The Best Unsigned Artist You Ever Heard. The Next Big Superstar.
Hailing from Chesapeake, VA, Malcolm Smalls the 18 year-old musician is making noise in his underrated and under appreciated state. "These dudes learn here, are influenced here, get big here and forget all about us," Malcolm Smalls feels about the big-name artists who were once located in the Commonwealth and later moved on to different locations. "Virginia deserves to be the spot to be at. We changed radio, we have some of the best and original producers. From Timbo to the Neptunes to Danja to Nottz to Hannon Lane, we truly can't be fucked with. But it's like we're still overlooked. Maybe we need a bigger representation. I'd love to help that."
Even though he was born in New Jersey, Malcolm seems to have a huge amount of respect for the state he grew up in. Maybe because it was here where he was introduced to rap music, having a strong remembrance of first hearing 36 Chambers on cassette tape. It was here when he purchased his first CD, the Score by the Fugees, and it was here where he wrote his first rap after listening to Hard Knock Life by Jay-Z. It was here where he used to copy melodies on his casio keyboard, trying to mimick the sounds of the Neptunes and it was here where Malcolm decided to be in the entertainment industry.
"Some people don't understand me. Music is my life. There's no better feeling than putting your soul in a track, and there's no better feeling then discovering that band or artist that somehow sounds like he's speaking directly to or for you. I rather be in a studio than be in a club or at another event, and even if I am at these other places I'm dreaming of melodies or scheming on how to further increase my music and fan base. I'm lucky to have found something that makes me happy. It's the main reason I'm so competitive. I will not let some one who doesn't have the same passion, the same love for every aspect of music to say they are better than me or discourage me."
Malcolm Smalls seems to be settled on a lot of things in his life and music, but one thing he will not stay on is one particular style. "I have various personalities, musically. This came from my large scope of influences, you know. I can sit at my home listening to the bizarre melodies of David Gilmour, or the soul sound of Dap-Kings. The progressions and songwriting skills of say Burt Bacharach, the synthesis Stuart Price or Brian Eno would use. Then I can drive in my car listening to Young Jeezy or Lil Wayne. Skip genres and listen to some Santogold, M.I.A, Circa Survive, etc. Then I can hit up a party and wild out to Soulja Boy. There's music perfect for certain situations and I want to emphasize that. I want to create various types of music rather than stick to Hip Hop. I try to do this by coming up with different artist names, so if you purchase something by Percy Adams, you know its going to be some soulful shit. If you purchase something by Chop you know it's going to be some hardcore, punchline shit."
Along with producing, rapping, and singing he also dwells into the world of photography and design. From making his own album covers, he has learned the basic steps in photoshop and wishes to indulge in fashion design. He also has a desire for directing movies and even screenwriting. "An auteur, I want to treat my music like directors and actors treat their projects. To spend hours and months just to develop and embellish themselves into their character or work. I wish more artists would have this approach, rather than let me get a few beats and I'll rap or sing on various topics. Album sales are down for a reason. Everything sounds thoughtless, just a bunch of songs thrown on a disc."- written by James Ermick
