If you’ve never heard of Mahasin then consider yourself to be amongst the lucky few to discover her first! This sassy singer is the perfect blend of Pop and R&B with enough soul left over to quiet the non-believers. With life lessons learned and much deserved confidence under her belt, her new album “Wind It Up!“ is long over due.
Born and raised in Harlem, USA, Mahasin remains a student of the world. Traveling to China while still in high school, she found herself to be an ambassador for those in the homogenous society who had never seen or interacted with an African American. This eye opening experience gave Mahasin the courage to follow her dreams. After coming back to the states and being overheard by a fellow classmate while singing in the staircase, she was dared to join a talent contest. “I always knew I could sing but I was too petrified to sing in front of anyone, including and especially family. I did the contest and haven’t shut up since!” The rest is history. .
Mahasin has performed all over New York City doing showcases and open mics all in preparation for becoming the artist she is today. Now with one album already under her belt (Hot Pink!), Mahasin’s Wind It Up! personifies the meaning of “Sistas are doin it for themselves” The album, encompasses the many stages of relationships, but from the female point of view. “This album is not a love album but it is an album about love. People fall in and out of love all the time and I wrote these songs to capture the experience of how we will forever be going around in circles.” Mahasin’s music has been influenced by several contemporary artists including R. Kelly and Alicia Keys. These influences have helped to give birth to songs such as the drawer dropping song “In the Dark” and “Home” which outlines what it is her lover needs to come back to.
So yes, while the album exudes with confidence and sensual independence, there is still something Mahasin wants the fellas to keep in mind, “although you might hear women saying ‘we don’t need men‘, we damn sure want them so come on, let’s make it happen!” So stay tuned because before you know it, Mahasin will be taking over a city near you…!
