Dim Mak

Foreign Born

After spending the post-collegiate summer of 2003 getting drunk at other people's weddings, Lewis Pesacov and Matt Popieluch decided
it was high time to start yet another band. The two met while attending
San Francisco State University and had been playing together for a
handful of years in various incarnations.

After playing a few shows, Lewis and Matt went down to LA to clean up their rough demos with Lewis' longtime friend Ariel Rechtshaid , who suggested they re-record the demos with himself on bass and Garrett Ray
on drums. The results were promising enough for Lewis and Matt to quit
their menial jobs and move down to LA that spring where the current
line-up of Foreign Born was, yes, born.

The band released their " In the Remote Woods " EP on Startime International in the summer of 2005, followed by the limited edition " Loud Times in the Valley " EP on local LA label Grand Gallop, and is planning to release their first proper full-length , "On the Wing Now" on August 21st on Steve Aoki's Dim Mak Records .

Foreign Born produced and recorded " On The Wing Now " themselves before signing with Dim Mak , trading on the experience and accumulated recording gear of bassist Ariel Rechtshaid, who has produced albums for We Are Scientists and The Blood Arm ,
among others, as well as the arrangement skills of guitarist Lewis
Pesacov, who has a degree in Composition. The band pressed the
original version of the finished album themselves with hand-screened
covers on recycled materials and hit the road for the fall of 2006.

Touring in support of their just-finished album , Foreign Born
found themselves on the road at home and abroad with We Are Scientists,
Giant Drag, Rogue Wave and the Cold War Kids. For both of their tours
in the fall of 2006, they navigated the US and Canada in a borrowed van
powered by vegetable oil, finding their fuel behind the nation's finer
roadside dining establishments. At home they've shared bills with The Futureheads, The Walkmen , and Grizzly Bear , whose guitarist Ed Droste called Foreign Born his "favorite new band " in a recent Pitchfork feature .

Their sound is a dark, acoustic, psychedelic mixture of influences
that range from Roy Orbison and John Lennon to the Fall, Primal Scream,
Jesus & Mary Chain and Brian Eno; the varying tastes and
backgrounds of the individual members informing their arrangements.
Guitarist Pesacov's formal education keeps the compositions tight and
strongly constructed, while singer Matt Popieluch tends to do quite the
opposite, with winning results. Although it is usually Matt and Lewis
who come up with the songs' foundations, bassist Ariel Rechtshaid and
drummer Garrett Ray play an equally important role in shaping the
songs' structure and arrangement.

Having just signed with Dim Mak , Foreign Born is excited to release " On the Wing Now "
and is already looking forward to their next album, having amassed
enough material to fill another disc. During the touring and recording
lulls, the band busies itself with multiple side projects, including
Lewis' African-themed Fool's Gold, and Matt's Big Search, Ceramic
Isles, and occasional sideman duty for Cass McCombs.

Scanners-Come-To-America Tour Wrap Up! Dim Mak Loves Scanners!!!!

DIM MAK RECORDS UPDATE -- THE SCANNERS CAME TO AMERICA AND CONQUERED!!

Hello Everyone!

We don't usually dedicate entire emails to one topic, but we've made an acception for this momentous tour. Scanners came to town on July 11th and did a week long tour of the west coast that left a wake of fans in their path and a lot of great memories. I had the great pleasure of touring with them and am glad to present to everyone this special glimpse into what the tour was like. We've compiled a bunch of video that documents the highlights of their trip. Some of it is shot with pro-cameras, but a lot of it is shot by Scanners with their phones. While the phone footage is not the best quality, it displays a personal image of the band that has a quality all unto its own. Read below while Mat Mole from Scanners maps out their tour for you. Feel free to reach out to us with any questions about, or testimonials from their tour. We're always available at info@dimmak.com.

*********'SCANNERS IN AMERICA' TOUR JOURNAL*********
Monday 10th July
Arrived at LAX in the evening having been finger printed and photographed
several times. Got picked up by Luke and Jacob, two great guys from the
Dim MAk team. Luke drove us through Beverly Hills and Sunset strip to give
us our first taste of LA, and we stopped to have our first taste of proper
hamburger. A bit dazed and confused we crashed at the Dim Mak HQ.

Tuesday 11th July

Had our first 'Hollywood breakfast' on Sunset Bvld. Pancakes..very sweet.
Spent the day sorting out how to convert the British power on our
equipment to American- who said rock n roll was just all fun!!
Went for sound check at Cinespace only to find out we werent gonna get one
after all! Headed back to Dim MAk office to chill on the patio with a
couple of beers and wait for Steve Aoki and Steve from Imeem.com
Had an amazing Japanese meal with Steve and Steve and the biggest bottles
of beer any of us had seen. Jet lag was rearing it's ugly head..no more
beer!
At Cinespace we watched the first half hour of the new movie 'A Scanner
Darkly' then played gig - along with Hourly Radio and Luxxury
Gig was great- people dancing. Aoki in other room dj-ing. Peaches
celebrating her album release. Then all back to Club Dim MAk for a party
till the early hours

Wednesday 12th July

After not much sleep we were off to Warner Brothers. Had a bigger meeting
than we were expecting with about 10 Warner Bro employees. All were very
nice about album. They let us help ourselves to any albums we wanted from
their vaults... We came out with two boxes. Then we met up with a friend
for more Japanese food.

Got to soundcheck at Club Moscow at 6pm. The jet lag was reaching its peak
and we all felt like shit. Sarah had an interview with Swindle magazine-
half way through the interview she found out it was about fashion NOT
music. It was a brief interview.
Before the gig we went to the famous Chinese Theatre and saw the hand and
foot prints of the movie stars. After a lot of searching Sarah eventually
found Marilyns which made her day.
After a bit of ID agro..they are vvv strict about it in the US- we did
gig at Club Moscow. Its a cool looking place - like a gothic castle. We
played outside with lots of candles everywhere. Really enjoyed the gig.

SCANNERS TAKE OVER HOLLYWOOD!!!!
Great press on Scanners Cinespace show that came in Wednesday morning 7-12-06

Gettin free CDs at Warner Bros. Thanks Mike!! **Tom's Camera**

Thursday 13th July

Left early for San Francisco. It was a hot 6 hr drive on Route 5. It's a
beautiful city. We were playing at Popscene (indie night club [run by Aaron Axelsen of Live 105]) After
soundcheck we had a fantastic Italian Meal in North Beach with Roy the
soundman and Popscene bar manager Josh. Two bottles of Chianti later we
went to a famous bookstore where Allen Ginsberg used to read his work. Got
to Popscene at 11.30 for gig. Rockin gig. Everyone dancing. Supposed to
crash at a girls house that night but we end up some posh hotel..result.

Friday 14th July

We get up and set off to see the sights of San Francisco. We drove over
the Golden Gate Bridge which was, unfortunately, completely covered in fog-
then off to Haight and Ashbury to look at the shops. Have a famous San
Francisco Buritto in the late evening - then head back to Hollywood. Even
after 6hours on the free way, Luke (on a caffine buzz) takes us up into
the Hollywood hills to see the view at 4 in the morning.

Haight and Ashbury **Mat's Camera**

Saturday 15th July

No more gigs until Monday but we got photo shoots instead. We went to this
kooky little studio/appartment owned by Jeff Electric with bullet holes
through the door. We did two shoots with brilliant photographer Dan Monick
for Swindle and YRB Magazines. He took some shots on the stairs where
Laurel and Hardy filmed their famous short 'The Music Box'!!!
Amina had got bitten by some mosquito or flea and the bites had got
infected. She had to be taken to a Doctor in the end as the infection got
so bad it was difficult for her to walk. This made it more difficult to
get some of the things we needed to do done. Luckily she had health
insurance.
Steve Aoki was dj-ing at the club LAX. So we went down for a bit minus a
sick Amina...then we went to a warehouse party but like everything in LA
it all closed early. We met up with Steve later at Dim MAk HQ and we
stayed up all night drinking vodka Luke had stashed away somewhere.

Cobrasnake pics of Scanners hanging out at the office Saturday Night, before LAX (top four pictures)

Sunday 16th July

Went to Ameoba Music store and got some records. Then drove up to the
Hollywood sign for a photo shoot with girl skating magazine Check It Out Mag, and met three lovely girls Liza, Mandy and Ana-Paula. It was hot in the hills but the views were amazing.
We hadn't seen the beach yet so we squeezed into the lovely Heather Pegg's
car and drove to a restaurant on the beach for some seafood and Mai-Tai's
at Dukes. Got to see the Pacific for the first time and eat really well,
and all on the Beatles, thanks guys.

Monday 17th July

We knew this was going to be a busy day. We have two gigs and a radio show
to do. But first we had a photo shoot for Dim Mak clothing line wearing
Dim Mak T-shirts with photographer Ronnie and Russ. Luke stood in the road
diverting traffic with his arms crossed like some kinda superhero. Then
we took a trip to Adidas in Santa Monica and we helped ourselves to lots
and lots of clothes which was good as all our old stuff needed a wash.
Back in the car and straight to Star Shoes for first soundcheck of the
day. This was for the gig we were playing at The Rakes' aftershow party.
Then off to the famous Troubadour for the second soundcheck. Very excited
at playing at such a historic place. We were first on supporting The
Rakes. Had a really good gig. Great crowd. Couldn't stay to see the rest
off the show cos we were off to Indie 103.1 radio to perform a couple of
songs on Danny Masterson's show 'Feel My Heat'. We played 'In My Dreams' and 'Air164' with acoustic guitar. The team there were really nice and we were really happy with our performances.

We got to Star Shoes really late. The place was packed. The keyboards
weren't working cos of technical sound guy issues which cut our set in
half. The gig was a hot and sweaty and everyone rocked out.
Once again everyone came back to Club Dim Mak till late. Again we did not
get to sleep till past six in the morning. Maybe never getting any sleep
will help us avoid jet lag when we get back to the UK. We'll have to
see...

Scanners and Dim Mak tie the knot!!
Scanners officially sign to Dim Mak

blog post sxsw: the end
Posted in SXSW on Mar 25, 2006 at 3:07 AM

I'm still FUCKING AWAKE... popping vitamins like they're E to europeans.
i might be more healthy now than i was when i wasn't traveling this
much. fucking a, last week was insane.. every week is insane but fucking
a last week was insaaane. SXSW has always been kerraaazzzy and whenever
dim mak has thrown a showcase it's always been good. this time we did at
blender bar and that place is HUGE but well deserved for THE RAKES,
MOVING UNITS, PONY UP!, LION FEVER, FAVORITE SONS, DJ MIKE RELM. so here
we go starting off from where i last left off from my last blog which
was Marquee in NYC march 8th...

QUICK RECAP FROM MARCH 10TH to end of SXSW...

It's been awhile since i was down at Belo in San Diego for their Rocket
Fridays. I'm only going to be doing those Fridays down there once/twice
a month.Last saturday March 11th, I came back to LA for the Dim
Mak/Cobrasnake SAMPLE sale during the day. (pic here) We just launched
DIM MAK COLLECTION, the fashion line at Magic couple weeks back and we
were selling one offs and samples. Most you'll be able to buy online at
some point. Next time we throw our sample sale daytime thing i'll post
it for all you LA people. Hot Lava at LAX as usual was packed that
Saturday with me and Benji Madden djing, (pics here) HANGOVER Fridays at
SPIDER with resident djs Rawley and Papperazzi (MOSCOW) with special
guest POET NAME LIFE, otherwise known as BLACK EYED PEAS producer &
Chris Bletzer from NYLON djed as well. Tuesday rolled around and I stuck
around to dj NYLON for GUYs party at the ROOSEVELT HOTEL with host Adam
Brody and dj buddies Benji & Joel Madden.  (flyer) That was earlier in
the evening then walked over to CINESPACE where NINE BLACK ALPS,
AMUSEMENT PARKS ON FIRE, THE FIGURINES, & special live performance/dj
set by UFFIE from FRANCE. I LOVE UFFIE!!! SHE IS FUCKING AMAZING!!!
Reminds me of a white Euro electro version of ROXANNE ROXANNE from old
school hip hop days.

**** SXSW PART******

Off to AUSTIN for SXSW. Flight 6AM Wednesday Morning. Get in to Austin
just enough time to get to GIG #1 of SXSW - BLENDER PARTY for 20 YEAR
ANNIVERSARY FOR SXSW with ECHO and the BUNNYMEN & SPOON (flyer here).
Finished that off sober then for Day 2 Thursday  March 16th.

Highlights from day 2/thursday: djed the FADER/LEVI'S HOUSE. (flyer
here) Getting free-Vied up with some Andy Warhol/Levi's denim from good
buddy Sherri. Eagles of Death Metal live. Jose Gonzalez covering
Heartbeats live FUCKING UNBELIEVABLE!. HEAVY METAL PIZZA. DIM MAK
SHOWCASE with  THE RAKES, MOVING UNITS, PONY UP!, LION FEVER, FAVOURITE
SONS, DJ MIKE RELM @ BLENDER BAR. CHeck out pics up at
thecobrasnake.com. (pic here) The Adidas Dim Mak Cobrasnake Tote Bags -
pic here. FIRST EVER COLLABORATION THAT ADIDAS HAS EVER DONE FOR A
PARTY. Go Alice! Dim Mak, Suicide Squeeze and Militia Group get together
in the daytime at Latitude. Then all night party action - three
different events i was scheduled to dj - BLACK BOOK PARTY, ADDVICE
PARTY, RED BULL PARTY all got broken up either from drunken fights or
cops coming down on helicopters. FACTORY PEOPLE/NYLON MAGAZINE late
night hours starting out at around 3am with THE GOSSIP LIVE!! FUCKING
INCREDIBLE!! THE PRESETS LIVE!! FUCKING INCREDIBLE!! mind you this is
already almost 5AM. And people are FUCKING ON!  Tommie Sunshine/Adam12
She wants Revenge/ Queenz of Noize DJ sets... that night was so GOOOOD.
Then Brick eventually got me out of there to make sure i get on my 7am
flight to VERMONT to dj the US OPEN FOR SNOWBOARDING (image here). I
landed in Albany, NY - 2 hour drive through country to STRATTON, VT for
BURTON's US OPEN. http://www.usopen-snowboarding.com. Watching
snowboarders fly upwards past 20 feet out of a quarter pipe LIVE. Much
different than watching on TV. HORRIBLE BAND CKY played and later I djed
the GRAVIS PARTY til 2am. Go DOM!! Left for the airport at 3am to go
back to SXSW. Arrived in AUstin 12 Noon Saturday for DAY 4 for SXSW.

Highlights from Day 3 of SXSW/Friday Dim Mak Action as told by LUke
Mulderink - update.

"No Dim Mak events during the day on friday.  We regained our strength
and chilled a bit gearing up for our event that evening.  Our second
showcase of SXSW was that night. This one was with our awesome friends
at V2, Tokion, Cobra Snake, and Kr3w. (view photos click here) All the
bands from our Thursday night showcase played, along with Margot and the
Nuclear So and Sos, the Meligorve Band, Something for Rockets and The
Adored on the V2 stage.  Mike Relm rocked a set at the downstairs
stage, getting the party started and setting the stage for Lion Fever.
Lion Fever fucking killed it!!  They ended their set with a rockus
entry into the audience by singer Jennifer and guitarist Casey.  They
came out and started fucking with the crowd, dancing and singing in
their faces.  Jennifer was knocking people's beers out of their hands
and ended up getting in a fight with some chick in the audience.  The
two of them were rolling around on the ground sucker punching each other
until somebody finally realized they weren't fucking around and got in
between the two of them to break it up. Pony Up followed Lion Fever.
They played one of their raddest sets I've ever seen.  The chemistry
between those girls is touching.  They all have so much fun together on
stage.  Peaches brought her girls out to dance to her DJ set.  Five
girls all with differing outfits stripping all throughout the set until
there was nothing left.  David Allen from Gang of Four stood behind the
DJ booth watching it all go down spinngin his tracks along side
Peaches.  the crowd was crazy for it, dancing and laughing.  Moving
Units came on and the room exploded.  The place packed out and the
audience danced like mad.  Blake and the boys were in full form.  The
Rakes ended the night.  Their set was dope as always and actually
started with a mosh pit that got some lame rockabilly dudes kicked out
of the club by force.  That's how hard The Rakes rock out!  After
that, the mosh pit ended and it was sweaty dancing and pure love flowing
in the room while the Rakes played tracks from their Dim Mak release
"Retreat."  The showcase ended and the people leaked out.  Then we
were off on that nights wild drunkin goose chase for the best after
party."

Highlights from DAY 4 for SXSW/SATURDAY.

ZERO "good" sleep. in the last 3 days in exception to sleeping in cars
and planes. But fuck it, its SXSW and the US OPEN! AUSTIN AND STRATTON
in the same weekend. who would have thought.. anyways, DAY 4 started
right when i landed. I came by the DIM MAK DJ SETS at FACTORY PEOPLE for
NYLON that went from 12-7 with MOVING UNITS, THE RAKES, THE LIKE, PONY
UP!  LION FEVER, HEY WILL POWER!, PEACHES - WHO PERFORMED NEWWW SONGS
THERE, AND ANNIE. Peaches guest vocaled on the Bloc Party Remix that
Weird Science did for the Helicopter single that we released. And in the
near near future Dim Mak will be releasing an ANNIE EXXXCLUSIVE 12" with
brand new tracks. The Like are our super buddies from LA, and Will Power
is another rad buddy from the Bay. NYLON/FACTORY PEOPLE RULED SXSW EVERY
YEAR!! day and night. especially late late night. Came back to my home
base the FADER house and tackled BE YOUR OWN PET before their hundreth
interview and planned to revisit our partying nights in TOKYO during
SUMMER SONIC. YOu should see the videos... Jonas and Nathan are KARAOKE
KINGS. Be prepared for the single DIm Mak will be releasing in the next
few months by BE YOUR OWN PET with exclusive songs not on the album.
LADY SOVEREIGN can charge up a crowd. LAVENDER DIAMOND was like seeing
Karen Carpenter sing for ANimal Collective. One of my favorite LA bands
now. Swishahouse DJ set with a chopped and screwed version of "Since you
been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson. Ghostface Killah live. Check pics here.
And on to last two events of SXSW that I djed for Saturday. URB/SAUZA
Party with live set by Domino and GANG OF FOUR. (click here) and DJ MARK
RONSON all up on on the top of parking lot. One of the best sound
systems in Austin that i heard. Who knew that Elijah Wood was a big fan
of GANG OF FOUR. Then at 12 midnight i left to go to the BURN LOUNGE
party with free alcohol courtesy of VESTAL. MOVING UNITS slayed once
again. Their set is mainly new songs from their upcoming album that will
eventually be coming out on DIm Mak. Later THE SOUNDS and OURS
performed. WEIRD SCIENCE also did a Dj set together which was easy since
blake and i were both already there. TOMMMIE SUNSHINE was scheduled to
close out the night but the sound people at GUERRERO PRODUCE where the
event was wack. The party was one of the bigger parties i was at and
blew the roof off. (pics here) But the night didnt end here. We then
went to the VICE FINALE party where WOLFMOTHER played and PAVLOVIC THE
PAV MAN - best buddy from Australia was there and THE SUROOSH was in
full form. Leila was giving out free ice cream and the lines to the
bathroom was like getting into a BLOC PARTY concert. everyone's pissing
everywhere they can and SPARKS was flowing like usual. Eventually we
made it back to Bryan Ling's hotel room to end the decadent partying of
SXSW MADNESS which is where i am now writing this blog tired and ready
to go to sleep for real.
