I know a lot of people love rastas and everything about rastas but do not have the time to find out who a rasta is and what is RASTA ? even some call themselves rastas without knowing what it takes and what to believe to become and True Rastafarian.?
The term “Rasta” is a shortened term for the Rastafarian movement that emerged in Jamaica in the 1930's and originally started among black members of the poor and peasant classes. Rasta is both a philosophy of life and a religion and some also say it's a way of life.BUT central to the religion is Haile Selassie I who was the last emperor of Ethiopia. In Rasta, Selassie is accepted as Jah, which is the Rasta name for God. The term Jah is a shortened version of the name Jehovah used in Psalms 68:4 of the King James version of the Bible:
"Sing unto God, sing praises to his name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name JAH, and rejoice before him"
The term “Rastafari” comes from the combination of a term of honor and a name. Ras means “Chief” and Tafari was the first name of Haile Selassie I prior to his coronation. Some individuals see Rastafarianism as a political movement, a sentiment that is offensive to religious Rasta people.
The Rastafarian movement did, however, gain power and popularity through many social and political aspirations of key Rasta Jamaican individuals. Publicist and organizer Marcus Garvey, who is regarded as a prophet by many members of the Rasta faith, used his cultural and political vision to inspire a new world view within the group.
The Rastafarian lifestyle includes keeping a strict vegan or vegetarian diet and using cannabis, NOT obligatory about the cannabis,but it is considered to be a sacred substance. The dietary laws are drawn from the Old Testament books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy. It should be noted that there are many individuals of different religions and belief systems that use the dietary suggestions of the Bible in different ways.
In the eight decades since its inception, Rasta has gained a great deal of notoriety and a healthy following. Rasta is still supported within the reggae community and 99.9% of reggae musicians are Rastafarians. Soldiers of Jah Army (also know as SOJA) is a modern reggae band that supports the Rasta lifestyle and belief system.We're JAH SOLDIERS !.
I also want to say that not all dreadlocks people are rastas, so lets quickly talk about what dreadlocks are;
The origin of dreadlocks is ancient. Dreadlocks can be traced back farther than the Rastafarians of Jamaica and are believed to have been worn in Biblical times. Ancient beliefs were developed in some areas that cutting the hair was UNHOLY, I said UNHOLY and if you ever had any scissors in your hair because you want it to grow in a certain way, Iam sorry you did the wrong thing. The actual name “dreadlocks” is thought to have come from either the belief that the individual sporting these locks looked dreadful or possibly that the ancient HOLY men who prominently wore dreadlocks were to be feared or dreaded, not really so because Rastafarians are PEACE LOVING PEOPLE. Regardless of the history, dreadlocks have made their way into popular mainstream culture largely due to legendary reggae singer Bob Marley.
Though many people consider dreadlocks a natural style, defining an individual rather than conforming to a fashion statement, others consider the style to be a rebellious statement. Some people do, in fact, grow dreadlocks for political, cultural, or religious belief, but mostly it’s a matter of individual expression. While some individuals who happen to have dreadlocks may have POOR personal HYGIENE, DIRTINESS is a negative and false connotation associated with dreadlocks because people mistakenly think they’re grown from unwashed hair.
In reality, dreadlocks can be washed and many people who sport dreadlocks, sometimes just called “dreads” or “locks,” take great care to achieve the style. It is particularly important to pay attention to dreadlocks, especially to dry them thoroughly when washed.
JAH FYAH.
