Nah, I like some Luther. But, this version is brilliant and masterful. Done by two well-trained musicians, that worked this to death. You hear the pain and angst in both of their voices. Donny, he bears it all here.. When he comes from out of nowhere saying, "He, he buys you diamonds. Bright sparkling diamonds!", it's the detached desperation that gets you. As if to say, "There's no way in hell I can top that, other than with how I feel about you.". You know that he is telling you that the other guy is financially light years ahead of him. It hurts him a bit, and he makes no bones about telling you. As well as showing you just that. At 3:00-3:08, Roberta says "I" and squeezes until there is nothing left. Signifying that she has nothing left. In the end, they both fail, and must stand idly and excruciatingly on the outside looking in. "With my nose pressed against the window pane!!!".. Watching someone else supplant them, when it is they who has what is truly authentic. Whoever they are singing to is the true loser in this song. They don't make this anymore. This is art, most definitely.
