everybody here
comes from somewhere
but they would just as soon forget
and disguise
at the summer camp where you volunteered
no one saw your face, no one saw your fear
if that apparition had just appeared
took you up and away from this place and sheer humiliation
of your teenage station
nobody cares no one remembers and nobody cares

yeah you cried and you cried
he’s alive he’s alive/a lie
ah, you cried and you cried and you cried and you cried

if you call out safe then i’ll stop right away
if the premise buckles and the ropes starts to shake
for the details mark
with the stories the same
you don’t have to explain
you don’t have to explain
humiliation
of your teenage station

yeah you cried and you cried
he’s alive he’s alive
ah, you cried and you cried and you cried
and you realized your fantasies are
dressed up in travesties
enjoy yourself with no regrets

everybody here comes from somewhere
if they would just as soon forget,
and disguise

yeah you cried and you cried
he’s alive he’s alive/a lie
yeah, you cried and you cried and you cried and you cried
(oh you cried and you cried)
(oh you cried and you cried)

now there’s nothing dark and there’s nothing weird
don’t be afraid i’ll hold you clear/near
from the sance where you first betrayed
an open heart on a darkened stage's celebration
of your teenage station

David and antonis are both idiots. This is great. What more can you expect from a band that has now put out 14 studio albums? This is a good as it gets. The rest has been done before.

I slightly - SLIGHTLY - agree with antonis that this isn't the best first single for REM to release at this point in their carreer. Remember when "What's the Frequency Kenneth?" burst onto radio and announced that REM was going to rock? With what they've been through and with what they've produced recently, I'd rather they release something stronger that we could all get behind.
I've heard that this song was not the big favorite at the Dublin live sessions. Maybe the rest of the album will overtake this and bring REM back to their glory days - or something like it.
I admire Michael Stipe so incredibly much and I'd like to see them re-stake some turf.

This is the worst "first single" of the band, period. I mean you've got a new producer, your worst album behind (Around The Sun) and you come back with...this!? This could be a decent b-side but then again even "Revolution" beats it. It's a good thing that Mike is back, but it's not enough. Utterly disappointed :(

Great track; wonderful to hear Michael and Mike singing that chorus and to hear Peter's jangly guitar again!!! I think we might finally have a proper follow up to 'New Adventures'...And who is this clown calling R.E.M. a 'corporate band'? I dont see their songs selling Cars (band of horses, dylan or led zep?) or shipping business products ( postal service?) R.E.M. still has much if not more so called integrity than just about superstar or 'indie' act today.

so so sweet to hear REM bring even more fresh sound to our hears. just can't help keep listening to this track until the ablum comes out hopefully they may tour by the end of the year. trully a great band that age does not effect their sound. happy days

When a band is called "corporate" that just means they were successful and had the audacity to have more than one hit album in a row or because radio embraced them. It does not, at least in REM's case, reflect a lowering of standards or selling out. No REM songs in ads, by the way. Can you say that about "indie" darlings like Snow Patrol or Postal Service? REM have struggled for the last couple albums, and they admit that they weren't communicating as well as they should. But a bad REM album is usually better and more interesting than a good effort by the countless REM influenced young bands out there.
This song is a good one. Not their best, but a promising return to form. I'm eager to hear the whole thing. I've followed REM this far, so I am not going to stop now.

This is just fantastic, the best news to come from REM in years, yes the live cd/dvd was great and yet we NEEDED a new studio release!! Thank You!!

Really great I think. Sounds fresh to me, it will never be a classic like losing my religion or something, but I think it turns out to be a crowd favorite at their live shows, just like Imitation of Life turned out to be.

2nd to the Bill Berry comment. But it is a wondrous thing to hear guitar riffs in an REM song again. I'm VERY hopeful for the new record!
