Johnson Kwah, I think I read somewhere back in 1997, when the song was released that Richard Ashcroft wrote the song in response to the death of his father (who died off cancer)when Ashcroft was about 11 or 12 yrs old. The line, 'The Drugs Don't work, they just make you worse' has got two meanngs:-

1) The drugs that are being given to his father are not working and are instead making him worse

2) The undesired effect of drugs being taken to block out the pain of losing your father.
