Katipunan was the secret revolutionary organization founded by Andres Bonifacio in 1892 to fight Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. Katipunan is a Tagalog word that literally means society or association.
"Alerta Katipunan" was taught in Philippine grade schools back in the 1960s-1970s. I learned the English version of the song back then, and it began as: "Fall in brave Katipunan, the country calls to its loyal men! Her banner proudly waves on high! On you she does rely!"
Inang Laya is an activist duo composed of Becky Demetillo and Karina David. The duo used to perform in anti-dictatorship rallies in the 1980s during the Marcos regime.
