They've been compared to Tindersticks, Nick Drake, Love, the Go-Betweens, the Smiths, Pulp and Orange Juice, among others, but a quick spin of their second album, If You're Feeling Sinister, and you'll quickly realize how inadequate such comparisons often are. Scotland's Belle And Sebastian are an unusual combination of seven musicians who don't like to do things the traditional way. Founder Stuart Murdoch may or may not speak to the press depending on his mood. The band graciously turned down an opening tour slot with current rave Radiohead because they wanted to tour their way (which means playing unconventional venues, such as cafes, libraries, church halls). The whole band does not appear in their promotional photos; instead one or two members may make the shoot or else friends stand in. They've even suggested they'd break up in short time since they don't wish to view the music business as their business. They're positively daft I tell ya!
