Whether it's broken-beat, folk, nu-jazz, house, or singer/songwriter based music, Sonar Kollektiv set the bar high for quality from the start and never looked back. As one of the DJs from the Jazzanova crew, Alex returns to SF with his superb mix of soulful deep house, drum & bass, boogie, hip-hop, latin and soul! Jazzanova is one of the foremost proponents of the nu-jazz and house styles of music, gaining recognition as innovative remixers for a vast number of acts including Ian Pooley, Incognito, 4 Hero, Masters at Work.
RICH MEDINA Whether it's rocking at his residency at New York's chic APT nightclub, or makin bodies move at his famous JUMP N FUNK parties, the impeccable Rich Medina is an accomplished Producer, DJ, Poet, and Personality on the underground music scene, worldwide. Connecting the dots between Hip Hop, Jazz, House, Spoken Word, Afro Beat and Bass Heavy Future Soul, Rich Medina, renaissance man, articulate performer and a down and dirty DJ who can go head to head with the best, is an artist who will transform the average experience of any club or venue and give his audience a night of music and words to remember.
APOLLO As a member of Triple Threat DJs, which includes Shortkut and Vin Roc, DJ Apollo is known for his "Many Styles", whether it be his technique or musical selection. DJ Apollo began DJing in 1983. He was an Original Member and Co-founder of the Invisbl Skratch Piklz. He was also the DJ of Buckshot LeFonque f/jazz legend Branford Marsalis and toured worldwide with the group. He has appeared w/Buckshot LeFonque on Jay Leno, David Lettermen, Conan O'Brien, Soul Train. An interesting fact about Apollo is that he invented the art of band turntablism with Mix Master Mike in 1989 with their Peter Piper routine. Among the many titles and awards, Apollo has amassed are the 1992 DMC US Championship, 1992 DMC World Championship, and 1993 Bay Guardian Goldies award.
DJ NEIL ARMSTRONG Neil Armstrong is a 10-year veteran of the turntablist scene, and a mainstay in the New York hip-hop underground. He has shared the stage with acclaimed artists across the hip-hop spectrum - from De La Soul, The Roots, Company Flow and Biz Markie, to LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes and Wyclef Jean. Besides the "normal" DJ duties of party rocking and battling, Neil's genre bending mixtapes have brought him notoriety for smoothness and creativity in the subgenre of Hip Hop known as the "Mixtape" culture. The level of quality and originality shown on his projects have made everyone take notice. He made Rolling Stones "Top 10" Mixtape DJ's of 2005 list, was recognized by Vibe Magazine as one of the next DJ's "on deck" to watch out for, had his cd's featured on Mtv.com's Holiday Essentials Feature, and gained an honorable mention in Mixunit.com's Power 30 List of "The most influential players in the mixtape game 2005".
VINROC Upsetting battle DJs throughout the world for the supreme title of 1997 and 1998 ITF World Champion, New Jersey raised Vinroc remains rooted in his strong family values and passion for music. He has not forgotten his love of hip-hop and the art form known to mainstream society as "DJing" or turntablism to an eclectic few. DJ Vinroc (aka Vincent Punsalan) is a proud member of the DJ battle crew known as 5th Platoon (New Jersey). Vinroc first began DJing in 1987 at the early age of ten. He began moving on to local battles in New York where he was first introduced to his future crew as well as other battle DJ's such as the X-ecutioners (Loud Records). Vinroc has been featured and seen worldwide in magazines such as Rolling Stone, The Source, Rap Pages, URB, Subculture Magazine, XXL, The San Francisco Weekly and numerous publications throughout the world. Touring and projects have taken him throughout the United States and overseas to such cultural enclaves as New York, Los Angeles, Texas, San Francisco, Canada, London, and Amsterdam.
DJ PLATURN Standing 6’ 5” DJ Platurn is not only the Bay Area’s tallest scratch DJ but also one of it’s top crate diggers/music aficionados. Known to most for his membership of the infamous Oakland Faders (along with DJ Spair) DJ Platurn wasn’t born in the East Bay, or even in the USA, but in Iceland where he grew up surrounded by records (his dad was a bigtime DJ there). Besides having been voted Oakland's best DJ by the East Bay Express and winning Scions’ Free Up Your Mix competition along with fellow Oakland Fader DJ Spair, Platurn has devastated crowds from coast to coast and internationally. In doing so, he's shared the stage with folks like Z-Trip, Krs-One, Mixmaster Mike, The Beat Junkies, DJ Premier, Slick Rick, Maseo(De La Soul), ZionI, Jazzy Jay, Quest-Love(The Roots), M.F. Doom, A-Trak, Afrika Bambaata, Pete Rock, and a whole bunch more. Not too bad for that tall skinny white boy from Iceland.
KING MOST When his older brother started deejaying in the early 90's it wasn't too long until King Most himself started mixing and cutting records. Since then he's progressed from the bedroom to sharing the stage with a diverse range of guests that include The Clipse,SA-RA Creative Partners ,Steve Aoki ,DJ Spinna, Quantic, Shepherd Fairey and many more. Aside from bridging genres and people from the Bay Area to Japan to Europe he's been able to produce tracks for Aloe Blacc (Stonesthrow/Emanon), Ladybug Mecca (Digable Planets),Rahshan of Crown City, and continually release mix-cd's. All this while he co-manages the left coast's PLUG Label with main partner in crime, Kero One.
THE CULPRITS To say that San Francisco's theCulprits are the underground's poster children for hot international music would be an understatement. Tokyo Component, Hakobo and Eug, a.k.a. The Culprits, have been biding their time and paying their dues by bringing out acts such as Jazzanova, Gilles Peterson, Little Louie Vega, Kenny Dope and Kyoto Jazz Massive. Those in "the know" are aware that these names are nothing to scoff at. Those without soul definitely need not apply. The Culprits hit it hard on all accounts by bringing the best in multiple genres from funk, soul, jazz, hip hop, house to broken beat. With such refined tastes in music, one might think that these guys come from places like Canada, Japan or Mexico. Well, actually, they do, and lucky for us Bay Area natives, they've got their hands deep into San Francisco's nightlife and were ranked by 7x7 Magazine as having one of the hottest Friday nights in the city this year.
PROOF Quiet as kept, San Francisco's PROOF is one of the West Coast's elite, throwing game-changing events with his Massive Selector brethren and spinning all over the place with the hottest selections. Heavily influenced by classic funk, deep soul, hip-hop, and house, PROOF's sound definitely cater to the dancers. His mix cd's, known for their global flavor and crossing genres seamlessly, have created quite a buzz with music lovers. PROOF's latest release, "BROWN SOUNDS" is an "eclectic mix of future beats, latin treats, and afro heat for the discerned dance floor" and is available now at turntablelab.com. You can catch PROOF at his monthly FUTURECLASSIC every first friday at Poleng Lounge in San Francisco.
ROLAND APPEL OF TRUBY TRIO DJ and Producer Roland Appel is the talk of the town at the moment thanks to his new track "Dark Soldier". Everyone is playing it: DJ Hell, Ame, Dixon, Gilles Peterson and yes Pete Tong. Roland Appel has a solid profile as a DJ. Living in Paris the last years besides playing quite quite a few fashion events he has been touring the world with his projects Fauna Flash, Voom:Voom and Trüby Trio playing such events and clubs such as: fabric London, Cielo/apt in NYC, Yellow Tokyo, Weekend Berlin, Roskilde festival, Sonne Mond Sterne, Big Chill, Jazzfest Montreux, etc.
TEMPLE NIGHTCLUB Oh nightlife seekers of little faith; Temple aims to make you part of its worshipping congregation. Dècor progresses from shadowy catacombs full of Southeast Asian antiquities [dating back as far as the 11th Century] to 21st Century walls of light and digital paintings. The main floor, featuring a palatial restaurant and 600-year-old Jain temple, joins the club following dinner service. Add entertainment acts from around the world and Temple looks ready to perform mass conversions. Donation trays will not be passed around, but memberships are available.
