Tokio Hotel - Summer "Dream Up!" interview
Posted in Interviews on Mar 03, 2008 at 1:26 PM
Current mood: Loved

What strong memories do you have of the 483 Tour?

Bill: This tour brought us a crazy amount of things way beyond our expectations. First off, the public was there, every opportunity, and what a public! Our fans are marvelously expressive and created magical moments every concert. And the most incredible thing in this adventure was discovering the same fervor outside of our borders. Because this time, we played on big European stages! No other German artist or band has ever pulled off a performance like that before.
Tom: Some major methods were used to produce this tour. On the road, we were accompanied by a team of 50 people, and the equipment was so bulky that we needed no less than six enormous trucks to transport it all. This colossal infrastructure let us surpass ourselves on stage and progress. From now on, we play in the major courts (smiles)!

What made you decide to prolong the adventure in France this fall?

Bill: There's a magical bond between us and the French public. The 483 Tour took place in France in April, first at the Zenith in Paris, and then at the Zenith in Nancy. In Paris just as in Nancy, the ardor of the fans literally electrified us. The exchanges with the audiences were too moving, too intense not to want to prolong them. The night of our second concert, while greeting the crowd, I'd already made the decision to come back to France...I knew that Tom, Gustav, and Georg shared the same sentiment.

Other groups try to put themselves in the wake of your success...

Tom: We know the mechanics of the record industry well. When a singer or group becomes a success, others try to imitate them. So in Germany, it's not rare to see the papers present bands as "the new Tokio Hotel." But we don't feel threatened because we know our success isn't based off a marketing recipe. We have a strong artistic identity that rests on our years of work and friendship. And above all, our relation with the public is authentic.
Bill: Our success in France prompts other German rock bands to go abroad in their turn. That doesn't bother us; on the contrary, we're more proud to be taken as models (smiles)...

Do you ever fear/dread failure?

Bill: When you've tasted the joys of the stage and ovations, you can no longer give them up. And in our case, we've been badly habituated, almost too spoiled, even (smiles)! In Germany, our sudden success led us to concert halls with thousands of people straight from the start. Since then, I can't stand being rejected by the fans. We can't go back anymore!

How do you envision the evolution of the group?

Bill: Things go really quickly for us...To be honest, we don't have the time to plan in the future. It's already hard to know what the exact plans of the next day will be. Most often, when I get up, I never know where I am! Just after I wake up, it takes me some time to get my bearings and remember which hotel, city, and country we landed in the night before. It's a very unstabilising feeling.
Tom: I have secret dreams for the band; some are even a little crazy. But dreams aren't made to be reasonable!

Is conquering the US part of these dreams?

Tom: It's true that America is a big professional fantasy, a sort of triumph..... But it's still too early to talk about it. (Way to ruin MY dreams, Tom. T__T )

Yet you've already planned to go to the US this summer...

Bill: It's true that a trip to America is one of our projects for the summer. But this escapade will be purely touristic. We're not going there to make the band known, just to have a good time. We all need real vacations, in total anonymity, and I'm stamping my feet with impatience to discover a city like New York. Tom, Gustav, and Georg evidently wanted to follow me in this adventure. This will be the first trip to America for all of us.

A very hot summer!

After a marathon year marked by the release of the album Zimmer 483, a triumphant tour, and an avalanche of movements everywhere in Europe, Bill, Tom, Gustav, and Georg take advantage of summer to recharge their batteries. A good occasion to know a little bit more about their memories of vacation...

Gustav Schafer

For you, summer rhymes with...

"Austria, the mountains, and my parents. Each year, we left for two weeks as a family hiking cross-country, backpacks on our shoulders and hair blowing in the wind."

Your best vacation memory

"When I was a kid, my parents sent me to a camp near the Baltic Sea, north of Germany, in the Land of Mecklenburg, to be precise. Those moments of escape were really magical. There, I found lots of friends, and we left on an adventure in canoes the length of the coast. At night, we camped around a fire. It was great."

Your worst vacation memory

"My uncle recently reminded me of a childhood anecdote that dug up painful memories...I was 6 years old, and for the first time in my life, my parents left me alone for a while with my grandmother. I fell asleep in the car on the way, and when I woke up, the next morning, my parents were gone, without even saying good-bye...I immediately thought they had decided to abandon me. Inconsolable, I spent the following days crying in my corner."

Your ideal program of relaxation

"Simply having good times with my buddies, spontaneously going somewhere together, where the destination doesn't matter in that moment when you have the feeling of being free and being able to go where you want. In my eyes, nothing is more exciting than a little improvised escapade according to your mood and your desires."

Bill Kaulitz

For you, summer rhymes with...

"I immediately think of freedom and fun between friends, of the sun, the sea, and also of a couple memorable drinking sprees...\

Your best vacation memory

"In summer, I went on a trip with Tom and some friends all over Germany. For vacation, the train company had a bargain system that let you, only buying one ticket, go around the whole country without limit. So we amused ourselves by going from train to train, without even knowing where we were going. We were happy like that, wandering around with friends, packs of beer in hand."

Your worst summer memory

"When we were 9, our mother sent Tom and me to summer camp: a real nightmare! We camped for two weeks in tents that were terribly uncomfortable and that leaked...I still have really awful memories! Nobody could ever convince me to sleep under a tent again. Really, I hate camping!"

Your favorite destination

"I've always dreamed of a paradisaical island in the Bahamas or the Caribbean. On the other hand, I want to discover New York just as badly."

---

Tom Kaulitz

For you, summer rhymes with...

"An island at the end of the world, a beach with blond sand, turquoise water, a scorching sun, and very long naps."

Your best vacation memory

"I have an imperishable memory of my vacation in the clubs in Spain. In places like that, there are always tons of pretty girls, and thus hundreds of occasions for interesting encounters...When I got there, I was like a crazy person [idiot?], not knowing which way to turn. It's great to come to a vacation place where the possibilities of having a good time, in all sense of the phrase, are guaranteed..."

Your worst vacation memory

"I don't really have bad memories of vacation, since even when we don't have the chance to go away, I amused myself at the public pool or at the lake...At any rate, everything was better than going to school (smiles)! A really bad memory? I inevitably think of field trips that I participated in once or twice. I hated camping, just like I hated seeing the teacher who came with us in a bikini...She was scary and seeing her in a bathing suit terrified me! I don't know why I keep this nightmarish vision in mind..."

Your ideal program of relaxation

"My dream vacation inevitably takes place on an island with my buddies. Voila the scenario I like to imagine at night when I sleep: I see us, my friends and I, racing on jet skis at 100 mph; races that I win every time, of course! After these thrilling nautical activities, I go bask on the beach, where I am quickly joined by the Olsen twins. Very gently, they suggest rubbing sun tan lotion on my back. I'll let you imagine the rest..." ( All I can say is ELL EM EFF AY OH TOM.)

---

Georg Listing

For you, summer rhymes with...

"Luxury, calm, and sensuality.... Luxury, since during summer vacation I let myself have all sorts of financial whims...I spend without counting. Calm, next, because in the course of vacation, time seems suspended. I live to my rhythm without ever looking at my watch. In that way I can sleep for 16 hours straight without anything or anyone coming to bother me. Finally, I can put all the constraints of time and planning behind me. Sensuality, finally, because summer is the time for all pleasures, the time when all your senses are awake...In summer, more than ever, I love to meet pretty young girls (laughs)!" (When he says 'young' all I can think of is PEDOSMILE)

Your best vacation memory

"Among all the pretty images that come to mind, I have a special attachment to the moments I've had in total simplicity with my dog, Garon. Going on long walks with him like two old friends, playing together in the fields, having fun in the river, all those instants are dear to my heart."

Your ideal program of relaxation

"This summer, I decided to enjoy myself and make some of my fantasies of vacation come true. To start, I invited my parents and my best friend, who is like a brother to me, to spend two dream weeks under the tropical sun. The place, which I won't reveal, is simply paradise! There, we will be housed like princes. As for activities, I've planned several rounds of golf and scuba-diving trips. The rest of the time, I'll be basking on the beach, sipping all sorts of cocktails in charming company..."

Your favorite destination

"Like most people, my dream destination resembles a postcard: a beach with fine sand, palm trees, turquoise water, and groups of beautifully tanned girls...In short, a magical island in the Caribbean of the Bahamas."
