Howdy Yall,

I decided to use the Gallery Lombardi list serve from my home office because March in Austin is full of good art and I love the Texas Biennial. This Friday 6-8pm is the opening event for the Texas Biennial 2009, with guest juror Michael Duncan. This is the 3rd version and it's got 73 artists in it from all over the state. http://texasbiennial.com has videos and tons of information on it.

The other thing I have to highlight is "New Brow" the best of underground artists show. This is a brief but welcome visit to Austin by California curator Justin Giarla and his friends. They've subleased the old Gallery Lombardi, so 602 W. 7th St. on March 19-21st, 11am-7pm will host great art. The shooting gallery presents an Artists Reception: Thursday March 19th, 7-11pm
http://gallerylombardi.com/ has flyer invites, and preview images by Shepard Fairey, Ron English ++

I tossed in a couple of other March events, no badges required. Thank you for supporting the visual arts in Austin.

Humble Pictures , The Shooting Gallery , The Alternative Café, are proud to present their film and artshow, “New Brow: The Rise of Underground Art”, to Austin, March 19th -21st. These events are supported by Red Bull, Pabst, Cafe Mundi, Juxtapoz , & The Unscene. For questions visit Shooting Gallery or call them at (415) 931-8035.

602 West Seventh St. Suite A will be busy night and day through out the week of March 15th, with a private press preview, opening reception, and film screening. Juxtapoz Magazine , the art publication holding the largest circulation in the US, will be sponsoring all events. With their sponsorship, the event comes full circle, as they have brought these underground artists to the attention of the general public. They’ve provided a voice for the Do-It-Yourself culture that only continues to take things to the next level. These parties will include, DJ’s, adult beverages, and killer time to be had by all.

Despite being turned away by the acceptance committee for SXSW, The Shooting Gallery remains committed to premiering “New Brow” to their Texas audience. To highlight the significance of the film’s place in history, internationally renowned art dealer, Justin Giarla, has put together a comprehensive body of work from artists interviewed in the film. The exhibit will run for a week, as a tribute to those who’ve made contributions to the Low Brow art movement. A progressive line up of works will be included, by emerging and largely significant Low Brow and Pop Surrealist artists.

The film, “New Brow”, exposes first hand accounts from artists, galleries, and collectors who initiated and maintained the New American Art Movement. Documenting the personal studios and makeshift gallery spaces where the movement began, it reveals the raw nature required for a new genre to be created. The film brings to attention influences often unrecognized or underrated, such as underground comix, Kustum Kulture, graffiti, tattoo, skate and surf, punk art and others amidst Californian sub-cultures. Among the movement’s history, “New Brow” puts things in perspective, to its major contributor and inspiration, Robert Williams.

DD Dagger is a musician by training, artist by trade, visionary by accident. Her new work is labor intensive and messy in full stereo sound. A nod to punk rock and a curtsey to post cyber-mash with herself as her own best critic and worst fan. This new work is a culmination of 15 years of color, shape, sound, and rhythm.

David Garza spiritual guitar hero and Austin icon displays his colorful watercolor portraits for the first time. These images honor our surroundings creating persona of imagination and vitality. Through these he expresses such emotion; conveying both love and disgust with layers of wash and line.

DD and David will show their art together at Cafe Mundi through March- with an opening celebration on March 6 commencing at 7:30.

Thanks so much!!!!

*MARCH 15*
*
/What's in the Box!/ : David Horvitz + Lukas Geronimas*

*Art Event: Sunday, March 15, 7-11 PM*

What's in the Box! Is a mutli-stage touring project, instigated by David Horvitz and Lukas Geronimas, in collaboration with The Black Hole Space and currator Terri C. Smith, and all those that participate in the Box Game. Project stages consist of: 1. An online web location providing event information and project updates 2. A series of box games played at pre-determined as well as impromptu locations throughout North America over the course of one month 3. A statistical analysis of game data, leading to a conclusive theory of what is inside the box 4. A long-term phase of constructing the answer to what's inside the box 5. An exhibition of the constructed answer along with documentary material and ephemera from the Box Game tour.

The Box Game is a portable event that allows a player to guess or 'vote' for what's inside the box (the process of guessing and voting at the same time is explained later). The Game's initial run will take place during the months of March and April 2009 at over a dozen pre-determined venues, and just as many impromptu locations.

I'm still recovering from the amazing trip I got to go on courtesy of Imeem and Gallery Lombardi. This experience started in the late afternoon over at Gallery Lombardi where Nate was gracious enough to let me paint with some of Texas's finest graffiti writers from all over. Rachel scored an excellent wall parallel to the gallery in the parking lot of the space. It was good to catch up and meet new Texans who are excellent in art and humble as all hell. Got to relax a little bit Friday night in preperation for all of the festivities that is to come on Saturday evening.

Saturday evening's festivities started a little later than Friday night (thank goodness because the sun was blazing all day!), complete with an outdoor DJ set up and the Pieced Together doors opening to early gallery goers right at 7pm sharp. I started my painting at 730pm right as the sun was setting so that it would be a little more comfortable for myself and the crowd that gathered around to watch. The painting was a lot of fun and I didn't want to disappoint so I did the best I could before it got real dark keeping in mind that there were so many amazing artists around me the whole time. The experience was surreal and all the people there were very supportive of what i was doing. They even clapped when I got done! That's definitely a first.

I can't thank the staff at Gallery Lombardi enough for their hospitality, Nate Nordstrom for taking care of everything I needed for the whole weekend and the people of Austin for making my trip one of the best so far this year!

Thank you Imeem.com and Gallery Lombardi!

Sincerely

Current mood: fabulous

Drumroll....

Rachel says:
"Won Kim is the winner, we think that he is aka Revise!! coming out of Chicago!... We had some very strong entries, big shout outs to Jaber, Video, Amo, and the all the others that made it fricken hard to choose. Evok your work is dope we are honored you entered -but Canadians were ineligible, we'll change that rule if we do this again. The mixtures of letters, characters and styles was a treat for our eyes. It's great to know the true aerosol heads are out there doing their thing. Won Kim has a great pallet rocking a bright look. We liked the variation in his lines, with the thick and thin details. The flourishes and details did not distract from the strong composition, the overall shape on the wall looked great. I think he's got the experience & style make a great piece live. His work is developed, his style is fresh and he really puts time into his pieces. Jaber you were #2 and we want you to come back to Austin real bad."

Sloke says:
"That is dope, it's really clean, he's got can control."
