ABOUT THE BAND:

Nightwish is a Finnish symphonic metal band formed in 1996 by keyboardist and lyricist, Tuomas Holopainen. Considered responsible for the subsequent popularity of symphonic metal, and for the foundation of symphonic power metal, the band started out as an acoustic project and Holopainen recruited guitarist Erno 'Emppu' Vuorinen and vocalist Tarja Turunen to record an acoustic demo album, consisting of 3 songs. After considering that Turunen's soprano vocals were too powerful for an acoustic project, Holopainen decided to add metal elements into the band's music and in early 1997, drummer Jukka Nevalainen joined the band and participated in Nightwish's recording of their first album 'Angels Fall First'. The album made a subsequent mark of success for the band, with the release of a single, 'The Carpenter', that reached 3rd position on the Finnish charts. However, it was in 1998 that the band received popularity outside of their home country, with the release of the album 'Oceanborn'. The second album was significantly darker sounding, featuring newly-recruited bassist Sami Vänskä and guest vocals from Tapio Wilska. In 2000, Nightwish's third album 'Wishmaster' was accompanied with a world tour, which gave them recognition in South America and also led to the release of a full-length concert DVD. Following the release came another: a cover of Gary Moore's song, the EP 'Over The Hills And Faraway', which featured guest vocals from Tapio Wilska and Sonata Arctica's Tony Kakko. However, the year 2001 was an uneasy one for the band, with the band members in disagreement with one another; Sami Vänskä then left the band and was replaced by Marco Hietala of Sinergy and Tarot fame. The replacement also led to second vocalist for the band, and Hietala accompanied Turunen's soprano vocals throughout the band's fourth studio album, 'Century Child'.
In 2004 Nightwish released a single, 'Nemo', from their new album 'Once', and the single became the most successful released as it reached the top ten in charts from different countries. The album utilised a full orchestra for most of the songs and gave more room for Hietala's raucous vocals, becoming their best album to date. Followed by a Once World Tour, the band also re-released an old single from 'Oceanborn', 'Sleeping Sun'.
The years 2005-2006 would mark a significant change in the band's line-up, and perhaps music. Nightwish recorded a new live DVD from Hartwall Areena, 'End Of An Era', where after the concert the four other band members decided to fire vocalist Tarja Turunen through an open letter, expressing their feelings towards her 'changed' behaviour. This led the other members of the band to embark on a search for a new female vocalist. To find a replacement for Turunen as the female vocalist of the band, on March 17, 2006 the band allowed vocalists interested for the position to send in demo tapes as an audition for the spot.
On May 24, 2007, the new singer was revealed to be 35 year old Anette Olzon from Sweden and the new single 'Eva' from their latest album 'Dark Passion Play'
