No one ever said
Life in the ghetto
Would be easy;
But did we expect
For the hood to grow
Awful and sleazy?

Children grow up
In dilapidated homes
And broken families,
Hoping that one day
Their goals and dreams
Will set them free

This is the future
Harsh poverty fosters;
But their smiles glow
Despite the terrors
Surrounding their lives
In this world they know

Nothing is their fault;
Just because they were born
With dark hair and skin,
To the world it's a signal;
Recruit these naive souls
Into a life of wretched sin

Because of struggles,
Friends often grow closer
Than siblings of blood;
Going through the motions
Now means only a trifle
Like puddles of mud

Even as cruel society
Seeks to pull them down,
These kids will not fall;
Ghetto life teaches one
How to be a survivor:
Keep smiling through it all.
