About

Description
America, say hello to your new favorite Swedish songstress. Her name is Lykke Li, she is twenty-two years old, and her debut four-song EP, Little Bit, out on her own label LL Recordings on May 6th, 2008, is an amazing introduction to an artist whose name we’re pretty sure you’ll be hearing all year long.
Recorded in Lykke Li’s hometown of Stockholm and New York City, and produced by Bjorn Yttling of Peter, Bjorn and John, the songs on Little Bit are a reflection of Lykke Li’s globe-trotting upbringing, marrying sounds that are diverse and worldly into incredible three minute pop songs. Lykke Li spent some of her formative years dancing through the hills of Portugal to Madonna’s Immaculate Collection on her walkman, traipsed through the countryside in India with her photographer mother and musician father, and landed in Brooklyn at the age of nineteen just for the hell of it, talking her way into clubs and watching television in her Bushwick sublet. Lykke Li’s uncontainable spirit and drive towards exploration conveys itself perfectly in her songs – they defy genre classifications and follow any aural road they choose. And it’s this particular strain of otherworldliness, a quality found innately in Lykke Li, that has ignited quite a commotion on both sides of the Atlantic. Her debut album, Youth Novels, already released on her own label in Sweden (to see release here later this year), has garnered a deafening roar of acclaim in the UK. Now, following a handful of wildly received shows at this year’s SXSW, Little Bit and its accompanying tracks are hitting our shores, and we couldn’t be more excited.

Joining a few of the dots between Feist, Robyn, Peter, Bjorn and John and Bjork, “Little Bit” is a hushed, breath-y, out-of-the-box smash. It’s deceptively simple and undeniably addictive, full of coquettish “oohs,” a Casio keyboard beat and a dizzy organ laced through the chorus as Lykke Li waxes poetic on the thrills and pitfalls of getting very physical indeed. “Dance Dance Dance” recalls Norma Frazer with Dancehall horns and honeyed, harmonied back-up vocals, while “Everybody But Me” features a leftfield arrangement of drum taps and a harmonium set against Lykke Li’s feathery vocals. “Time Flies” caps off the EP, a stark, piano-driven tune centered around a two chord melody and Lykke Li’s voice spilling tales of her vulnerabilities and sounding as soft as baby’s breath.

Lykke Li will be touring America for the first time this spring on a double headlining bill with fellow Swedes El Perro Del Mar and special guest Anna Ternheim. Catch her NOW.

We got the okay to shoot at the Phoenix hotel but it was going to cost 50 bucks. The place was an oasis in the midst of the crumbling tenderloin district where black gum spots marked the sidewalks like shameful freckles and every corner covered with tattered cardboard boxes—vacant beds from the previous evening. Nate didn’t like the idea of paying 50 bucks so after greeting the tour bus we immediately walked the 6 or so blocks down to the civic center. We were a motley crue, traveling in little bundles, I barely got their names, but knew who they were. We were like gypsies, nomadic, carrying homes on our backs, stands, guitars, percussion, a tiny piano that schroder from peanuts might have played, bells, a trunk full of odds and ends, I really wanted to talk to them, make them laugh.

At the heart of the civic center is city hall, 1 point in a triangle of puritan white buildings with jutting columns, marble-like steps and daunting doorways that also includes the opera house and some museum you can skip. The consistent coastal wind raced and howled like a child showing off and ruffled the keffiyeh wrapped around Lykke’s neck. I was told she had a cold and was trying to keep her throat warm, I was worried. They decided to shoot the first song on the steps of city hall, in the long shadow those columns cast where it had to be at least 5 degrees colder. You can hear the wind whining behind their singing.

Somebodys Baby - El Perro Del Mar & Lykke Li

Halfway through the song, 2 police officers in cacky uniforms with hissing shoulder radios came from inside the building onto the steps. They ambled toward the group like a couple of gunslingers, in no hurry, holding weight on each foot before pivoting back, advancing slowly and giving each other the eye. For a second I considered letting the cops stop the song, after all isn’t the point to let circumstance consume the experience? But i stepped in front of them with my 1st finger up asking for 1 minute, because i just wanted to hear them finish. So they did.

About 500 yards away, in the sliver of sunlight San Francisco had granted that day was a fenced in playground. I mounted the monkey bars and swung like an idiot while everyone else got ready for the second song. Again the group crowded around the girls, shielding them from the wind and us strangers. Just as the band began to play and Lykke began to shimmy and shake, two little girls followed loosely by their father charged the blue obstacle course with native speed and it started to feel like we were all there to play. Like the song Lykke sang was written on that same playground several years ago and then stored away in her memory waiting for those ladders, tic tac toe, squeaky footbridge and curvy slide to bring it back with a rush of memory and we were just lucky enough to see it come out.
