blog post "The Great Wall" China
Category: For My Friends
Posted: Jul 13, 2009 at 4:34 PM
PhotobucketThere is little that can be said about the Great Wall of China that has not been stated over and over again throughout the wall"s 2000 year history.

Photobucket

PhotobucketConstruction of the Great Wall started in 221 BC to defend the Middle Kingdom from Mongol soldiers. But many of the sections were already in place, built by a series of independent kingdoms stretched across the land, from Shanhaiguan on the east coast to Jiayuguan in the Gobi Desert - Emperor Qin Shihuang merely oversaw the joining of these walls.

Photobucket

PhotobucketThe first chapter in the history of the Great Wall of China ended in 207 BC, when the last of the over 6 billion cubic feet of compacted earth was set into place.

Photobucket

PhotobucketThe Great Wall was only moderately effective in carrying out its purpose, even after it was faced with bricks and stones. It"s real value came in the way it eased transportation throughout the land - acting as a kind of elevated thruway, equipment, goods and passengers could more easily traverse the arduous mountainous wilderness that enveloped the Great Wall.

Photobucket

PhotobucketAs strange as it seems now, before a Great Wall of China tour was a prerequisite on any trip to the country, many of the sections fell into disrepair as time passed and the import of the towering structure lessened as marauding nomads dispersed into the annals of time. The history of the Great Wall of China, and its return to significance was actually the work of the tourist industry - now there are plenty of popular sites where the day tripper can behold one of the most famous landmarks in the world.

Photobucket

PhotobucketExperienced travelers know that near the small town of Gubeikou, the remains at Simatai are one of the best places to get an unfettered and more authentic look at the Great Wall of China. Watchtowers line the walls, haphazardly winging their way across the landscape.

Photobucket

PhotobucketThe only problem with Simatai is that it is a much more rigorous hike to view the Wall - the terrain ranges from sharp inclines to steep dropoffs almost without warning, so it is certainly not for the beginning hiker. But those that make the trip to Simatai are sure to be rewarded with the best views in all of China...

Photobucket

PhotobucketThe Great Wall was on 7 July 2007 voted as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.

Photobucket*Gaylord Ho was born April 11, 1950, in Hsin-Wu, Taiwan. Gaylord Ho is masterfully skillful sculptor and an inspired artist.
His goal in every sculpture is to bring to life the emotion of the moment being frozen forever in clay.

Photobucket

*An angel in repose. She sits with arms folded over her legs with face uplifted and eyes closed in quiet meditation as she seems to listen to a
heavenly choir; a quiet heart and a moment of ease in a world of bustle and noise. Gaylord practices Tai Chi every morning. This ancient exercise is
one of slow motions, controlled breathing and quiet meditation.

Photobucket

*Gaylord is a very spiritual person who believes strongly in the strength of the inner self.
He is a quiet and thoughtful person who treats himself and the world around him with gentle respect.

Photobucket

*A celebration of the angel in every woman, at all stages and seasons of her life. This angel on earth is enfolded by an autumn leaf that
represents her earthly wings. Gaylord feels that the ability to bring life into the world and to nurture that life gives every woman the quality
of angels.

Photobucket

*It is not necessary that they all have wings. It is o.k. for them to celebrate their humanness. They are revered and loved by those
of us incapable of this life giving quality. This sculpt represents these angels on earth; protected and nurtured by the earth itself.

Photobucket

*Gaylord formed his own sculpture and design company in 1979 and has achieved much commercial success. He is world renowned in the gift and collectibles industry for his numerous award-winning designs. He has been recognized by the industry with frequent nominations as "Artist of the Year". He has won awards for his sculptures every year for the past 20 years.

Photobucket

*Gaylord travels extensively when not sculpting. He shares his time between two homes, one in Chungli, Taiwan and one in Palos Verdes, CA. He also spends time in his satellite sculpting studio in Shanghai, China. It's beautiful public park setting allows him time to concentrate on his quiet sculpting job while also practicing his other passion...teaching. Gaylord spends a lot of his time teaching other sculptors and student sculptors about the fine points of his profession. He teaches students in Taiwan and Shanghai.

blog post "The Rose City" of Petra, Jordan
Category: ---------------------------------
Posted: Jun 23, 2009 at 7:22 AM
PhotobucketPhotobucketPetra is a famous city carved out of stone, hidden by towering sandstone mountains in Jordan. It was an important city, and was the main city of an ancient people called the Nabataens, who lived in southern Jordan, Canaan and the northern part of Arabia, and created a kingdom with its capital at Petra. The facade, carved out from the sandstone canyon wall, is 120 feet high. It is the best preserved of the structures in Petra. The name Khazneh, which means "treasury" comes from the legend that it was used as a hiding place for treasure. It was likely either a temple or tomb, possibly both.

Photobucket

PhotobucketPetra has been a city of great religious significance both in ancient times and today. First, it has a number of connections with the Old Testament: the nearby Ain Mousa (Spring of Moses) is believed to be where Moses struck a rock with his staff to extract water and Aaron is said to have died in the Petra area and been buried on what is today the sacred site atop Jabal Haroun (Mount Aaron). Later, the city built by the Nabataeans was packed with tombs, temples, sanctuaries and altars to their gods. And in its last years, Petra was the home of several Byzantine churches.

Photobucket

PhotobucketThe name Petra, which means "rock" in Greek and Latin (derived from the word petrae), is actually a modern name for the place. This is because the city was carved from the friable sandstone cliffs of the area. The rocks take on a multitude of hues ranging from cream to orange, to red, and to dark brown. Layers of these rocks form whorls of colours which were incorporated into the Nabatean architecture.

Photobucket

PhotobucketThe Petra Church seems to have first been built over Nabataean and Roman remains around 450 AD. It may have been a major 5th- and 6th-century cathedral, which is intriguing given the other evidence of Petra’s decline after a 363 AD earthquake.

Photobucket

PhotobucketWhen first constructed around 450, the church had only one apse and an entrance porch. The Mosaic of the Seasons in the southern aisle is from this period. In 500-50 AD, the church was remodeled. Two side apses were installed and the two-story atrium built. The nave was paved and the chancel screens, a pulpit, and wall mosaics were installed, as were the mosaics of the northern aisle and the eastern end of the southern aisle.

Photobucket

PhotobucketThe Petra region has been the site of some of the most important cultural developments in the history of humankind. Early agriculture and metallurgy were practiced here, and links were forged in a trading network that stretched from East Asia to Europe. These events are remembered in sacred stories, and today the region is a part of what adherents to the Muslim, Jewish, and Christian religions consider their homeland. Limestone highlands, the purple area in the lower right, were forested areas before the trees were cut down. The center area (green and orange) is a region of canyon-cut sandstone steppes. Important sources of water originate in the bright band that forms the boundary between these two geological regions.

Photobucket

Photobucket Petra was recognised by Unesco as a World Heritage Site since 1985, and was described as "one of the most precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage." On 7 July 2007, it was voted as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.
PhotobucketPlace of the pre-Columbian Inca ruins, about 80 km northwest of Cuzco, in Peru.
Machu Picchu stands on an altitude of 2,350 meters, in the Andes Mountains. It's the principal tourist attraction in Peru.

Photobucket

PhotobucketMachu Picchu is 7000 feet above sea-level and consists of temples, giant walls, pathways, gardens, ramps and remnants of buildings and halls all built on the terraces made on mountain slopes. Over the centuries, the surrounding jungle grew to enshroud the site, and few knew of its existence.

Photobucket

PhotobucketRediscovery of Machu Picchu
On July 24, 1911, Machu Picchu was brought to the attention of the West by Hiram Bingham, an American historian then employed as a lecturer at Yale University. He was led there by locals who frequented the site. This explorer/archaeologist began the archaeological studies there and completed a survey of the area. Bingham coined the name "The Lost City of the Incas", which was the title of his first book. He never gave any credit to those who led him to Machu Picchu, mentioning only "local rumor" as his guide.

Photobucket

PhotobucketBingham had been searching for the city of Vitcos, the last Inca refuge and spot of resistance during the Spanish conquest of Peru. In 1911, after various years of previous trips and explorations around the zone, he was led to the citadel by Quechuans who were living in Machu Picchu in the original Inca infrastructure. Bingham made several more trips and conducted excavations on the site through 1915. He wrote a number of books and articles about the discovery of Machu Picchu.

Photobucket

PhotobucketFunctions and Legends
One of Machu Picchu's primary functions was that of astronomical observatory. The Intihuatana stone (meaning 'Hitching Post of the Sun') has been shown to be a precise indicator of the date of the two equinoxes and other significant celestial periods. The Intihuatana (also called the Saywa or Sukhanka stone) is designed to hitch the sun at the two equinoxes, not at the solstice (as is stated in some tourist literature and new-age books). At midday on March 21st and September 21st, the sun stands almost directly above the pillar, creating no shadow at all. At this precise moment the sun "sits with all his might upon the pillar" and is for a moment "tied" to the rock. At these periods, the Incas held ceremonies at the stone in which they "tied the sun" to halt its northward movement in the sky. There is also an Intihuatana alignment with the December solstice (the summer solstice of the southern hemisphere), when at sunset the sun sinks behind Pumasillo (the Puma's claw), the most sacred mountain of the western Vilcabamba range, but the shrine itself is primarily equinoctial.

Photobucket

PhotobucketIn 1983, Machu Picchu was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
On July 7th, 2007, Machu Picchu was voted as one of New Open World Corporation's New Seven Wonders of the World.

PhotobucketThe Taj Mahal is a mausoleum located in Agra, India, built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

Photobucket

PhotobucketThe Taj Mahal is considered the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements from Persian, Indian, and Islamic architectural styles. In 1983, the Taj Mahal became a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was cited as "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage."

Photobucket

PhotobucketIn 1631, Shah Jahan, emperor during the Mughal empire's period of greatest prosperity, was griefstricken when his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal, died during the birth of their fourteenth child, Gauhara Begum. In her dying breath, Mumtaz Mahal urged Shah Jahan to build a mausoleum for her, more beautiful than any the world had seen before. Shah Jahan granted his wife's wish, and construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1632, one year after her death. The court chronicles of Shah Jahan's grief illustrate the love story traditionally held as an inspiration for Taj Mahal. The principal mausoleum was completed in 1648 and the surrounding buildings and garden were finished five years later.

Photobucket

PhotobucketOn July 7th, 2007, Taj Mahal was voted as one of New Open World Corporation's New Seven Wonders of the World.
