Dred Scott Trio

About

Description
DRED SCOTT TRIO shows regularly deliver a cheeky change of pace to the buttoned-up shush-y vibe of the usual jazz clubs. The music itself is heady, jazzy and deep enough to please the hardest-core jazz fan, yet remains remarkably accessible, a true "jam band" in the form of a classic jazz piano trio. Pianist/composer Dred Scott plays with a unique compelling voice and also delivers blistering high-larious verbal "dispatches" from the stage, making the audience part of the show and answering in the affirmative Frank Zappa's classic rhetorical question, "Does humor belong in music?". By 2 am every Tuesday, usually after a swinging treatment of Black Sabbath's "The Wizard" or Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper" or Gerry Mulligan's "Line For Lyons," someone's overheard gurgling, "I used to think jazz sucks, but this ROCKS!" Yes, that same someone invariably throws up, passes out, and gets tossed out, but the sentiment remains sincere.

Pianist / Composer DRED SCOTT has recorded seven self-produced cd's as a leader and his latest Live at the Rockwood Music Hall will be released early next year by Ropeadope Records. He has recorded with the likes of Don Byron, Anthony Braxton, John Adams, Cecil McBee, and Andrew Cyrille, and has performed with Levon Helm, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Bob Weir, Ricky Lee Jones, and more.

His trio, which includes his bassist of 12 years, BEN RUBIN (aka Benny Cha Cha) (Mudville, Marshall Crenshaw, Killah Priest, Karsh Kale) and drumming phenom TONY MASON (Joan Osborne, Leo Nocentelli, Bo Diddley, Charlie Hunter Trio), recently made their first appearance at the venerated Newport Jazz Festival and will also be appearing in the feature film Once More, With Feeling, starring Linda Fiorentino and Chazz Palmenteri.

Dred Scott tells us:

"Many thanks to the brian charette trio for covering for us last tuesday while we were out in the bay area. last tuesday afternoon i got a call from matt, the manager of the rockwood. he has a very low voice if you want a character voice to go with the dialogue.
'um. hi dred. are you in phoenix?'
'hey matt. um, no. why do you ask?'
'well we just got a very curious phone call from a guy who said he was you. he'd lost his luggage in phoenix and had no money and would someone from the rockwood please wire him $350 so he could get back in time to play tonite.'
'that's not only not me. i don't know anyone in phoenix. or arizona for that matter.'
'that's what i thought.'
'did you wire the money?'
'no, of course not. just thought you should know.'
'thanks. see you next week.'
'yep. bye.'

the next nite we played at yoshi's oakland to a decent size crowd that impressed the club enough to talk about having us back. that is if there is a back to go back to. seems they've been canceling many of the second sets - 10 people will show up and they give them back the money and send the staff home. sign o the times, i guess. jack london square had always seemed empty to me before. even after the attempted revitalization. but businesses are closing and there is almost zero foot traffic down there. the double wide expanse of embarcadero st. vacant of cars. it's kind of eerie. certainly a shock coming from nyc where human beings are always in sight.

the next nite we played in santa cruz at kuumbwa. we received a standing ovation. and not one of those one person stands up and then another and then some people stand up because they are stretching and then other people stand up because hell everyone else is type of standing ovations. no. we killed them. the response was instantaneous. we were one with the crowd. and it was thrilling.
the kind of experience that makes you decide against giving it all up for gardening."

here's what the santa cruz metro had to say about it:
"Dred Scott has a highly abusive relationship with his piano. One minute he’s in a furious rage, poking, jamming and slapping the keys around like a coked-up mobster. Then, after cooling down a bit, he’s apologizing with tender ticklings and delicate caresses, trying to convince each key that he’s sorry and he’ll change. But no matter how bad it gets, sooner or later they always come back to each other. Plus, one listen to the fusion of rock, funk and hip-hop-laced jazz that comes out of their union proves that dysfunctional relationships are often the most exciting."
