I suppose I was searching for some clarity regarding your remarks and you definitely gave it. Further I'd agree that you're correct on both points. The first part, about lying bed while your ex played Nantes is totally a subjective experience of course, but I can think of similar experiences in my own life. And that leads to your second point about music being a whole composed of fragments of memory and experiences. Clearly there is the physical song, but what makes it special are the emotions it elicits, and most emotions seem to be grounded in memory/experience. So yeah, well said.

Stefan: Primarily nostalgic recollections relating to an ex who exposed me to Beirut in the first place (specifically the Flying Club Cup album). So there's an association of lying in bed and hearing it for the first time, person in question, etc.

That said, I think a strong argument could be made that the experience of music is really just the remembering of traces of past experience bound together by a song or it's pieces--more specific memories like above just being an extreme example. Music probably has only a little intrinsic weight to it, though some of those factors (cultural etc.) are common enough between people that we can appreciate each others experiencing of music despite it's individually-dependent emotional textures. ...

Well it's been a long time, long time now
Since I've seen you smile
And I'll gamble away my fright
And I'll gamble away my time
And in a year, a year or so
This will slip into the sea
Well it's been a long time, long time now
Since I've seen you smile

Nobody raise their voices
Just another night in Nantes
Nobody raise their voices
Just another night in Nantes
