What is Dragonballz?

Dragon Ball Z (ドラゴンボールZ, Doragon Bōru Zetto?) is the award-winning anime adaptation of the second portion of the immensely popular Dragon Ball manga written and drawn by Akira Toriyama, making it the sequel to the Dragon Ball anime. It was first released in Japan and Hong Kong, and later elsewhere in the world including the United States. The 'Z' was originally added to the title by Toriyama for the anime, to signify it as being the ending portion of the Dragon Ball series.

The series follows the adventures of the adult version of Goku who, along with his companions, defend the Earth and many other planets against various villains. While the original Dragon Ball anime followed Goku through childhood into adulthood, Dragon Ball Z is a continuation of his adulthood life, but at the same time parallels the maturation of his son, Gohan and to a lesser extent, with his other son Goten. The separation between the series is also significant as the latter series takes on a more dramatic and serious tone

Appearance

Vegeta's build when he first appears in Dragon Ball Z is short and stocky, and he remains short for the course of the series, even though in the anime he becomes more slender and muscular as time goes on. He has black hair that stands firmly upwards, and he has a profound widow's peak. However, in the anime during his first appearance, his hair is clearly a dark auburn, but later changes to black and remains black for the rest of the series.

Vegeta's regular skin color is a medium shade of tan, or more caramel in color. As a full-blooded Saiyan, Vegeta once had a monkey-like tail that was usually seen wrapped around his waist like a belt. After his first battle with Goku and his friends, it was cut off by Yajirobe.

Vegeta usually is seen wearing white gloves, white light-weight boots and a skin tight dark blue bodysuit. Vegeta also wears battle armor until the end of the Cell saga, which changes to simply the blue suit in the Buu saga. In Dragon Ball GT, Vegeta's attire becomes more Earth oriented, changing to leather.

Personality

As the royal prince of the almost extinct Saiyan race, Vegeta is seen to be arrogant and sadistic, making his pride and power the most important things to him. Even though his strong sadistic nature relaxes when he marries and has children, his overwhelming pride never ceases even as he settles down into family life. Because of his evil intentions before he joined the Z Fighters, Vegeta is often viewed as the outsider of the Z team, making him one of the most distinguishable characters in the series. Many early examples of his unintentional heroism were due to arrogance, his love of fighting, or his desire to prove himself better than Goku. In order to do so, Vegeta would fight enemies that were considered rivals to Goku as well as him. This soon develops into him fighting in order to protect his family and his home from enemies. By the end of Dragon Ball Z, he views Goku more as a close friend rather than a serious rival.

Character History

Pre-Dragon Ball

Young Vegeta in the TV special, Bardock: The Father of Goku.

Vegeta is seen in his youth in the Burdock movie special. Vegeta easily destroyed 5-6 Saibamen in this movie, showing his immense ability at a young age, being the son of the Saiyan king who was also named Vegeta. Even though Vegeta was royalty, he and his father were under the rule of the planetary overlord, Freeza. However, Freeza, out of fear of an impending uprising, kills King Vegeta and destroys Planet Vegeta, along with all Saiyans except for 4 (three additional Saiyans, Tullece, Paragus, and Broly, are added from the movies), Goku, Goku's older brother Raditz, Nappa and Vegeta himself. Freeza kept Vegeta, Raditz and Nappa as mercenary, usually to destroy planets and instill fear, much as he had used the Saiyan race. Meanwhile, unknown to Freeza, Goku had been sent to Earth to wipe out the humans and prepare it for sale. Because Vegeta is the son of King Vegeta, he prides himself as being the "Prince of all Saiyans".

Dragon Ball Z

Saiyan Saga

Vegeta in the Saiyan Saga.

Vegeta in the Saiyan Saga.

Vegeta is introduced to Dragon Ball Z as a reluctant and deceitful mercenary for Freeza. However, his true intentions for coming to Earth are to make a wish with the dragon balls for immortality, so that he can eventually defeat Freeza and rule the Galaxy. When Vegeta and Nappa arrive on Earth, they are confronted by the Z Fighters. Vegeta lets Nappa fight alone, Nappa has no trouble disposing of most of them. Goku finally arrived and saved what remained of the Z Fighters, and easily defeating Nappa. Vegeta, out of anger, kills Nappa for losing to such a low class Saiyan. Vegeta then starts to fight Goku.

At first, Vegeta is easily able to overpower Goku. However, after a battle with Vegeta being overpowered by Goku's Kaioken x4, Vegeta turns into a Oozaru and totally crushes Goku. But after his tail was cut off by Yajirobe's katana, he got hit by a Genki Dama and was crushed by Gohan in his Oozaru form. Vegeta was severely wounded and tried to get to his space pod. The other fighters could not fight anymore except for Kuririn. He wanted to kill Vegeta with Yajirobe's katana, but Goku pleaded with Kuririn to spare Vegeta and Vegeta barely escapes with his life. Vegeta uses his space pod to take him to one of the planets controlled by Freeza to recover from his injuries. With his extreme arrogance, he cannot understand how he could have been defeated by such weak enemies.

Freeza Saga

After recovering from the wounds he received from the battle on earth Vegeta finds out that Freeza went to Planet Namek to look for the Namekian Dragon Balls. Vegeta makes his way to Planet Namek, now planning to make a wish with the Namekian Dragon Balls. When he arrives, Vegeta finds that Freeza has already been searching for the Dragon Balls. Vegeta kills Freeza's minions Kiwi, Dodoria, and Freeza's right hand soldier Zarbon. He also confronts Gohan and Kuririn, who had also come for the Dragon Balls so that their dead friends could be revived. The Dragonballs are soon stolen by Freeza's elite mercenaries, the Ginyu Force who fought Vegeta, Kuririn, and Gohan after they had teamed with the purpose of fighting them. Vegeta is able to kill Gurd but is then defeated by Recoome. During Gohan's fight with Recoome, Goku showed up to help after healing from his injuries from his fight with Vegeta. After Goku defeated Recoome, Vegeta comes to believe that Goku may have become the new Saiyan of Legend.

Vegeta fights Freeza.

After Goku had defeated both Recoome and Butta, Vegeta stomped and broke Butta's neck, then finished off Recoome with a Ki blast. Goku, upset by Vegeta's actions, says that Recoome and Butta deserved the mercy that Vegeta received. During the battle with Captain Ginyu, Vegeta shows the same attitude with Jheese that he did with Gurd, Butta, and Reacoom blowing him to bits. After the Ginyu Force defeat, Goku was left badly injured, but Vegeta decided to help him recover, so he could help with Freeza. Freeza showed up abruptly to stop Gohan and Kuririn from wishing on the Dragon Balls, something Vegeta had no idea about. Vegeta, Gohan, Kuririn, and the recently revived Piccolo begin a battle with Freeza. However Freeza was just toying with them. Freeza then decided to torture Vegeta to show him that he really wasn't the Super Saiyan as he had made himself believe.

Freeza completely dominated Vegeta, but Goku arrived just then to save him. With tears in his eyes he spent his last few moments of life telling Goku about what really happened to Planet Vegeta, which Freeza was responsible for. In his last moment Vegeta even mocking Freeza, for he believed that Goku could beat the alien tyrant. Freeza finished him off with a single energy beam from his finger. Vegeta was later revived by the Dragon Balls, and transported to Earth. He then left to train in hope of surpassing Goku who had reached Super Saiyan while fighting Freeza.

Cell Saga

After Freeza defeat, Vegeta scours the galaxy looking for Goku. Unable to locate Goku, Vegeta returns to Earth disappointed. After an offer from Bulma for a place to stay, he lives with the Briefs family at Capsule Corp. At this point, he is steadily seen in a pink collared shirt and pants. When sensing a huge ki heading towards Earth, Vegeta realizes that Goku did not kill Freeza. Freeza comes to Earth with his father, King Cold for revenge against Goku. A mysterious young Super Saiyan quickly disposes of Freeza and King Cold to Vegeta's disbelief. Goku arrives on Earth and the young man tells him that he is from the future, and that two diabolical androids will arrive in three years and kill all the Z Fighters. After a quick display of their Super Saiyan powers, Vegeta vows to become one himself, kill the androids and defeat Goku. During the three years, Vegeta and Bulma have child named Trunks. Vegeta becomes a Super Saiyan during the three years as well.

The Androids arrive three years later as has predicted. When Goku failed to defeat Android 19 because of a heart illness, Vegeta, doning a new Saiyan outfit, defeats Android 19 revealing his Super Saiyan power to the other Z-Fighters. During Piccolo's fights the Android 20 (actually Dr. Gero), the young Super Saiyan reappears. Hearing Piccolo call the boy "Trunks", Vegeta realizes that the young man was his own son, from the future. It is also revealed that the androids the Z-Fighters confronted were not the ones that Trunks knew. Gero escaped to his hideout and released the androids Trunks was familiar with (#17, and #18), who in turn kill Gero and release Android 16. During his battle with the newly awakened Android 18, Vegeta is badly beaten. After being outclassed, Vegeta vows to transcend the Super Saiyan. Goku, recovered from his illness, persuades Vegeta to enters the Room of Spirit and Time at Kami's Lookout and trains with Trunks for a lapsed time of one year. During that time, the bio-warrior android named Cell had started his search for Androids 17 and 18, in a goal to reach "perfection". He was successful in absorbing Android 17.

Vegeta and Trunks emerge from the Room of Spirit and Time, to confront Semi-Perfect Cell. After revealing his Ascended Super Saiyan form, Vegeta dominates Cell. Cell begs Vegeta to allow him to absorb Android 18, in order to become complete, and make the fight more interesting. Vegeta foolishly allows this. Cell absorbs 18, and Vegeta finds himself utterly outclassed yet again. Trunks comes to his father's aid showing he has surpasses his father's prided strength. It was revealed Trunks' power had limitations, sacrificing speed for power. Vegeta had seemingly understood this concept, where as Trunks had not. After the battle, Cell decided to hold a tournament dubbed the Cell Games. Vegeta in preperation for the tournament, reenters the Room of Spirit and Time a second time, however he was unable to advance his powers after another lapsed time of one year.

Vegeta is an observer during the beginning bouts of the Cell Games. Vegeta does not get the opportunity to fight in the actual tournament until Cell creates his Cell Juniors. Because of Gohan's foolish mistake in not destroying Cell, Goku sacrifice himself for the fate of Earth. After Goku's sacrifice and Cell resurrection, Cell kills Trunks. Vegeta, out of rage of seeing his son die, goes berserk and attacks Cell. This being the first time Vegeta shows affection for another person. Cell defeated Vegeta but later Vegeta distracts Cell long enough for Super Saiyan 2 Gohan to push all his energy into his Kamehameha destroying Cell. Now with Goku's death, Vegeta felt that he would never have another chance to defeat Goku. With Cell defeated and Shenlong reviving the people killed by Cell, Trunks decides to return to his time. Vegeta in his own way acknowledges Trunks, his son as a worthy Saiyan warrior before Trunks returns to his time.

Buu Saga

Seven years pass since the Cell Games, and the Tenka’ichi Budôkai is reinstated. Now that Goku is gone, Vegeta's main focus is to make his own son stronger than Goku's now two sons. Upon hearing from Goku during Gohan's visit to Capsule Corp that he will be visiting Earth for strict 24 hour period to fight in the tournament. Vegeta sees this as the perfect opportunity for a rematch with Goku.

During the tournament, the active Z-Fighters are alerted to the presence of a grand evil and head off to vanquish it, enraging Vegeta who is again denied his rematch. During their confrontation with Babidi and his Majin warriors, Vegeta's dark intentions are observed by Dabura, the strongest minion under Babidi's command who abandons his fight with Gohan to inform his master. Able to manipulate and enslave those with evil in their hearts, Babidi attempts to mystically convert Vegeta into a Majin warrior. Though he struggles, Vegeta is consumed and becomes Majin Vegeta. Desperate to fight Goku, they are returned, by Babidi's magic, to the tournament arena where Vegeta begins murdering spectators to force Goku into a no-holds barred battle. However, refusing to allow more innocents to fall, Goku requests Babidi to allow their battle to take place in a remote, abandoned area.

There Vegeta is ordered to kill the East Kaioshin by Babidi but Vegeta refuses to the astonishment of Babidi as it is something that should be impossible. Clinging to his pride after being enslaved, Vegeta states that his only goal is to finally defeat Goku and nothing else will be allowed to interrupt or postpone their battle. During their conflict, they release enough energy to awaken Majin Buu which distracts Goku, requesting Vegeta to end their fight to deal with the threat. Vegeta accepts the truce only to knock Goku unconscious and setting off to deal with Majin Buu alone, wanting to repay Goku for sacrificing himself against Cell many years ago. Unfortunately Vegeta, despite possessing overwhelming power, cannot compete with Buu's near invulnerability and is bested, forcing him to commit suicide as a last resort, detonating every ounce of power and in the process sacrificing his life, even though he knew from Piccolo that he would go to hell.

Vegeta, ready to fight Buu

Vegeta, ready to fight Buu

Eventually, Vegeta is restored to life when the battle against Buu becomes increasingly desperate. Vegeta unwillingly forces himself to fuse with Goku to become Vegetto, easily out-classing Buu until Vegetto is willingly absorbed to free his friends trapped within the mystical monster. Within the bowels of Buu, Vegetto is separated into Goku and Vegeta. They engage in battles with the internal defenses of Buu before escaping and being transported to the planet of the Kais. There, Vegeta and Goku battle against Buu until Vegeta composes a plan, struggling to hold off Buu long enough for Goku to form and use the Genki Dama. During this time Vegeta asks Dende on New Namek to wish everyone on Earth back to life to give energy to the Genki Dama. Dende asks Porunga to wish everyone that was non-evil back to life and to his and Goku's surprise, Vegeta is restored back to life. Buu is defeated and Vegeta finally settles his rivalry with Goku, becoming a true good guy and Goku's friend in the process. Many years later, the heroes reunite at another Tenka’ichi Budôkai tournament where Vegeta prepares once again to face Goku in battle. Goku leaves however to train a powerful new fighter, Uub as Vegeta and the Z-fighters watch on.

In the new kanzenban version of the final volume, Vegeta once again swears to himself that he will become stronger than Goku and fight him again.

Dragon Ball GT

Baby Saga

In this saga, Baby, an artificially-created Tsufurujin came to Earth. These people were the race that used to live on the Saiyan's homeworld before being wiped out by the stronger race. He possessed people, including Gohan and Goten, to find Vegeta. Vegeta fought both Goten and Gohan, and beat them, but Baby entered Vegeta's body through multiple cuts and proceeded to control him completely. Vegeta continues to be possesed by Baby for most of the saga until Baby willingly leaves Vegeta's body when he is defeated by Super Saiyan 4 Goku.

Super 17 Saga

After Goku gets trapped in Hell and is forced to fight Freeza and Cell, Vegeta claims that he is the Earth's protector in the case of Goku's absence and is determined to win the battle against Super 17 (the fusion of Android 17 from the Cell Saga and a newer version of 17, a Machine Mutant created in Hell). He powers up to Super Saiyan 2 and uses his new attack, the Final Shine Attack, however this proves futile, as Super 17 simply absorbs the attack. But then Goku comes back and with some help from #18 he destroys him with his Super Dragon Fist attack.

Shadow Dragon Saga

As Goku continues to have trouble against the One Star Dragon, Yi Xing Long, Vegeta comes to his aid. Transforming into a Golden Oozaru, due to the Blutz Wave Generator (a device invented by Bulma), Vegeta proceeded to become a Super Saiyan 4 as he had full control over the Oozaru form. When even this form failed to stop the Shadow Dragon, Goku and Vegeta fused to become Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta. Gogeta overwhelmed Yi Xing Long in power almost bringing the heroes to victory, but the fusion time ran out before they could deliver the final blow. The two separate and are beaten until Goku uses a Genki Dama to take out the creature. Eventually, thanks to the people of the Earth and of the entire universe, Goku gains a big enough Genki Dama to destroy Yi Xing Long. Before leaving forever, Goku tells Vegeta that the lives of everyone are now in his hands, passing the role of protector of the Earth and anyone in need of help to Vegeta.

As Goku continues to have trouble against the One Star Dragon, Syn Shenron, Vegeta comes to his aid. Gogeta overwhelmed Omega in power almost bringing the heroes to victory, but the fusion time ran out before they could deliver the final blow. The two separate and are beaten until Goku uses a Genki Dama to take out the creature. Eventually, thanks to the people of the Earth and of the entire universe, Goku gains a big enough Genki Dama to destroy Omega Shenron. Before leaving forever, Goku tells Vegeta that the lives of everyone are now in his hands, passing the role of protector of the Earth and anyone in need of help to Vegeta.

Forms and transformations

Oozaru

Oozaru Vegeta

Oozaru Vegeta

This is Vegeta's least used transformation that occurs when he is exposed to rays of moon light, real or artificial while he possesses his tail. When these conditions are met Vegeta transforms into a giant ape, vastly increasing his size and strength. Vegeta is shown to have full control of himself in this form unlike most Saiyans who would randomly rampage about with no control of their actions. Saiyans are 10 times stronger than their normal form while in Oozaru form.

Super Saiyan

Vegeta first achieved this while training during the three year time period waiting for the arrival of the androids. However, Vegeta is first seen to have this ability in his battle with Android #19. This transformation results in Vegeta's physical limits being increased by a great amount, enhancing his speed, strength, reflexes and destructive potential. His hair turns gold and is forced upward, with sharper edges, whilst his irises turn green, his body becoming surrounded in a glowing, golden aura. Additionally, his muscle mass also increases slightly. Vegeta dubbed himself "Super Vegeta" when in this and subsequent forms, first when he killed Android 19.

Super Saiyan 2nd Grade

By forcing his power as a Super Saiyan to the absolute limit, Vegeta was able to transform to an advanced form of Super Saiyan. In appearance, Vegeta resembles his Super Saiyan form but his hair has gotten longer and more defined. His muscle mass has also greatly increased, but not to a point that inhibits his speed. Even though this is never specifically stated, Trunks says later that Vegeta was possibly able to transform into a Super Saiyan 3rd Grade, but chose not to because he knew of the negative side effects of lost speed.

Majin Vegeta

Majin Vegeta

Majin Vegeta

Vegeta by the Buu saga had become for the most part good, but hidden desires and evil still lurked in his soul. Seeing this and using it to his advantage, the dark wizard Babidi used his magic to possess Vegeta and fully reveal the full extent of his power that had been suppressed for years by his good nature. Vegeta had become the purely evil Majin Vegeta, whom Babidi had also attempted to control, but Vegeta's overwhelming pride made that difficult for him. Vegeta now had full access to every depth of his previously sublimated power, increasing his strength tremendously. It is later discovered that Vegeta could have resisted Babidi's attempt to possess him, but chose not to after seeing the incredible effect on power that Babidi's possession had on the Human Spopovitch. Vegeta was desperate for a rematch with Goku, and with Goku's limited time back on Earth, and the knowledge that he could not beat Goku with his current state of power, Vegeta decided that becoming a Majin was the only alternative.

Majin Vegeta's appearance differs in subtle ways from his regular Super Saiyan form. The only visible differences are that the outlines of his eyes become much darker to highlight the black colouring, protruding veins on various areas of his body and the "M" symbol in the center of his forehead (the mark of the Majin) indicating his enslavement to Babidi. Vegeta has full access to Super Saiyan 2 in this state.

Super Saiyan 2

It is actually uncertain when Vegeta becomes Super Saiyan 2, but it is first revealed when Vegeta becomes Majin Vegeta. He later uses this form to fight Kid Buu while buying Goku time to prepare the Super Genki Dama. This transformation again increased Vegeta's physical limits, enhancing his abilities beyond the capabilities of his Super Saiyan 1 form. His appearance is similar to that of the Super Saiyan state but his hair strands are clearly and individually defined while his body sparks with bolts of electricity.

Baby Vegeta

Baby Vegeta in his final form

Baby Vegeta in his final form

Like his Majin state, this is a form outside of normal Saiyan transformations, thrust upon Vegeta when he was attacked and possessed by the parasite Baby, chosen as the strongest being on Earth. During his possession, his form gradually alters over time as his body is augmented to suit Baby's desires. Originally, Baby Vegeta appears to be in the Super Saiyan state permanently with his hair slowly turning gray and his eyes turning red, his eyebrows receding. His skin turned a grayish hue and he gained a black suit with golden shoulder pads.

Golden Oozaru

Vegeta first attained this form while not under control of his own body. The entity known as Baby had infested his body and taken control of Vegeta. Due to Baby-possessed Bulma's application of wave surges called "Blutz Waves" ("Bruits Waves" in the original version), Baby was transformed into a Golden Oozaru in order to compete with Super Saiyan 4 Goku. Baby Vegeta was returned to normal after his tail was severed.

Super Saiyan 4

Vegeta in his Super Saiyan 4 form

Vegeta in his Super Saiyan 4 form

Using artificial means to transform into a Golden Oozaru, Vegeta then forced himself to overcome the fierce primal rage of the form, and in doing so, ascended to Super Saiyan 4. The physique of the form differs drastically when compared to any of Vegeta's prior Super Saiyan forms. He appears in his normal state, but his body is coated in a crimson fur apart from his chest and hands. His irises in his eyes turn turquoise and he gains pupils; also his upper and lower eyelids turn red. Vegeta's tail also returns, crimson in color as well. Vegeta only used this form in Dragon Ball GT, utilizing it to help Goku against Omega Shenron.

Techniques and special abilities

Atomic Blast

A devastating special attack Majin Vegeta uses on Majin Buu. He extends his right arm towards his opponent. He then carefully targets which part of the enemy his wishes to fire the blast by extending out his index finger and middle, while carefully limiting the space of his thumb.

Big Bang Attack

When using this technique, Vegeta extends one arm and opens his palm, turning his hand up at a 90-degree angle (as if to signal "stop") and gathers his Ki. He then fires a sphere of Ki that is yellow in color and creates an enormous explosion upon contact. He first uses this attack in order to destroy Android 19 during the Cell saga.

Bukujutsu

The power of flight. It literally means "lighter than air skill" or "Air Dance". Most warriors in the Dragon Ball universe can perform this.

Energy Rings

Vegeta creates five energy rings which he then uses to pin his opponent by binding their limbs and neck. He used this ability in his fight with Goku during the Buu Saga. This attack does not appear in the manga.

Saishyuu Saigo no Waza

Translates to "Ultimate Final Skill", Majin Vegeta uses this attack against Majin Buu. He engulfs himself in fiery energy and charges his Ki and then releases a burst of energy in the form of a sphere that continuously expands until Vegeta is out of energy. It was also called Suicide in the video game "Dragon Ball Z: Legendary Super Warriors" and called Final Explosion in the Budokai and Budokai Tenkaichi series'. This technique is Vegeta's most powerful one, since it uses up every ounce of Vegeta's energy. As a result his body becomes completely lifeless, turning into stone and eventually crumbling to dust.

Final Flash

An energy attack used by Vegeta. He performs it by extending his arms outwards from the sides of his body, then placing the base of his hands together directly forward and releasing a large and powerful gold Ki beam that consumes everything in its path. It requires some time to "power up". It was first used against Cell during the Cell Saga, and once more against Goku during the Buu Saga, when Vegeta was under the Majin enchantment.

Final Shine

Seen only in Dragon Ball GT, this is a powerful and quickly charged beam of green energy that Vegeta launched at Super 17. Additionally, Vegeta uses this attack again against Yi Xing Long, but it has no effect. This time he shot it like a Final Flash.

Gyarikku Hou

Gyarikku Hou

Gyarikku Hou (Galick Gun)

A beam similar to the Kamehameha. Vegeta charges the attack similarly to the Kamehameha, but Vegeta releases it with both hands faced open (while the Kamehameha requires the fingers to be curled). The result is a concentrated, fuchsia-colored energy beam from his hands and body. Vegeta uses this against Goku in their first fight during the Saiyan Saga. Translated as Garlic Gun or Galick Gun. In keeping with the Saiyan pun on vegetables, it is named after the vegetable "garlic" (note that "ga-rikku" is the Japanese way of saying garlic).

Kienzan

A razor sharp disk of energy that can slice through nearly any opponent. It was used by Vegeta only once to cut off Gohan's tail after a transformation into an Oozaru durring the Saiyan saga. It is similar to the "true" Kienzan used by Kuririn, which is a flat disc of Ki energy with a rotating edge around its perimeter. This attack is called Destructo Disc in the English version of the series.

Son Goku (孫 悟空, Son Gokū?) is the fictional main character and superhero of the Dragon Ball series (created by the mangaka Akira Toriyama), including the manga Dragon Ball, and the three anime series, Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT. The character is based upon the monkey protagonist, Sun Wukong, from the Chinese novel Journey to the West. Goku is known for his cheerful, energetic personality, fondness for competition (specifically fighting) and eating, as well as his kind and loving heart and his naivety to the world. He has remarkable intuition at seeing the good in others despite their actions. He eventually earns the respect of most of his enemies. Appearance Goku has spiky black hair and dark eyes. His physique almost perfectly replicates his father Bardock. His most common outfit is a red-orange martial arts uniform with a dark blue undershirt, wristbands, belt, and boots. The front and back of this outfit at first displays the symbols of his training masters (Muten-Roshi, North Kaio) and he then uses his own symbol through the Freeza Saga. Heritage Kakarotto/Kakarrot is Goku's name that he was given by his Saiyan family when he was born on Planet Vegeta. At first Goku rejects his heritage, but accepts it during his battle with Freeza. Only Saiyans refer to Goku by his Saiyan name and Vegeta refuses to refer to him as anything else, believing he should be proud of his Saiyan heritage. Goku's original name fits in with the rest of his family; all the known members in his family are puns of vegetables that are related to each other. Goku's Saiyan name "Kakarrot" is a pun on "carrot." Goku's brother Raditz is a pun of the word radish while his father Burdock's name is a pun of the herb called burdock. Pre-Dragon Ball Baby Goku It is not revealed to the audience that Goku is a ruthless Saiyan warrior until the beginning of Dragon Ball Z. Kakarrot was sent to Earth to exterminate the Humans and make the planet suitable for conquest. Kakarrot is instead found by an old man that he call Grandpa Gohan who lives as a hermit on Mount Paozu, hundreds of miles away from the nearest city. Gohan, unaware of the boy's true Saiyan name, names him Goku. Goku was wild and unusually savage for a child, but one day during Gohan's travels, Goku falls out of his carrier and into a ravine where he suffers severe head trauma. The head trauma had scrambled his "programmed" Saiyan nature and Goku became an innocently naїve child, completely uninfluenced by desire and the evils of the world, and also completely unaware of his original mission of destruction. Some time after that Goku transforms into an Oozaru one night and kills his adoptive grandfather. Goku was then left to fend for himself in the wilderness until he is twelve years old. Dragon Ball In the original series, Goku is first introduced to the audience at the age of 12. He is seemingly normal except for his naivety of the world, his great strength, and his tail. Goku also possesses a magical fighting stick called the Nyoi-bo and the four-star Dragon Ball. Goku meets Bulma and together start the search for the Dragon Balls. During their quest Goku confronts the desert bandit Yamcha,[1] who later becomes his friend. Goku also meets his future wife Chi-Chi and the legendary martial artist Muten-Rôshi, from whom he receives his flying cloud called the Kintoun and later learns the Kamehameha. After the quest is finished, Goku begins to train with Muten-Rôshi and develops into one of the most powerful fighters on Earth. His fellow student Kuririn is a rival at first, but soon becomes Goku's best friend. After Goku competes in, but loses, the 21st Martial Arts Tournament Tenka’ichi Budôkai, he leaves his friends behind once more and searches for the four-star Dragon Ball, which he believes contains the soul of his departed grandfather. Along the way he confronts the ruthless Red Ribbon Army. After defeating several top agents, Goku battles the deadly assassin, Tao Pai Pai. Goku is defeated at first but after receiving training from Master Karin, Goku defeats Tao Pai Pai and the whole Red Ribbon Army. Goku is sent by Muten-Roshi to train by himself around the world without kintoun, running, swimming and perfecting his abilities. They agree to meet again in the next tournament. Goku's next major opponent was Tenshinhan, a warrior trained by Muten-Rôshi’s rival, Tsuru-Sen'nin. Goku and Tenshinhan face off in the finals of the 22nd Martial Arts Tournament. Both fought valiantly, but Goku was unfortunately defeated by chance. However, as it was with Yamcha, Goku and Tenshinhan don't remain rivals for long and soon become close friends. Immediately after the 22nd Martial Arts Tournament, Piccolo Daimao appears, and after killing Kuririn, sets out to assassinate all martial artists on Earth to ensure his unchallenged rule. After a difficult series of battles, Goku eventually manages to defeat the demon and avenges Muten-Rôshi's and Kuririn's deaths. Moments before Piccolo's death however, he vows revenge and reincarnates himself in the form of an egg, which hatches into Piccolo Jr. After the battle, Goku accepts the gruelling training of Kami, the god of Earth for three years.Goku arrives to participate in the 23rd Martial Arts Tournament, as does Piccolo Jr. in order to fight Goku and to avenge his predecessor's death. In the final match, both Goku and Piccolo fight ferociously, until Goku is severely injured. However, Goku prevails and defeats Piccolo, making him the champion of the 23rd Tenka’ichi Budôkai, and Goku finally claims the title of the "strongest under the heavens". Dragon Ball Z Saiyan Saga Adult Goku in Dragon Ball Z At the start of the Dragon Ball Z series, Goku has built a family with his wife Chi-Chi, and their son, Son Gohan. A new super powerful threat arrives on Earth by the name of Raditz, who introduces himself as Goku's older brother. Raditz reveals to Goku that he is actually a Saiyan who was originally sent to Earth to conquer it. After realizing that Goku had forgotten his Saiyan roots, Raditz defeats Goku and kidnaps Gohan, telling Goku that he must kill at least 100 humans if he wishes to see his son alive again. Piccolo then appears and offers to join forces in order to defeat Raditz. With the two of them greatly outclassed, Goku sacrifices himself, holding Raditz in place while Piccolo charges his Makankosappo. Both are killed by Piccolo's attack. Before dying, Goku learns that two more elite Saiyan Warriors, both more powerful than Raditz, would be coming to Earth in one year. Once in the afterlife, Goku travels along Serpent Road to receive training from North Kaiō so he can gain the strength to battle the Saiyans. Goku arrives at his destination, where North Kaiō teach Goku the Kaiō-Ken and the Genki-Dama on a planet with ten times the gravity of Earth. Before the battle begins, Goku is wished back to life and begins the journey back along Serpent Road so that he can return to Earth. Goku arrives late at the battle site, finding out that Yamcha, Tenshinhan, Chaozu, and Piccolo are already dead, but he defeats Nappa with ease before confronting Vegeta. With the help of the Kaio-Ken and the Genki-Dama, as well as the assistance of Gohan, Kuririn, and Yajirobe Vegeta is defeated. Kuririn then attempts to kill Vegeta, but Goku persuads him to let Vegeta go, something Vegeta promised to make Goku regret. Freeza Saga Main article: Freeza Saga After recovering from his battle with Vegeta, Goku travels to Planet Namek to aid Gohan, Kuririn and Bulma who are in search of the Namekian Dragon Balls. Goku arrives in time to save his friends and Vegeta from the Ginyu Force. Displaying the power he achieved through training under hundred times gravity of the Earth, Goku easily defeats the Ginyu Force members Recoome and Butta, and then faces the leader Captain Ginyu. The injuries Goku's body receives at the end incapacitate him, forcing Vegeta to place him within a rejuvenation chamber so that he may aid them in a final confrontation with Freeza. Super Saiyan GokuHealed, Goku interrupts the ongoing battle before Freeza can kill Vegeta. Vegeta, in his dying words, pleads for Goku to kill Freeza to avenge the Saiyan race. Displaying impressive new strength, Goku manages to hold his own for a while, but Freeza eventually powers up to half of his full power and overwhelms him, forcing Goku to use the Genki-Dama. Freeza survives however, injuring Piccolo and murdering Kuririn which enrages Goku. Unleashing all of his power, Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan. Now more powerful than Freeza, the battle rages on until Freeza decides to obliterate the entire planet and he later powers up to his full power. As the planet dies around them, Goku and Freeza continue to fight until Freeza is cut in half by his own attack. Goku grudgingly spares Freeza some of his own energy to survive but the villain turns it against his benefactor, forcing Goku to destroy Freeza. Namek explodes, seemingly taking Goku's life in the process. However, when his friends attempt to revive him with the Namekian Dragon Balls, the dragon reveals that Goku is still alive. Android Saga Main article: Cell Saga Goku returns to Earth, only to be confronted by a teenage Super Saiyan named Trunks, who is from a future timeline. Trunks reveals that two androids (Jinzō'ningen) kill all the Z warriors and are destroying his world. Trunks provides Goku with an antidote for a heart disease which claimed his life in Trunks' future timeline before the arrival of the androids and ask the Z warriors to prepare for this new threat. Goku spends the next 3 years training with Piccolo and Gohan, not showing any signs of illness. When the Jinzō'ningen appear, Goku battles Android #19. During the fight Goku becomes gradually weaker, having contracted the heart virus later than predicted, Goku falls to #19 but is saved by Vegeta before being taken to Kame House where the vaccine is administered. After recovering from the illness, Goku had sensed what happened around him, knowing that #17, #18 and #16 have been activated, this knowledge caused Goku to train further in the Room of Spirit and Time with Gohan. During their training, a new threat emerges, Cell. After obtaining his perfect form, Cell is determined to face Goku hosting a fighting tournament, that he called "the Cell Games". The day of the tournament arrives and Goku faces Cell in battle using all his energy, only to eventually forfeit when he is worn out in order to allow Gohan to fight. Cell's torment of Gohan's friends and family forces him to transform into a Super Saiyan 2 where he easily dominates Cell. Desperate, Cell begins to self-destruct, forcing Goku to sacrifice himself and teleport together with Cell to North Kaio's planet where the explosion kills Goku. Cell regenerates from a single cell and returns to Earth more powerful than before facing Gohan again. Gohan struggles to overcome Cell's massive Kamehameha until Goku spiritually gives his son support from otherworld, allowing him to kill Cell. After the battle, the Z Warriors try to bring Goku back to life with the Dragon Balls, but Goku chooses to remain in the afterlife, believing himself to be the cause of many of the threats to Earth and his loved ones. He is granted the honour to keep his body, allowing him to continue training. Buu Saga Main article: Buu Saga On the day of the revival of the Tenka'ichi Budôkai, Goku is given special permission to return to Earth for one day to participate, allowing him to again see his loved ones and his newest son, Goten. During the tournament, Goku is informed by Kaiōshin of the imminent threat posed by the evil wizard Babidi and so leaves to face the new danger. Arriving at Babidi's ship, Goku and his allies are forced to face Babidi's henchmen, unwittingly providing power to the slumbering Majin Buu. Babidi possesses Vegeta who forces Goku to finally have a rematch bout until Buu is released from his rest due to the massive amount of energy being output from the fight. Before they can face Buu, Vegeta feigns a forfeit and knocks Goku unconscious. Upon awakening, Goku assesses the dire situation and decides to train Goten and Trunks in the art of Fusion before his time on Earth runs out. Super Saiyan 3 Goku Goku faces Buu in battle, unveiling his Super Saiyan 3 form and overwhelming the nearly invincible Buu. The transformation consumes the majority of his remaining energy however and Goku is forced to return to the afterlife earlier than anticipated. Learning that Gohan is alive and training with Kaiōshin, Goku teleports to the Kai Planet, observing the battle on Earth through a crystal ball. When Gohan's training is complete, he returns to Earth to face Buu but faces defeat after Buu's absorption of Gotenks and Piccolo. Rou Dai Kaiōshin transfers his life force to Goku to resurrect him and allow him to aid Gohan in battle, armed with the Potara fusion earrings. Before he can fuse with his son, Gohan is also absorbed leaving Goku desperate until Vegeta is allowed back to earth. The pair fuse to create the super warrior, Vegetto. Vegetto easily overpowers Buu before being purposefully absorbed by Buu to rescue his friends. The mystic nature of Buu's insides forces Vegetto's fusion to become unstable and the two separate back into Vegeta and Goku. They are confronted inside Buu's mind by an incarnation of Buu until Vegeta releases the absorbed Good Buu forcing an uncontrollable transformation, creating Kid Buu(Buu´s original form). Goku and Vegeta escape from Buu's body but Kid Buu, no longer having any goodness in him, quickly destroy Earth. Goku, Vegeta, Dende and Mr. Satan are rescued by Kaioshin and teleported to the Planet of the Kais. Buu eventually traces them and again battles the two Saiyans. After Goku is worn out, Vegeta ask Dende to use the Namekian Dragon Balls to restore Earth and all of its inhabitants, to use their power to create a Super Genki-Dama for Goku. With persuasion from Mr Satan, the Genki-Dama is supplied with a vast amount of energy which Goku then throws toward Kid Buu. Kid Buu amazingly blocks the attack until the final wish is used to restore Goku's full power, allowing him transform into his base Super Saiyan form and force the Genki-Dama forward, disintegrating Kid Buu, settling his rivalry with Vegeta and restoring peace to the Universe. Dragon Ball Z Movies Goku appears in every single Dragon Ball Z movie. Dragon Ball GT Baby Saga Super Saiyan 4 Goku in Dragon Ball GT Years later, an accidental wish by Emperor Pilaf upon the Black Star Dragon Balls reverts Goku back into his childhood physical form. Goku is then tasked with returning all 7 Black Star Dragon Balls back to Earth after they separate across the galaxy to prevent the destruction of Earth. During his journey, Goku encounters Baby, a creation of the race that lived on Planet Vegeta before the Saiyans arrived. Upon their return to Earth, Goku and his friends encounter Baby again who has possessed Vegeta and enslaved all life on Earth. Against Baby Vegeta, Goku's child-like state is easily beaten and he is almost killed, being saved by Kibitoshin in his final moments. Believing Goku to be dead, Baby uses the Black Star Dragon Balls to wish Planet Plant back into existence in orbit around Earth and begins transporting all enslaved, Earth life there to become the new Tsufurujin race. Meanwhile on Planet Kaioshin, Rou Dai Kaioshin plan to re-growing his Saiyan tail to upgrade Goku's power. Confident, Goku travels to Planet Plant and confronts Baby only to be beaten again. Defeated, Goku stares up at Earth, its reflected moon-light causing him to transform into a raging Golden Oozaru before Pan calms him down, allowing him to ascend into a Super Saiyan 4. Goku defeats Baby Vegeta, forcing Baby to flee Vegeta's body before Goku blasts him into the sun. Super 17 Saga Main article: Super 17 Saga A badly beaten Trunks arrives at Goku's door revealing his attacker to be Android #17. Goku follows the orders given to Trunks and leaves for Hell, through a black-hole in the sky, where he meets Dr. Myu, and Dr. Gero, who leave and seal the exit behind them, trapping Goku in the afterlife. To worsen matters, Cell and Freeza both appear. After a short fight, Cell and Freeza manage to drag Goku into the deepest part of Hell, where an old lady traps him within a block of ice. Being alive allows Goku to escape and incapacitate Freeza and Cell. Goku, still trapped in Hell, asks Enma Daiō for help, to which Enma responds that his powers are being blocked and he cannot release Goku. Piccolo and Dende then create another portal between the living world and Hell to allow Goku's escape. Goku battles the newly fused Super 17, with the help of Android #18. Goku defeats Super 17, piercing his stomach with a Ryū Ken before finishing him with a Kamehameha. Shadow Dragon Saga Main article: Shadow Dragon Saga Goku and his companions wanted to restore the planet´s damage with the seven Dragon Balls, but instead of Shenlong, seven evil Dragons have emerged from the Dragon Balls negative energy. Goku, follow by Pan, confront and defeat six dragons, but the most powerful enemy of all, One Star Dragon, Yi Xing Long, absorbs the other Dragon Balls into himself, forming Super Yi Xing Long. Gohan, Goten, Trunks and Ubb try to fight but are easily defeated. Vegeta arrives along with Bulma and uses a Bruitz Waves Generator to turn into a Golden Oozaru and transforms into a Super Saiyan 4. Desperate to end the Dragon's wrath, Vegeta suggests the fusion dance with Goku to make Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta. Gogeta nearly defeats Yi Xing Long, but his fusion time ends before the battle can be finished. The evil Dragon beats all the warriors to death, throwing his powerful negative energy to Goku. Mortally wounded, Goku starts gathering all the energy of the universe into a Genkidama, and annihilating Yi Xing Long with it, returning the Dragon Balls to how they once were and purging them of evil. Later, the real Shenlong appears and heal Goku and his friends, telling them that no more wishes shall be granted. Goku however, in exchange for one last wish, agrees to give up his place on Earth and accompany the Dragon back to the realm from which it came. The seven Dragon Balls are absorbed into Goku's body, and the dragon and Goku vanish. Goku returns to Earth 100 years later to observe his great-great grandson named Goku Jr, fight Vegeta's great-great grandson Vegeta Jr. Seeing peace restored, Goku flies off on the Kintoun, forever ending the Dragon Ball series. Forms and transformations Goku in all of his forms throughout Dragon Ball ZAs a member of the Saiyan race, Goku has acquired through training, the ability to transform. By transforming his body, Goku greatly enhances his abilities from the previous state. Goku is the only Saiyan in the entire Dragon Ball series who achieves all known Saiyan transformations. These forms are listed in the order they were attained: Oozaru Main article: Oozaru This form was a powerful but uncontrollable state common to all Saiyans where the user transforms into a large, ape-like creature increasing strength speed durability and spirit energy(ki) 10 fold, commonly referred to as a Great Ape. As a child, Goku was able to use this form, growing to a size that rivaled small buildings. In this form, Goku became an incredible force to be reckoned with but has no control over his actions at all, his mind overcome with a primal rage. This form was never used again by Goku after Dragon Ball due to his tail being removed permanently by Kami but does make a brief appearance in Dragon Ball GT. Super Saiyan Main article: Super Saiyan Goku was the first Saiyan in the series to achieve this transformation in over 1000 years making him the legendary Super Saiyan. After Freeza murdered Kuririn, seriously injured Piccolo, and threatened the life of his son, Gohan, Goku was overcome with rage and the motivation to stop Freeza once and for all, transforming into a Super Saiyan. This transformation enabled him to increase strength speed durability and spirit energy to a power that was fifty times his base power. Ascended Super Saiyan/Super Saiyan 2nd Grade Goku achieved this form after training in the Room of Spirit and Time upon Kami's Tower by continuously increasing his power, forcing his body to grow to contain the energy. Though it granted him a huge power increase and he still retained his speed unlike the Ultra Super Saiyan form, he decided never using it in battle, instead preferring to perfect his regular Super Saiyan transformation. Ultra Super Saiyan/Super Saiyan 3rd Grade Other than displaying it to Gohan during training, Goku never actually used this form as he noticed the defects of the increased muscle mass. He discovered the weakness and chose not to continue the training Trunks and Vegeta did (however Vegeta was aware of the weakness as stated by Cell). He instead directed his methods on searching for a more effective form, thus reaching Full Powered Super Saiyan. Super Saiyan, Full-Power Goku learned to perfect the Super Saiyan form, and first used it in battle against Cell. He discovered this mastery of the Super Saiyan while training with Gohan in the Room of Spirit and Time. In this form a saiyan does not feel the physical strain that comes with being a super saiyan and thus can keep this form for a much longer time. Super Saiyan 2 Goku first revealed this ability during his battle against Majin Vegeta in the Buu Saga. Though it is never seen where Goku learns this form, it can be assumed he unlocked this transformation while in the afterlife. The form granted Goku great enhancements in strength, speed, durability and spirit energy from Super Saiyan, though his appearance changed very little from the regular Super Saiyan. Super Saiyan 3 This was the final transformation Goku achieved in Dragon Ball Z. Goku was the only character to ever use the form without having fused with another character first. He displayed this form first during the Buu Saga against Majin Buu and admits that he achieved it while training in the afterlife. The form was the strongest transformation available in the DBZ universe but consumed large amounts of Goku's energy, reducing his time on the Earth substantially. Again, the form augmented Goku's Super Saiyan 2 strength speed durability and spirit energy. In the manga, Goku says that in the Other World he could reach the full potential of Super Saiyan 3, but on Earth he lost energy and reverted back to his original form before he could defeat Buu. The full potential of Super Saiyan 3 is obviously very great because Vegeta noted that if he were to build his chi, or ki,(spirit energy) he would be able to obliterate Buu. Golden Oozaru Goku achieved this transformation in Dragon Ball GT after being transformed into a child and having his Saiyan tail restored. This state allowed him to transform into a rampaging, mindless, Super Saiyan Oozaru with golden fur instead of brown/black. This form allows him to contain greater levels of power than ever before. The raw, animal rage combined with the increase in raw strength made him a terrible force of destruction. When his granddaughter, Pan, managed to calm the raging Goku, the Oozaru power was condensed and focused allowing him to transform into a Super Saiyan 4. Super Saiyan 4 Goku achieved this form during his battle with Baby-Vegeta in Dragon Ball GT. After being calmed down in the Golden Oozaru state, his mind was allowed to focus, and he was able to control his power and transform into a Super Saiyan 4, shrinking from the Oozaru form down to his regular adult size. Fusions Vegetto The Potara Saiyan Fusion between Goku and Vegeta, Vegetto, is considered to be the most powerful being in Dragon Ball Z. He was created as a desperate plan by Rou Dai Kaiōshin, to stop the powerful Majin Buu. Goku's relaxation and Vegeta's strategic mind enabled Vegetto to be quite an intelligent character without being overcome by arrogance but still possessing the ruthlessness to kill Buu. During their fight Vegetto outclassed Buu in every way, usually toying with him and tormenting him. Although the fusion was thought to be permanent, Vegetto ends up separating back into Goku and Vegeta once inside Buu's stomach. Gogeta The result of a Fusion Dance performed by Goku and Vegeta. Unlike with Potara Fusion, the Fusion Dance creates a perfect fusion of minds and personalities between the participants creating a totally new individual with a unique personality. Gogeta is capable of using Super Saiyan forms including Super Saiyan 4. Unfortunately, at Super Saiyan 4, Gogeta's power is so great that the normal 30-minute duration of the Fusion Dance is cut to 15 minutes. Spoilers end here. Techniques and special abilities Bukujutsu (Flight) This is the ability to fly using one's ki. Goku simply controls his energy and pushes out from underneath him allowing him to fly. Genki-Dama (Spirit Bomb) Perhaps Goku's most powerful attack, the Genki Dama draws energy from all life and places it in a deadly ki ball. Goku uses this against many of his more powerful opponents. The downside is that he is quite vulnerable during its lengthy creation time. He can only perform this technique out of Super Saiyan. When he attempted to use it against Android 13, as a Super Saiyan, he absorbed its energy instead of throwing it, though it still fueled him to victory. Jan-Ken (Rock-Scissors-Paper) This is Goku's special attack in early Dragon Ball, but is soon replaced by the Kamehameha. The user shouts "Jan Ken", then a name corresponding to the attack. "Jan Ken Gu", equals rock and will be a strong punch. "Jan Ken Chyoki", equals scissors and will be a poke in the eyes. "Jan Ken Pa", equals paper and will be an open palm strike. Kaiō-Ken (Fist of the Worlds) The Kaioken is one of Goku's most famous attacks in the Dragon Ball series. The Kaioken is a sudden eruption of ki, doubling Goku's physical abilities and strengh. Through training, Goku was able to increase the multiplier that the Kaiōken had on his power. Even though this attack gives Goku a sudden explosion of energy, the effect of it is extremely dangerous. If Goku multiplies the attack too much for his body to handle, he could kill himself by vaporizing his body. Kamehameha (Turtle Destruction Wave) Goku using the Kamehameha WaveGoku's signature attack and the trademark technique of the series, the Kamehameha is a powerful, constant stream of energy hurled at an opponent usually through the hands. Goku learned to use this technique by mimicing Muten Roshi, who used it to put the flames out on Fry-Pan Mountain during the original Dragon Ball series but Goku's was not as powerful as Muten Roshi's. Goku later developed several and more powerful variations of this attack during the course of the Dragon Ball series. Ryū-Ken (Dragon Fist) Ryū-Ken is the first and only technique that Goku created himself. He charges his energy into his fist and it creates a Shenlong-like dragon that he drives through the opponent he is facing. An exception to this was an Oozaru, instead of a dragon. This happened during Dragon Ball, when Goku defeated Piccolo Daimaō. Shunkan Idô (Instant Transmission) An ability Goku learned on his way back to Earth from Namek on a remote planet called Yardrat. It allows him to teleport nearly anywhere instantly so long as he focuses on a specific ki signal at the desired location or can see where he wants to go. He places two fingers on his forehead to focus on a power signal. Taiyōken (Solar Flare) Also known as the Fist of the Sun. A technique learned from Tenshinhan that uses energy to reflect the full light of the sun at an opponent within close proximity, temporarily blinding them. Zanzôken (After-Image) Also known as the Nin-ju-Zanzôken or Double Shadow Attack, this is when the user of this technique is able to move extremely fast over very short distances (usually a maximum of a few meters), leaving two rather misleading blurry after-images illusion behind. Kienzan Originally Kuririn's most powerful attack, the Kienzan is a razor sharp disk of energy that can slice through any opponent. Goku uses it in his battle against Super Buu. Voice actors In the English versions of Dragon Ball, the voice actors for Goku and many other characters of the series have changed as a result of the series changing dubbing studios and requiring recasting. Manga Goku appears as a cameo in the Neko Majin series as Neko Majin's teacher. Goku appears during a One Piece and Dragon Ball Crossover Cross Epoch. He travels with Luffy to Shenlong's tea party. TV In Japan, there is a short movie that features One Piece and Dragon Ball Z joining forces to take down Enel who tried to destroy Japan. Both Luffy and Goku team up to put an end to his evil. Characters personifying Goku and Gohan were featured in the Christmas special of Robot Chicken, in which Santa Claus asks Goku to save Christmas. "Gohan" in the episode was met with scrutiny because he looks like Goku from Dragonball GT. Fans debate who the character actually is, but Goku in one scene does call him Gohan. In the New Dr. Slump series, Arale Norimaki uses a new invention of Senbei's to bring the final Dragon Ball manga to life. Upon doing so, a black and white Goku and Kid Buu come to life as they fight in the middle of Arale's house. Later on, a younger Goku stays in Penguin Village as Senbei fixes his broken Dragon Radar so he can search for the remaining seventh Dragon Ball he needs. Upon his stay, Murasaki and Blue pay a visit to try and steal the Dragon Balls away. Needless to say, they are both outdone by Goku and Arale. In popular culture Goku battles Superman on a comic section of Wizard magazineThere are many similarties between Goku and Superman. Both have similar origins (sent to another planet, homeworlds destroyed, found by a nice elderly person who raised him as his own) and powers (super strength, super speed, flight, high-invulnerability) and both characters have died and been resurrected. In the 133rd edition (September 2002) of Wizard Magazine, a hypothetical Superman vs. Goku match up was published. Goku won the fight quite easily, needing to just tap into the first Super Saiyan level to defeat Superman.
