It just goes to show, you should like music for music. Not whether it is indie or not.

Ha Ha whoa, controversy city around here huh? Well though you guys are technically right, neither Modest Mouse nor The Flaming Lips currently reside on an Indie label, both bands had long stretches of time outside of major labels before they got to where they are currently. So we figure they don't get the tag dropped just because they got some well deserved success. Gotta grandfather in some of the greats that got us where we are today. Love the debate though and feel free to let us know what you guys are loving.

no way. i love indie music sometimes than other popular bands. sometimes they give in the deeper meaning and emotion of songs. people just dont appreciate them. and that's what sucks. got it?

Whether or not these are indie doesn't really matter to me. That the songs are majorly lacking in terms of lyrical and music quality is what I don't like about this list. These are not "hits". These are songs that would (or at least should) get played once or twice in a bar and then never again because the crowd could never get into it. Even if a band is majorly talented, if they play songs like these as the majority of their set list, they'll have very few listeners.

Girls album name is 'Album' and not 'Girls'.

I hate that "Inde" has become a catch all term that encompasses bands that are talented but have not been signed along with bands that have not been signed because they suck.

The flaming lips and modest mouse both have some of the most amazing musical qualities i have ever heard. It's not something to hate that these guys got a break. At one point they were independent, people like the fray and j-lo never went through a stage of being independent, they were rocketed to the top by the labels, people like modest mouse and the flaming lips went through a time where they were indie, giving them indie roots.

so chew on that, hippie.
(by the way i do listen to "real" indie as well, nuetral milk hotel, okkerville river, man man, devendra banhart, etc)
