blog post foreign language support
Posted in Dalton's public journal on Aug 16, 2005 at 11:58 AM

So one interesting thing about seeing the press go out is to seeing articles or blogs written in foreign languages.  Firefox decides to format characters that it does not recognize as being installed on my computer as question marks.  I get a kick out of seeing text that looks like this (which evidently needs a japanese language pack):

imeem ????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????imeem ????????? P2P ??????????????????

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Blog??????IM??????????????????????????????????????imeem ????????????????????????? AES ????????

?? CEO ? Dalton Caldwell ??????????????????imeem ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

When I glance at it, it seems like I am reading an email from someone that is very, very, very confused about something.  Like, confused to the point of flipping out and holding down the "?" key on the keyboard while yelling.

If I were designing that software, I probably would have picked something besides a question mark for foreign characters.

Hi everyone! imeem 1.0 is now released.

Thanks for being part of our beta.  It's been a pretty wild ride so far and I am looking forward to what's going to happen.

Nothing is more exciting than seeing your ideas come to life.

blog post Uncyclopedia
Posted in Dalton's public journal on Aug 05, 2005 at 2:27 PM

I have just seen a great new use of Wiki technology, called Uncyclopedia.  It uses the Wikipedia open source engine (aka MediaWiki), so it looks and feels exactly like Wikipedia, but without all of the useless "standards" or attempts to put so-called "real" or "factual" information in it.

I hope high school kids all over the world start using Uncyclopedia for book reports about the "United States of Armenia" http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/United_States_of_Armenia

or say Animal Farm: http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Animal_Farm

or even to make use of some choice Oscar Wilde Quotes: http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Making_up_Oscar_Wilde_quotes

Yes, Uncyclopedia is a great educational resource.
