BRAINSTORM

The youthful exuberance that makes Dyme Def relevant is perfectly bottled in Brain. He never sleeps, eats takeout and writes his raps in phone texts. The girls all loved him even when he was making Dyme Def’s beats on a laptop with a cracked screen and white paint on the keyboard. His raps are written on greasy paper-bags from his chicken sandwich with cheese, or on the back of an old Seattle City Light bill in BeanOne’s studio. In February he flew to New York and rocked a Soho loft party, then re-routed to L.A. on Red Bull’s budget to record a self-produced track with Young Buck (formerly of G-Unit). Ohh to be 22 again…

S.E.V.

He is a direct descendant of the master craftsmen of rap. Skill pays his bills. This bad brothaaa is the kind of MC that is blogged about before he eats breakfast. He writes ballads in house slippers about honey drippers and its on thefader.com before the east coast hits happy hour. Between Brainstorm’s wild antics and Fearce’s stony cool, there is S.E.V. writing in the shadows of giants. When Bean bumps the bpm to 109, its S.E.V. that fast raps his way to a hipster high fashion following.

FEARCE VILLAN

Fearce is the old guard in Dyme Def. Where critics seek a weak link they find old reliable. His is the task of deep introspective verses and songs. But he will still snatch your girl when you are asleep on the job. Just see his performance of “Let it Be,” in front of a 100-foot LCD screen at Bumbershoot 2007 alternating between 1 and 2 – landing on the next numeral when the chorus goes “Three. Let it all go, and let it be.” It was Fearce that drew the crowd out the cubicles when Dyme Def kicked freestyles in the editor of the Source’s office in New York this year. Next thing you know they are Unsigned Hype for the April issue.

BeanOne

Seattle is a city of music icons. Behemoths in basements making songs fit for the world. Bean One found galaxies in his underground lair and engineered the blast off of Space Music Recording. Every song has eight remixes you’ll never hear. Every verse is scrutinized by all three rappers and rubberstamped by Bean. He isn’t pioneering the Seattle sound – he is composing the arrangement Quincy Jones would play for an alien visitor. He has 10-year old floppy disks that will win your favorite producers online beat battle. It may seem like excess, but that is the recipe – quality comes from picking a small batch from a big library.
