop up THOSE CHOSEN.
No co-sign, just some hot beats and rhymes that we found in the inbox.
Turns out they have a track record that we were not up on.

They got the email to rock at Show and Prove and booked the flight immidiately.
That’s what’s up, as the kids (in Philly) say.

——–
THOSE CHOSEN consists of Japetto, Kornbread, and Foreshadow. Out of their common love of music, the trio formed a musical brotherhood that has lead them on a journey to become a premiere hip-hop group within the ever-changing music scene.

TC has worked with some of the brightest and best producers in hip-hop such as the Grammy-winning super-producer, IZ Avila of the Avila Brothers. They have also collaborated with new-wave/funk artist, Miss Jack (of J*Davey) to produce a record titled, “The Unseen World”.

The group has shared the stage with hip-hop legends such as Slick Rick and rising stars like Little Brother and Black Milk. They have been a constant staple in California’s hip-hop scene and have gained a presence on the internet, which has lead to an ever growing buzz concerning their music.

The group has released, “Reign Food”, a “street album”, available for download on their myspace page and music blogs. “Reign Food” is driven by dynamic lyricism, but the record also has vivid story telling that ranges from estranged relationships (i.e. Crutch) to feel-good vibes (i.e. The Feeling) to triumphant glory mode (i.e. Own Lane , All in All). The album boasts of production from hip-hop’s brightest new producers like Los Angeles’ own THX and Dibia$e, along with Northwest beatmonster Dual Output, a protege of hitmaker Sha Money XL.

The group raises the bar for hip-hop with their lyrics, pulsating beats and phenomenal live performances. Lovers of music will continue to focus on Those Chosen as the group gains more steam by the minute!
