It seems impossible for the world to describe the sound of 22 year old Georgia Anne Muldrow without such lofty comparisons to artists such as Sun Ra, J Dilla, Chaka Khan, and while understandable, it does not describe what Georgia brings to the table.
Born into a musical family in L.A., her father built instruments, her mother a singer/songwriter for the Pharaoh Sanders Ensemble. Georgia quickly demanded independence, and moved to New York at a young age. After arriving, she penned the “Worthnothings” EP, which was released in 2004 on her own “Epistrophic Peach” imprint. The EP quickly received worldwide recognition from those in the know, and caught the ears of Waajeed and Sa Ra Creative Partners, who quickly drafted in the young Georgia to write and produce tracks for upcoming albums by their respective groups. Stones Throw Records licensed and re-released “Worthnothings” in 2006, and quickly followed it with “Olesi: Fragments of an Earth”, where Georgia explores her take on the west coast Hip Hop sound.
Now, Miss Muldrow comes correct with her new PATTIE BLINGH pseudonym. Pattie Blingh allows Georgia a freedom to explore new concepts and ideas. Ramp Recordings introduces the world to PATTIE BLINGH and the AKEBULAN FIVE, with “SAGALA”.
Writing, producing and performing all of her own tracks, Georgia sparse production owes more to Prince than Pete Rock. Abrupt endings and loose timing give “Sagala” a truly unique sound. Her unrefined take on drum programming smack of an early RZA, while instrumental textures sound like early Funkadelic meeting The Cult. Her matchless delivery effortlessly sits angrily spitted verses next to epic layers of harmony, with the lyrical content akin to early David Bowie or Syd Barrett, while drawing on a stream of black consciousness which starts at Marvin’s “What’s Going On”, thru the Last Poets, to Public Enemy.
Seemly shy and unassuming, an incredibly cutting political commentary comes from behind an Afro and a broad grin. A real social awareness is often promised in these days of hype over content, but Pattie Blingh actually lives up to any hype that comes her way. And then some!
