I worked on the ride, and had the opportunity to meet him and talk about the score, which he wrote specifically for the attraction. It's was, initially just a combination of alot of his other scores. But he was so moved by the images and the great length that Disney went to get these images. (BOY IS THAT A GREAT STORY ON ITS ON) that he decided to write a brand new piece. Which still sounds very Goldsmith. This is one of the most perfectly written pieces of music I have ever heard. Ill tell you, working at the attraction for days on end, the song never gets old...NEVER!!! This piece is an original by Goldsmith. The others you hear while waiting in line are from various composers including Goldsmith, but are, in fact, taken from other movie sources. "The Right Stuff", "The American President", "Air Force One", etc.

It's ALL Mr. Goldsmith, I assure you. But thanks anyway, Cailey.

Whenever I go on Soarin' over California, I never really paid attention to the music, but to the images and effects the ride had.
After reading Aaron Frickes response, though, next time I'm on the simulation, I think I'll just close my eyes and listen.
c:
Aaron Fricke, you are brilliant.

Sure hope that you're able to make this a Disneyland tradition, Princess N. I know there's talk, if not outright plans, to revamp the CA Adventure area where "Soarin'" is placed. What a shame it would be if this attraction disappears. Somehow, I suspect it won't.

Now I'm not a "music expert" by any means. Although I'm sure I've listened to almost as much music as anyone who might rightfully lay claim to the title. But just for the fun of it I'm going to try to figure out why this piece moved me so. (To actual lump-in-the-throat, hold-back-the-water-works emotion.)

Throughout the composition, Jerry Goldsmith tempers this larger-than-life bombast w/ contrasting gentle melodiousness. Back and forth that happens throughout the whole song.
BUT at 2:09 something feels different.
And by 2:39 he seems to be pulling it all in and closing it down.

Around then at 2:45 I don't know what it is that makes me well up. Has he switched instruments so that the melodious portion is played by the bombastic horns? Is there anyone who knows music who can explain it to me? (Not why I react to it, but what is musically that I'm reacting to?
WHen that tambourine or me or metronome or whatever it is that kicks in and drives the song forward at 2:45, I'm a mess 'til about 3:17 when Mr. G shuts it all down again.

Now as I said, I think this happens all the way through, but it's this one particular segment that takes me and shakes me.
