Description
The Noise Pop Festival returns Tuesday, February 24th through Sunday, March 1st, 2009. Are you ready for the most ambitious iteration of San Francisco’s favorite indie music, arts and film festival yet? For our 17th anniversary, Noise Pop 2009 will honor what's made it the best-loved celebration of indie music and culture since 1993.

Every year, Noise Pop takes over the best-loved venues in San Francisco for six nights to host unforgettable performances by nationally-known indie rock, electronic, punk and cutting edge musical artists teamed up with the best local bands, transforming the city into an almost week-long celebration of the finest that the underground and not-so-underground has to offer. 2007 marked Noise Pop's 15th year as San Francisco's premier celebration of independent music, art, film and culture and 2008 is the festival's sweet 16 party. Established in San Francisco in 1993, Noise Pop started as a one-night event featuring the best underground rock bands that the Bay Area could dish up. With live music as it's focal point, Noise Pop has developed into full-scale cultural happening, adding gallery art shows, a music-themed film festival, educational panel discussions with musicians and music industry professions, an indie designer trunk sale and a number of planned as well as spontaneous shin-digs.

Some of the finest bands in America - and now some of the biggest - have played Noise Pop including Modest Mouse, the White Stripes, Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes, The Shins, Jimmy Eat World, The Flaming Lips, The Decemberists, The Faint, Guided By Voices, Nada Surf, Hot Hot Heat, Devendra Banhart, Frank Black (The Pixies), Grandaddy, Neko Case, Cibo Matto, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Stephen Malkmus & Jicks, Bob Mould (Hüsker Dü), The New Pornographers, Polyphonic Spree, Rilo Kiley, Feist, Jeff Tweedy (Wilco), and Spoon.

Exhibitions, Clinics, Film Screenings, Art Projects and More Round-out Weekend Experience

This weekend, the Wanderlust Festival will make its debut as one of the first festival experiences to combine a full-fledged yoga retreat with an indie rock music festival, and it will all go down in the incredible natural setting of Squaw Valley USA in North Lake Tahoe, California. Happening July 24-26, Wanderlust is set to feature some of the biggest names in the yoga community, such as Shiva Rea and John Friend, as well as some of the most respected artists in the independent music scene including Spoon, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Andrew Bird, Jenny Lewis, Broken Social Scene, Gillian Welch, and more.

Yoga and music are two main attractions at Wanderlust. Chances are by now most have selected the yoga classes they want to take, made their music schedules, and are ready to rock at one of Wanderlust’s three music stages. But there is a lot more to see and do at Wanderlust. Below are a few highlights:

The Kula Village. Located in the Squaw Valley Village, the Kula Village is the centerpiece of the Wanderlust weekend. TheKula Village will showcase many vendors and not-for-profit groups, as well as wide array of restaurants that will feature menus with fresh, locally grown food. During the day, the Casbah Stage will feature acoustic music. Activities in the KulaVillage are free and open to the public.

Converse Geo-Dome at Gold Coast. This colossal structure up at Gold Coast is an interactive playpen for grown-up kids. Tap into your expressive side and create a custom silk-screened t-shirt to take home. Jump up on the Gibson stage for a rock star photo opp. Visit the resident poet and take home a haiku or sonnet inspired by you. Leave your mark on the Converse Geo-Dome with giant ink pens used to decorate the outside of the structure. Video screens inside will be showing films from the Road to Wanderlust film competition.

LunaChix Bike Clinic and LUNAFEST Film Exhibition. Join the Tahoe Luna Chix professional mountain bike team for a free one-hour clinic Saturday and Sunday from 11am to noon in the parking lot at Squaw Valley. A mini-race course will be set-up for you to test your pedal skills. LUNAFEST will showcase short films for women, about women, and directed by women and will take place in the Aplenglow Room in the Squaw Valley Village on Saturday night at 8:45pm. LUNAFEST is free for all Wanderlust ticketholders, though at $5 donation is suggested. All proceeds will benefit the Breast Cancer Fund.

Reverb Eco Village. The Reverb Eco Village was created in 2005 through a partnership between IZSTYLE and the environmental non-profit group Reverb, which aims to educate and engage musicians and their fans to take action toward a more sustainable future. The village includes local, regional and national environmental non-profit groups along side alternative energy and transportation exhibits. It also highlights all natural/organic food sampling and outdoor adventure sports equipment demos with brands such as Anheuser-Busch, Stonyfield Farm, Honest Tea, SIGG and Specialized. Visit the Reverb Eco Village in the Kula Village.

Yogaslackers. Head over to the Gold Coast to check-out the Yogaslackers exhibition and clinics. These yogis are definitely not slackers and they are known for their yoga poses done above ground on a slackline. Think of it as yoga done on a tightrope. It is worth checking out.

Fire and Ice Dinner. Squaw's executive chef Scott Rutter, along with 3 other top chefs, have created a special dinner to be served on the deck of the Arc near the Gold Coast stage on Saturday night beginning at 6 pm. The menu will feature organic and local produce, a full grill, and even an ice sculpture. It's a gourmet meal in a unique setting, all for a reasonable prix fixe price of $29.50 including a complementary glass of premium wine or beer. First come, first served. Reservations can be secured by contacting srutter@squaw.com.

Happiness Is… Film Screening. The Declaration of Independence famously grants us the right to pursue happiness. And Americans spend great amounts of time and energy chasing it. But for many people, we’re not even sure what it is we’re chasing. Documentary filmmaker Andrew Shapter set out on a cinematic road trip to explore the myths and the truths of the “pursuit of Happiness” in America. This film provides an unequaled view into the hearts and minds of spiritual leaders like the Dalai Lama, philanthropists, authors, scholars, and everyday people, along with a few artists like John Mellencamp and Willie Nelson. The screening will take place in the Alpenglow Room at 9 pm. The screening is free and open to the public.

Tickets are still available for Wanderlust through the website at www.wanderlustfestival.com. All prices are inclusive of service fees, so what you see is what you’ll pay at check-out. Tickets can also be purchased locally at New Moon Natural Foods, Joby’s Music, Alice’s Mountain Market in the Village at Squaw, and the Wanderlust Box Office. The Wanderlust Box Office will be open 7am-10pm on Friday, 7am to 11pm on Saturday, and 10am to 6pm on Sunday. Cash and credit cards are accepted.

Wanderlust is produced by Velour Music Group, in conjunction with C3 Presents (Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits Music Festival) and Starr Hill Presents (Bonnaroo, Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival).
