Bay Unity Music Project (BUMP) Records is an urban music production and performance program for Bay Area youth located in Oakland, CA. BUMP grooms young artists through a rigorous year-long development process which includes extensive training in vocal technique, writing, composing, producing, as well as recording and performing original music. Artists also participate in intensive workshops with BUMP instructors as well as, professionals in the Bay Area music industry covering artist development, marketing, promotions and event management.
Founded in 2004, BUMP Records has released 5 critically acclaimed albums from its stable of artists ranging from Soul/R’n’B to Rap to Reggaeton. In its first 2 years the label released 4 compilations which included Where I’m At, The Future and the mixtape series True 2 Life: Volumes 1 & 2. In 2006, BUMP Records distributed its first individual group project with the release of Los Rakas’ Panabay Twist which helped legitimize the level of talent being produced in the program. The group garnered rave reviews for its fusion of Hip-Hop and Reggae(called Plena) and allowed the group to share the stage with acts like KRS-ONE, Goapele, Zion-I and Orishas.
Recently, BUMP has begun to focus on its individual artists and will be releasing EP’s through its new digital distribution deal with IODA(Independent Online Distribution Alliance) which is regarded as the future of music distribution. The young artists are coached on how to develop their project by defining their sound, concept, and visual elements of their image and identity. As the albums secure placement on iTunes, eMusic, Napster, MSN/Zune, Real/Rhapsody and Yahoo! Launch, BUMP artists will be able to expand their audiences beyond the Bay Area.
