JD73 is the brainchild of Leeds based keyboardist/musician/producer Dan Goldman. His cutting edge brand of his self-styled new genre ‘Electro-Funk’ exploded onto the music scene in 2007, with the release of ‘Happy People’ on Wax On Records - the new label from legendary producer George Evelyn (aka DJ EASE of Nightmares On Wax/ Warp Records).
A regular face on the UK music scene for the last 12 years, for the last 7, Dan has been playing keyboards on tour/tv and in the studio with Trip-Hop pioneers Morcheeba (Echo) featuring on their last 3 studio albums and co-writing 2 tracks for their upcoming album ‘Dive Deep.’ As well as helping produce recordings for artists such as Corinne Bailey Rae (EMI), Dan has also worked with fellow Leeds star LSK (recently on tour with Faithless) gigged with UK hip-hop artist TY, with members of the Jamoroquai band and with The Haggis Horns/Corinne Bailey-Rae supporting Mark Ronson. More recently he has played keyboards on a remix of Roots Manuva’s ‘Too cold,’ worked on new tracks for Zero 7 vocalist ‘Mosez’, UK beatboxer ‘Shlomo’, co-written tracks with DJ First Rate for his album Walky Talkyz, remixed ‘Circles’ for Domu/Nicola Kramer, (Treble O),’Days to Come’ for Bonobo (NinjaTune) remixed The New Mastersounds and also Manchester based nu jazz outfit ‘Sasso,’ along with further mixes for the ‘Far-out Recordings’ label. Dan recently remixed the single ‘African Pirates’ (Warp Records) for Nightmares On Wax and released 2 tracks on French House label Robsoul.
As iDJ magazine says about the follow up single to ‘Happy People’ ‘Electro Boogie’ (Music At Monumental)
“An excellent dance floor-centric slab of synth boogie”
DJ magazine adds:
“Does what it says on the label, knocking out some high quality electro boogie…Kicking it with some heavy vibes on Patrick Forge/Co-op fave (B side) Swing ‘Til It Hurts”
After a far reaching and exciting time on the road with Morcheeba, Dan decided it was time to focus his boundless energy on his debut solo project, JD73. The first demos were done during the long journeys between gigs on the Morcheeba tour bus.
‘I wanted to create something that the vibrant Nu-Jazz/broken beat/funk scene would love, whilst also paying homage to my heroes Herbie Hancock, Bob James and Patrice Rushen, all underpinned with some twisted and heavy dancefloor vibes!’
The result is a fascinating and infectious blend of jazz, funk, heavy-beat production and electronica with a clear nod to the vibe of those great 70’s recordings, whilst taking in contemporary soul and hip hop influences. Recorded in his custom-built studio throughout 2006-7, JD73’s debut 11-track album ‘Zeros and Ones’ is due out March 4th 2008 on Ropeadope Digital.
Dan goes on to say, ’The name for the JD73 project was sparked by Morcheeba’s Ross Godfrey; he nicknamed me the ’Jazz Doctor’ as I always used to jam around with jazzy licks/fixing up my Rhodes piano in sound checks. The’73’ part of the name refers to my main instrument-the Fender-Rhodes Suitcase 73 piano. I was also thrilled when in 2005 I became an official Moog Music inc. endorsee and signed with London based Monumental Management Ltd. I’m massively looking forward to the release of my album ‘Zeros and Ones’ in March 2008 and then getting on the road to spread Electro-Funk across the world!
The JD73 Live band will feature Luke Flowers (Cinematic Orchestra/Various) on Drums, Stuart McCallum (Cinematic Orchestra/Various) on guitar and Pete Turner on Bass. Look out for some slammin’ JD73 gigs throughout 2008 and beyond!
