Marilyn Monroe crypt auction fails again
Mon Nov 2, 4:34 PM
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A second attempt to sell a crypt on top of Marilyn Monroe's final resting place has failed, with not a single bid received for the burial spot in a celebrity-filled Los Angeles cemetery.
Widow Elsie Poncher is trying to sell her husband's crypt to pay off the mortgage on her Beverly Hills home. On selling the crypt, Poncher had planned to move her husband, who died in 1986, to an adjacent crypt intended for her.
But a $4.6 million bid submitted through online auctioneer eBay Inc in August fell through when the unidentified bidder pulled out.
A second auction on eBay with a reserve price of $500,000 also failed, with a notice on the online trading website saying it had closed with no bids on the marble mausoleum where Monroe was laid to rest in 1962.
The crypt is located at the Westwood Village Memorial Park cemetery, home to celebrities including Dean Martin, James Coburn, Roy Orbison, Truman Capote, Natalie Wood, Carl Wilson, Minnie Riperton and recent arrival Farrah Fawcett.
The space next to Monroe's vault was sold in 1992 to the publisher of Playboy magazine, Hugh Hefner, for $75,000.

Joe Jackson seeks allowance from son's estate
Fri Nov 6, 7:55 PM
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Joe Jackson, the elderly father of late pop star Michael Jackson, on Friday filed a court petition seeking an allowance from the singer's estate, saying his son had supported him for many years.
The legal filing in Los Angeles Superior Court, claims Michael Jackson's estate has earned an estimated $100 million since the singer's sudden death on June 25, and administrators expect it to earn $100 million more by the end of the year.
The filing claims Joe Jackson, who suffers from diabetes, was supported by Michael Jackson before his sudden death through payments made to the singer's mother and Joe Jackson's wife, Katherine Jackson, which were passed on to Joe Jackson.
Joe Jackson says his expenses exceed $20,000 per month, but his income from U.S. Social Security is a mere $1,700.
"Mr. Jackson's circumstances require a family allowance because he is 81 years old and Michael Jackson supported him in the same manner as his wife, Katherine Jackson, who was Michael's mother and who the court granted a family allowance on October 2," says the petition.
Michael Jackson, known as the King of Pop for his chart-topping record career, died of a drug overdose on June 25 at age 50 in Los Angeles only weeks before he was to have begun a series of comeback concerts in London.
Since then, a movie about the singer has taken in $144 million at global box offices. Sales of his old records have seen a resurgence, and this past week the soundtrack for "This Is It" topped U.S. record charts with sales of 373,000 copies.
In his will, Michael Jackson left his estate to a family trust benefiting his three children, mother and charities.
When the estate's administrators sought court approval for an allowance to help Katherine Jackson pay her expenses, they excluded Joe Jackson "without cause and for no apparent reason," according to the petition filed on Friday.
A declaration accompanying the filing states that in the early 2000s, Michael Jackson paid Katherine Jackson roughly $50,000 a month and that amount grew to $66,000 per month later this decade.
The declaration claims Michael Jackson knew some of that money was passed along to Joe Jackson to help him pay his expenses, and the suit says those payments have now stopped.

Seven dead in Texas military base shooting: report
36 minutes ago
WASHINGTON (AFP) - Armed gunmen Thursday killed seven people and wounded at least 12 others in a bloody rampage at Fort Hood military base in Texas, US officials and media said.
Both the Pentagon and local police confirmed to AFP that there had been a shooting, but could not give details on how many victims there were on the base in Killeen, in central Texas.
President Barack Obama had been informed of the shooting, a White House official said.
A suspect was in custody, Master Sergeant Tim Volkert at Fort Hood told AFP. "We're trying to confirm the exact numbers" of dead and wounded, he said.
But a Killeen police department spokeswoman warned there were still suspects at large. "There has been a shooting at Fort Hood and all the suspects are not in custody at this time," she told AFP.
"I know they have active shooters out there."
She would not give any more details, but local and national media reported that seven people had been killed and 12 others wounded.
MSNBC reported there were at least two shooters, with one in custody, adding there was speculation that there may be a third gunman.
One of the shooters at large was believed to have a high-powered sniper rifle, and was holed up in a building surrounded by SWAT teams, MSNBC said.
It was not immediately clear if it was an attack on the base, or whether the shootings were carried out by US soldiers.
Local congressman John Carter confirmed there had been a shooting at Fort Hood, the nation's largest US military base whose troops have seen extensive tours of duty in Iraq.
The gunfire had erupted ahead of a graduation ceremony in the soldier readiness center, Carter said, but could not confirm reports of injuries.
"I had a man on the scene, who is my regional director and former chaplin at Fort Hood, waiting to go to a graduation ceremony when a soldier came running up to him saying, "sir, don't go over there. They are -- somebody is shooting over there," Carter told on MSNBC.
"When the soldier ran by him, he saw the soldier didn't know it, but he was wounded. So, he went into the building and they stopped him, because he had been shot.
"He heard small arms and some rifle fire while he was there and that he thought they had one person that they had caught but there may be more, he didn't know. He understood there was more than one, that was all he said."
Fort Hood has been working to rehabilitate many soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome, Carter added.
A message on Fort Hood's website -- the headquarters of the Army 3rd Corps, the 4th Infantry Division and the 1st Cavalry Division -- said it was closed, but gave no further details. All those units have seen extensive duty in Iraq.
"Effective immediately. Fort Hood is closed. Organizations/units are instructed to execute a 100 percent accountability of all personnel. This is not a Drill. It is an Emergency Situation," the website.
Army personnel told a Fox news affiliate they were not sure if the victims were civilians or military personnel.
Schools in the area were also on lockdown, MSNBC said.
