Los Angeles residents Roll The Tanks fight dirty. Gloves off, they come out swinging with their Indie Label debut LP Suffer City. Originally from Lowell, Massachusetts, Roll The Tanks illustrates the hardships of small-town boredom, relationships, rebellion and good-old fashioned angst in this full-length album.
The quartet is reminiscent of The Clash, The Pixies and their contemporaries Against Me! Start to finish this record demands your attention with crunchy riffs and melodic solos that remind you of why Rock and Roll won your heart over.
Members consist of front man and rhythm guitarist Danny Carney, lead guitarist Scott Stephens, bassist Mike Wakeham and drummer Phil Trudel. The four friends found each other in the summer of 2003 on a make-shift basketball court in Phil's driveway, and they've been a team ever since.
The band's name originated from the T-Rex album entitled "Tanx" and eventually evolved into the name they proudly display on their bass drum.
Certain shows that inspired the Bostonians to play music were that of Green Day's 1995 Insomniac tour and local punk shows. "Bands like The Pinkerton Thugs, The Dropkick Murphy's, The Showcase Showdown, and The Shods coming out of the Boston area were our biggest influences" said Wakeham.
As far as the songwriting, Roll The Tanks implement their own unique process.
"Scott or myself writes a skeletal song that consists of a verse, chorus and some lyric ideas," said Carney. "Then the four of us get together and hash it out. We often tend to let songs exist in a premature state. Lyrics are rarely completed by the time we record because they're always changing as the song grows."
Carney added that the majority of their lyrics might resonate with listeners in different ways.
"Our first DIY effort, Dance With That Isn't Dead Yet , the lyrics didn't make a ton of sense, not to say they were garbage, but just to say that they were more poetic or open to interpretation," he said. "With Suffer City we've moved towards story-driven lyrics and making statements."
Tracks such as "Police Me", "Coldest Non Believer", and "Blood Flow" hemorrhage with emotion and shout along choruses that will leave you incessantly banging your steering wheel without a care in the world.
Suffer City is littered with brutal honesty and sarcasm that is sure to inspire you to get back into the ring, and Roll The Tanks are in your corner.
