THIS WEEK, we resist to the sounds of Colourmusic, a rare example of a band that does a good job blending genres to find its ‘sound’. In this case, it’s psychedelic pop and rock. Basing their work on Newton’s color theories and the resulting soundscapes, Colourmusic just dropped their debut LP “f, Monday, orange, February, venus, lunatic, 1or 13”, and no, I did not make that title up! The music doesn’t disappoint, every song is a well-thought out work bordering on the complex. Think the Who meet Queen with a little bit of Lou Reed sprinkled in for good measure.

Colourmusic gets downright inventive on stage. There’s no other way to say it, these guys are intriguingly bizarre and truly unforgiving. They’ve had their hair and clothes cut off, been painted, painted the stage and their equipment and who knows what else. They even spent a year (the “Roy Period”) in which all five members lived their lives as the same person, all the way down to trying to date the same girl. And somehow their music reflects this passion for the absurd in an incredibly authentic way when matched with their playing. Go see Colourmusic.

For those in the know, Colourmusic is on a serious rise. Before too long, everyone will be into them and we’ll be able to say we knew them when. They’ve been played on over 160 college radio stations, the Tonight Show and heard on several MTV shows. We’ve laid out below their remaining 2008 concert dates. Morningwood writes larger-than-life, decadent rock that has a brilliant attitude with loud shades of ‘I just don’t care’ woven into their polished sound. Suits us just fine. It’s nice to hear from a band that is comfortable playing in its shoes. Go see them live and you’ll be converted. This week we will hear three songs from the Sugarbaby EP to bring along the story of Maggie & Co.

The brainchild of badass singer Chantal Claret and bassist Pedro Yanowitz, Morningwood kicks your ass and leaves you smiling for more. I’ll spare you their resumes, but we’re talking about some serious players here. I would say their sound, intensity and drive link them to our show in a serious way. And, David Letterman ranks the Wood among his favorite guests ever. Not bad at all.

And in what’s definitely becoming a trend, I first heard Morningwood on YouTube. Great song, wacky video=letter from me. (Ok, so I’m a sucker for The Muppets).

Chantal and the crew are currently putting the finishing touches on their first full-length release and will tour away most of next year. So check them out, give a listen – leave a note and tell them we sent you.

Killola write. Killola play. Killola relentlessly promote. This four-piece band led by the venerable and sassy Lisa Rieffel is the first we signed up for LG15: The Resistance. The music kicks ass and drives scenes; their attitude is just right. Lots of punk, lots of garage. Definitely a good time. Killola brings a good time as much as they kick your ass. And they’re big fans of the show! We’ve been waiting to drop them on you for months. And the time is finally here.

Killola has been taking the world by storm since 2003 when they first started gigging around the LA indie punk scene. They embrace the Internet and have reaped the benefits all over the globe. Killola spent May 2007 touring the UK for the first time on the strength of their first single “Barrel of Donkeys”. (Check out the free “Live in England” sessions on Killola.com). They released their 2008 album “I am the Messer” on USB wristband drives and went back on the road playing 27 shows in 32 days this fall. They have no plans to let up and will be heading back out on the road in early 2009. “Messer” is raising quite a buzz in the indie world and blog circles, these guys are just getting started. Mark my words.

You might have seen Lisa R. as “Daisy” in the online series “Girltrash!” If you haven’t, go check out her performance. Lisa and guitarist Johnny Dunn also host “The Lisa and Johnny Show” on Dave Navarro’s Spread Radio Live every Monday night at 8PM (EST). Tune in, it’s a good time for sure.

THIS WEEEK we continue our three-part showcase of featured music in the show from the best bands appearing this week in the 2008 CMJ Festival in New York City. Now entering the ring, San Francisco’s very own, Scissors For Lefty! I love them. So should you. Ding Ding.

SFL is a favorite band to hail from the potent San Francisco indie scene and one that really has a chance to go all the way. You might have seen them on tour with Arctic Monkeys, Blonde Redhead, Shiny Toy Guns or The Fratelli’s. They get compared to The Killers but I don’t really get why, it’s not even close. A wise man once said, “If Scissors For Lefty were an article of clothing, they just might be your favorite sweater.” They just stick like that, glamour and all. Songs are filled with ecstasy, agony, loneliness and a certain swagger that ties the whole thing together, and it’s beautiful.

THIS WEEEK we begin a three-part showcase of featured music in the show from the best bands appearing right now in the 2008 CMJ Festival in New York City. Entering the ring first, the space-rock sounds of Seattle’s Voyager One. Ding Ding.

Voyager One mixes one part psychedelic rock, one part groove and zero parts pretention to make their brand of space-infused rock. There is something organic and straightforward about Voyager’s approach to songwriting. There’s an ethereal quality to every song, lots of drone, not too dark-but to the point. Lots of feeling and seemingly removed lyrics. Lots of “wonder” inspired by lots of listening. This is a rare balance that young bands find themselves spending too much time on either side of. Not for Jeramy & Co. The point is clear. Intentionally murky at times, but clear.

Voyager One have appeared at SXSW, CMJ, played live on KEXP’s “Midday Show” and toured with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. I caught them for the first time somewhere in between and knew right away they would have a place in The Resistance. The momentum is growing, the blogs have noticed. All aboard!

Even though Voyager One already has a few records under their belt I get the impression that there’s a bigger vision or plan they have yet to track down. It may take another solid record to get there. That said, if we’ve done our jobs right, this week’s episode should help send them on their way.

THIS WEEK, we resist with French synth-pop trendsetting cool kid trio with serious attitude, The Teenagers (XL Recordings).

A band that takes itself too seriously is a band destined for heartbreak. That’s what my mom always said…or something. Enter The Teenagers, a group that is seductively fun (and hyper aware of the online world) without caring one shred about what you or I think. You listen to the music, you watch their videos, you read their lyrics, and you start to get it. And disguised under those incredibly edgy lyrics are hints of classical training, composition and enough self-confidence to go around.

It’s hard to ignore that every song on “Reality Check” is well crafted and has sophistication well beneath the surface. Anxiety and excitement battle throughout. This tension guides the record. Music-wise, The Teenagers are in command, no amateur hour here as far as playing goes. Hook after hook, chorus after chorus, it’s tough to put this record down. And then it starts to grow on you…look out. Above all, The Teenagers are a good time and the life of any dance party worth attending. If you are stateside, that dance party may arrive in your town sooner than you think.

I was first turned on to The Teenagers after checking out their fan-created video for “Feeling Better”. I smiled, and I laughed. I wondered if we could tell our story to their music. And this week thankfully, we find out.

Chapter 3 Music - Push Play

THIS WEEK, we hear from New York’s latest homegrown sensation and the band that will soon be dominating your playlist, Push Play.

I had this dream a while back when I was in high school. I started a rock band with a few buddies. We started playing shows at every dive and pizza joint that would have us. Girls at school started to notice us. Guys at school were surprised by how hard we rocked. We handed out 20,000 flyers to promote our appearance at a big New York City club. We sold out that club, all 1,200 seats – and had to turn away another 500 screaming kids. All the big record labels begged to sign us. We scored a big time manager, the best attorney, the most prestigious agents and an opening slot on a tour with Miley Cyrus. All of a sudden we were being compared to the biggest bands in the world. The future never looked so bright. And then I woke up and found my dream was actually to be in Push Play.

It’s rare that we come across a group that is as focused on getting their name out there, as they are serious about playing music. Push Play is one of them. Ignore the 1.5 million plays and 50 thousand friends on Myspace. Ignore the self-released, self-supported “Deserted” which has sold over 40,000 copies and been at the top of the iTunes 100 chart. Ignore the New York Times label, “Regional Phenomenon”. Go to one Push Play concert and experience how beloved they are by those already in the know. Have you ever heard a crowd scream louder than the music? Does that remind you of a band your parents used to tell you about from Liverpool growing up? That’s the kind of absolute mania we are talking about. And, it’s hard to ignore mania.

THIS WEEK, our story is told to the sounds of Austin, Texas’ Voxtrot. Voxtrot is not just another indie rock band trying to get lucky. They write relentlessly, they tour, they connect with their fans through YouTube feeling contrived or over produced. Sound familiar? They are a single away from breaking out of the pack and becoming a household name. Why wait to get on board?

I first heard Voxtrot driving in the patchy rain from Colorado to the East Coast a few years ago somewhere on I-70. I was by myself-the sun was just coming out. I couldn’t believe then how soulful pop melodies could sound so sincere and manage to feel that way a thousand miles later. These melodies were so inviting, but at the same time, not forced. I get the feeling Voxtrot isn’t a “self-conscious” band that does whatever it can to bring in more fans or appease some skeptical label exec. I get the feeling Voxtrot makes music for Voxtrot, and the point is to always be getting better rather than reach a specific milestone or destination. And I remember thinking it was so cool that a band found a following by releasing their music in short bursts in the form of three EP’s. Smart music, smart business-don’t let people get too much at one time, don’t ever settle into ‘the same’. Fast forward a year or so to their online documentary “Reaching for the Lasers” about the recording of their first full-length LP “Voxtrot” and you can’t help but be inspired (and entertained).

The distinctive Voxtrot feel is eagerness and melody over instrumental layering. Songs get louder as they build, sections that could go for emotional broke are tempered and delicately executed. These guys strike a delicate nerve and because of it Voxtrot manages to separate themselves from the majority of acts in their way both on disc and in concert.

“Kid Gloves” – Quirky sound and feel gives way to cinematic chorus that stays with you. “You have to touch me with Kid Gloves”-sarcasm and sensitivity. These themes are part of our story, it’s nice to have music that reflects where we’re going.

“Easy” – A song for Jonas, a song for anyone trying to work out the doubt in their mind. And it’s not easy with “all the hours past, the body pressed to the wall. “Easy” is why Voxtrot is our band for Chapter 2.

“Blood Red Blood” – Ramesh’s vocal seems to work with and against the music. No fluff. Cinematic chorus. Horns are a nice touch. This one is a gem.
