Description
after 4 sets of turntables, 10000+ records, 500+ parties, a college radio show, multiple music phases, and 8453 cans of beer --- i now find myself in music sales by day and dj/promotor by night... as a member of the massive selector crew, i'm busy organizing and promoting quality events for the good people of san francisco. i've pretty much played in every joint in the city along side local san francisco favorites like romanowski, j-boogie, dj zeph, sake-one and the triple threat dj's (vinroc, apollo, shortkut). i've even been lucky enough to share the stage with some of my heroes - dj jazzy jeff, dj swamp, melo-d and j-rocc, neil armstrong, breakestra, dj spinna, dj premier, haul & mason, king britt, ?uestlove, and bobbito, gilles peterson and more... if you ever catch me on the decks, you'll never hear the same thing twice -- from hip-hop, rock, funk, soul, disco, broken beat, latin, house, reggae, dub, 80's, i dig all styles and smiles!

PROOF’S TOP 5 1. BUGZ IN THE ATTIC “Don’t Stop The Music” (KV5 Mix) – downtempo re-ish of BITA’s “Don’t Stop The Music.” press play... rewind. and press play again. 2. SUGARLOAF GANGSTERS “Avant Le Jazz” –a new joint from sugarloaf gangsters (aka spiritual south) off the oh-so-solid GAMM label… those funky Swedes know how to pick ‘em. check out this bossa infused heater sure to warm up your cold turkey after thanksgiving (that was lame.) on the real, checked out spiritual south at boca last month and threw down one of the dopest sets i’ve heard in awhile… too bad there were only 4 people including the bartender there to hear it. 3. SYGAIRE “Duex Mille Duex” – new dancefloor burner from sonar kollektiv… afro-heat for your wanabe afro-feet. 4. CHARMAINE BURNETTE “(Am I The) Same Girl” – dusty springfield’s 60’s classic gets a rub-a-dub remake by charmaine burnette, taken off the PARTY KELLER 2 compilation by international beat digger and german music connoisseur florian keller (see compost records). 5. JAY-Z “Show Me What You Got” – i’m sorry but just blaze kills it on the new hova joint… sampling lafayette afro rock band’s “darkest light," p.e.’s “show em what you got” AND shaft’s “shaft in africa” like a champ! he just hit me in a soft spot… 2 thumbs up. *CLASSIC PICK* RISCO CONNECTION “Ain’t No Stopping Us Now” – a disco remake of McFadden and Whitehead's commercial hit that in my opinion, is way better than the original… has that ny loft party feel a la 1978 with a reggae twist. hot.

ABOUT MAD MATS (raw fusion)
With over 50 records released, Raw Fusion Recordings founder and CEO, "Mad" Mats Karlsson continues to rule the Swedish underground club music scene. Artists such as Freddie Cruger aka Red Astaire (SWE) Spiritual South (UK), Simbad (UK/FR), Future Beat Investigators (FI) and Povo (DK), keep granting the label life as Raw Fusion releases some of the greatest tunes to come out the studios of these artists.

The brainchild of Raw Fusion, Mad Mats, started his path into the future by the way of DJ'ing after leaving his successful days of break dancing behind (Swedish champ 1985!). Over years Mats became one of the most well known DJ's to come out of Sweden, touring the world with his diverse musical selection. After many years of continuously discovering new sounds and connecting with fresh inspirations, Raw Fusion was born as the start of a new era.

The Raw Fusion trademark started out as a monthly club night founded by Mats in boogie down Stockholm back in 1996. The premier night was an instant hit and the Raw Fusion Club still to this day attracts a large dedicated audience and has reached cult status within the Stockholm club scene. Since 2002 the musical vision of Mats has grown into a prosperous recording label, dedicated to spreading the future of black dance music across the globe. And in 2003 Mad Mats created a sub label to Raw Fusion Recordings. It was called Jugglin' Records (named after the Ragga Twins underground hit tune with the same name!) and was intended to have a much more urban sound than the mother label had had so far. After only 10 releases, the label was taken out of commission and was rejoined with Raw Fusion Recordings, which now is limitless to genre and musical styles.

The musical roots of Raw Fusion Recordings rest on a steady foundation based on black music of the underground club scene. Genres like soulful house, cutting edge hip-hop, electronic funk, raw street-soul, dance floor jazz, rough latin and deep Detroit techno boogie are represented. Since day one the catalogue has consisted of various artists who all represent a raw, innovative, urban, street feel, which signifies the music that we love, live and breathe.

"In everything we do, quality and musical integrity have since day one been our main goal. We're a music company, not a corporation!" - more about MAD MATS & RAW FUSION at rawfusionrec.com and myspace.com/rawfusionjugglin

ABOUT FREDDIE KRUGER aka RED ASTAIRE (g.a.m.m.)
Aspects of old-school hip hop, b-boy grooves, dirty funk, reggae, electro-soul, Latin and disco. Already a firm favourite with the likes of Jazzy Jeff, Norman Jay, Bobbito, Gilles Peterson and Erykah Badu, Freddie Cruger has been bangin’ out platters of black gold from his Stockholm studios since the early 90s.

Freddie first encountered hip hop in the 80’s when his brother was collecting vinal hip hop and his worked in an import record shop in Stockholm. This lead him to buy loads of records and in turn his decks, drum machine and then a few years later a sampler.

Forever switching between his Freddie Cruger and Red Astaire alter egos, a barrage of top quality 12s have made both names a permanent fixture in DJ boxes across the globe.

In 2003 Red Astaire’s ‘Follow Me’ single on the GAMM imprint achieved widespread notoriety. A hook-laden, crowd-pleasing mash-up built around the a-cappella of a well-known soul tune, it went down a treat with DJs, tastemakers and partygoers the world over. - more about FREDDIE KRUGER aka RED ASTAIRE at myspace.com/redastaire

ABOUT DJ NEIL ARMSTRONG
A battle turntablist for the last decade or so, DJ Neil Armstrong found his niche making mixtapes featuring ’80s synth pop, rock, underground hip-hop and other treasures from the crate. He dubbed it his (All Out King) Series, a reference to a line from the pivotal graffiti movie “Style Wars“: “You gotta do everything: If you specialize in just one thing, you can’t call yourself an all-out-king!” Armstrong is the official DJ for the Mary J. Blige and Jay-Z Heart of the City Tour, a major coup, to be sure. So how did he get there? Story goes that one of Armstrong’s tapes fell into the hands of a Roc-A-Fella Records employee and it went up the chain to Jigga man himself, who used it as inspiration to formulate the highs and lows of his classic “Black Album." - LA Times article

PROOF'S SPRING '08 PICKS
maaaan, it's been a minute since i dropped some music picks but there's so much good music out there right now, that it's time to share... listen to my new imeem playlist to check out the tracks i'm feelin at the moment...

1. Carlos Nino & Miguel Atwood-Ferguson "Find A Way" LA musician Carlos Nino is back with another orchestration of a classic J. Dilla track - this time A Tribe Called Quest's "Find A Way". Nino and Atwood-Ferguson lead a band of musicians into a cinematic rendition of the classic Dilla produced track. Check the build up around the 3 minute mark... whoooo. big ups to andrew lojero for sharing this track, and daps to hakobo for telling me to listen to it, lol.
2. Erykah Badu "Honey (Moody Boyz Remix)" Ms. Badu's latest album is just the shit. everytime i hear Master/Teacher into The Hump into Telephone, it just hits me right THURRR... but check out this version of "Honey" that gets a dub step rub down by the UK's moody boyz... oh so sweet.
3. Green Tea "Sunshowers (Green Tea Remix)" Green Tea turns this mellow favorite into a bonifide dancefloor burner! complete with extended breaks for the dancers, and those sweet vocals lay perfectly over this uptempo track... this joint is gonna be heating dancefloors all summer long!
4. Yosaku "Ain't It Funky" the ubiquitous Yosaku takes on the difficult task of remixing one of James Brown's biggest hits, and delivers! this dudes ability to update a hard funk anthem into a now-sound heater is pretty mind blowing... this joint is gonna be featured on GAMM's upcoming "Doin James" James Brown tribute compilation. Ain't It Funky never sounded so FONKY.
5. Jackson Conti "Sao Paulo Nights" did you know madlib loves brazil? so much so that he linked up with the drummer Mamao of legendary brazilian outfit Azymuth to form Jackson Conti. check out this beautiful track off their latest album Sujinho...
6. Shawty Lo "They Know (Million $ Mano Remix)" bmore madness. bangin. shout out to jesse and the dub frequency crew for lacing me with this joint... oh, and check out their VIDEO too while you're at it.
7. Outkast "Royal Flush feat Raekwon" the 2 dope boys are back and taking it back to the roots as they team up with Reakwon on this track that's reminiscent of their early work... this is some grimy southernplayalistic type ish!
8. Chez Damier "In & Out (Daz-I-Kue Remix)" lovin Daz's future boogie version of this crowd pleaser... can somebody say 80's throwback?
9. Karizma aka Kaytronic "33rd Street Anthem" techy new joint from Karizma that just smacks you in the face like he was your daddy... you know you like it.
10. Loose Ends "Hanging On A String" speaking of throwbacks, here's an r&b classic from 1984... and still sounds so fresh and so clean, peep the VIDEO and take some fashion tips, lol.

"NIGHT SHIFT" compiled and mixed by RENMIN and PROOF
The sounds that came out of the late 70's and early 80's were the building blocks of hip-hop, electro, and house as we know it... so we had to pay homage to this forgotten era in dance music! "Night Shift" is nonstop mix of lost 80's R&B gems, electro-funk, and UK boogie flavor, recorded from the original vinyl pressings, and took over a year to compile. If you dig Prince, SOS Band, Mary Jane Girls, Cameo, Midnight Star, Kahif, or Patrice Rushen... or if heavy synth laden tracks with infectious basslines make you bug out, you NEED a copy of "Night Shift". Pick up your Limited Edition CD (only 100 made!) this Saturday at Madrone Lounge or reserve your copy now at soulnthehole@gmail.com

Ungrammar and Pacific Standard Time invite you to join us in putting life back into the night, with a live soul series dedicated to the NEW. We humbly present music with meaning, from the artists who we beleive carry the torch for this movement out of the dark ages. Help us take it there....

know the ledge...

DJ SPINNA (wonderwax, beyond real)
Turning heads throughout the industry, globetrotting selecta, DJ Spinna is known for his ability to mix genres from hip-hop, house, funk, soul, and disco seamlessly, while turning the party out. His successes have included holding down residency at legendary New York house music venue the Shelter, annually rocking massive Winter Music Conference crowds in Miami, producing music with hip-hop groups Jigamastas and Polyrhythm Addicts, and getting respect in the nujazz-broken beat realm for albums like 2006's Intergalactic Soul, on Wonderwax. Production credits are like a who's who in music... from hip-hop legends Brand Nubian, Masta Ace and Guru (Gangstarr), De La Soul (“Stakes is High”) Das EFX and the Jungle Brothers... to up-and-coming soul artists' J Dilla bred Platinum Pied Pipers and Bay Area songstress Goapele as with the well respected Les Nubian... to icons like George Michael, Mary J. Blige, Motown Records (for his brilliant Michael Jackson homage to “We’re Almost There”), Donald Byrd, Eddie Kendricks, Betty Carter, Roy Ayers and Al Jarreau.

But it wasn't until DJ Spinna's monumental version of Shawn Escoffery’s “Days Like This” that catapulted Spinna into his now stately, touted presence in the dance music scene. Soon after, Spinna’s own label, Wonderwax was born. A home for his soulful dance classics, the imprint came to fruition in 2003, and has seen memorable releases from contemporaries such as Rich Medina, Lady Alma, Blaze, The Free Radikalz and Selan. Spinna’s collaborated on stage alongside contemporary luminaries like Gilles Peterson, Jazzanova, Joe Claussell, Bugz In The Attic, Osunlade, Jazzy Jeff, Kenny Dope, Keb Darge, DJ Scratch (EPMD), DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist. Its true that there are other like-minded DJ/Producers in the world comparable to DJ Spinna, but for the most part, they choose a genre and master it. Ask them to flip another variety with the same intense knowledge and sleek-savvy and you’ll be hard pressed to find someone that’ll do it to like DJ Spinna.

DJ LADY SHA (los angeles)
A selectress, musician, and vocalist, Lady Sha continuously returns home to LA a citizen of the world as reflected in her eclectic DJ sets. Gracing stages both nationally and internationally, DJ Lady Sha is one of the nation's top female DJ's. Born in Iran and trained in turntablism while living in California's Bay Area and in LA, Shaden was exposed to a wide range of music from an early age. Spinning heated hip hop sets fused with reggae/dancehall, soul, middle eastern, and global sounds, she has moved dancefloors worldwide. One of the few female DJ's rocking parties in Jamaica yearly and the first female DJ to spin live on South African radio airwaves (2004 southern Africa tour), Lady Sha engraves her signature in the music and nightlife industries universally. Currently, Lady Sha innovates the nightlife experience of LA through her special events firm, Lioness Entertainment, while also touring SF/NY/Miami/Vegas and cities around the globe. www.myspace.com/djladysha

PROOF (massive selector)
Quiet as kept, San Francisco's PROOF is one of the West Coast's elite, throwing game-changing events with his Massive Selector brethren and spinning all over the place with the hottest selections. Heavily influenced by classic funk, deep soul, hip-hop, and house, PROOF's sound definitely cater to the dancers. His mix cd's, known for their global flavor and crossing genres seamlessly, have created quite a buzz with music lovers. PROOF's latest release, "BROWN SOUNDS" is an "eclectic mix of future beats, latin treats, and afro heat for the discerned dance floor" and is available now at turntablelab.com. You can catch PROOF at his monthly FUTURECLASSIC every first friday at Poleng Lounge in San Francisco.

JAYVI VELASCO (meow ent, remedy sf)
"To me hes more then a DJ, Jayvi knows exactly what we(dancers) want!! Setting the energy, feeding the vibe. If youre blessed enough to step into a room that hes rocking, you'll see it, you'll feel it. House is a spiritual connection and this brotha is responsible for many of my sweat filled nights. When I step into his vibe I AM ALIVE AND FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! Thank you brotha. Thank you." - Odie (Flo-ology Dance Collective)

HAKOBO & TOKYO COMPONENT (theculprits)
To say that San Francisco's theCulprits are the underground's poster children for hot international music would be an understatement. Tokyo Component, Hakobo and Eug, a.k.a. The Culprits, have been biding their time and paying their dues by bringing out acts such as Jazzanova, Gilles Peterson, Little Louie Vega, Kenny Dope and Kyoto Jazz Massive. Those in "the know" are aware that these names are nothing to scoff at. Those without soul definitely need not apply. The Culprits hit it hard on all accounts by bringing the best in multiple genres from funk, soul, jazz, hip hop, house to broken beat. With such refined tastes in music, one might think that these guys come from places like Canada, Japan or Mexico. Well, actually, they do, and lucky for us Bay Area natives, they've got their hands deep into San Francisco's nightlife and were ranked by 7x7 Magazine as having one of the hottest Friday nights in the city this year.

FUTURECLASSIC is a monthly dedicated to bridging the gap between future flavors and classic cuts every FIRST FRIDAY at poleng lounge in san francsico. expect to hear funk, soul, disco, boogie, jazz, hip-hop, house, global rhythms and beyond from world class dj's and artists every month!
