I used to consider myself rooted in country. But upon further consideration, I am rooted in music, period. It would be a shorter list to share which genres I do not favor. But none of my 'rules' are chiseled in stone. I do not 'like' disco, however, over the years I've grown accustomed to hearing it and there are a few I actually enjoy. Same thing applies to rap, opera and yes, even polka! Ah! I know, I can just write a new rule - regarding certain genres, I don't like them, until I do!
I like to sort out the genres into different playlists and not mix them because each suits a particular mood or frame of mind... or helps me to create a particular mood or frame of mind.
I am creating a playlist that contains all the rock songs I remember spanning 3 decades - the '50's, '60's and '70's. Why those years? I was born in the '50's and was turned onto '50's rock by friends who were encouraging me to find my own taste. I was raised by various guardians who were hardcore country or easy listening/big band listeners and who shared the mentality that rock 'n roll would bring about the end of life as we... knew it back in my impressionable years... or, wonder years. I was a closet listener of rock until I finally came out of the closet in the '70's. I still love country and probably know a lot more about country than I do rock. One of my friends turned me onto jazz and one of my sisters introduced me to the great sounds of Jonny Lang so my musical taste continues to expand while staying grounded in my earliest experiences with music. I even like a lot of the music my daughter listens to and created a playlist specifically for her.
What can I say, I love music.
