From the steering wheel, he bent to change the CD playing in the car stereo. The soft music floated effortlessly, while she kept staring at the road ahead.

“Will you miss me?” She asked without looking at him.

“Why do you still have to ask?”

“Because I want to know.”

“You know already how much I will miss you.”

“Did you enjoy the company of my family?”

“ I hate you for asking those kinds of questions.”

“But please answer. Do you like my mom, my sister?”

“I do, I really do, and it hurts me to think that that first meeting is gonna be the last. Please stop asking, you’re hurting me more.”

She put her arms around him and smiled. “I’ll miss you too, I really will.”

He gave her a quick glance. “No you won’t. If you will, you will not leave me.”

“But you know that I have to. I’ve explained that to you for so many times, and you understand me, right?”

“I do, I’m just hurting.”

“Please don’t tell me that. I’m hurting too. This love isn’t meant for us. We can only remember the moments, but we can’t keep them.”

With his free hand, he held her head and made her lay on his lap. “I guess you better sleep, you still have work tomorrow,” he said as he gently patted her shoulder and caressed her hair.

She laid there, contemplating if she’ll sleep, while he kept on driving, occasionally stroking her hair. The music kept playing.

“I love you so much…” She heard the words just before she closed her eyes. She wanted to cry.

“I love you so much too… I hope you’ll be okay.”

He patted her shoulder again and smiled, giving her a quick glance before attending to the road again. “Hush baby, sleep now. I’ll be all right. It will certainly take time but I’ll try to manage.”

She was still sleeping on his lap when she felt a gentle tap at her cheek. He was smiling when she opened her eyes.

“Wake up sleepy head, we’re here.”

She straightened her clothes and grabbed her bag. He bent to kiss her. She was about to open the door when he hugged her so tight, his heart beating so fast that it's almost deafening.

"Please don't leave me, you're my life."

She stroked his face, as if memorizing every lines and curves, then she tore herself from his arms and smiled bitterly. She was surprised on how great the effort she needed to be able to open the car door.

“Goodbye for good, I’ll really miss you,” she said.

“Don’t speak, just leave,” he replied without looking at her. His eyes were fixed on the road.

She quietly got out of the car, gave it a second look and walked away.

A song was faintly playing from a distance. When she deciphered the tune, it was the same song playing a while ago.

When she looked back, he was still there. She was certain she saw tears in his eyes through the clear windshield. She wanted to run back to him and say she’s not leaving, but she came to her senses just before she could make a step.

She walked away without looking back. She didn’t hear a car leaving.

She knows he’s still there, but she kept on walking.

When she reached the corner, a car has been waiting for her there. She heard the very familiar voice as the door opened.

“Come on in, honey, it’s cold there.”

She smelled the familiar scent of the car, and his after-shave cologne. He bent to give her a kiss.

“Honey, I’m glad you’re back, I’ve missed you so much. So how’s your weekend with your family? How’s Mom? Did they miss me?”

She smiled her best smile and started to talk about her vacation. Just then, she heard a car leaving. She knew at that moment, she lost him for good.

She almost choked in her words.
