blog post Skip Heller -The Long Way Home OUT MONDAY 11/30!!
Posted in release on Nov 25, 2009 at 6:18 PM
Current Mood: awesome

Ropeadope Alumni Skip Heller is back again for another release with his always talented, impressive trio. The trio’s music this time around follows a mixture of country and rock, a nice reminder to the simplicity, but beauty that can exist within music. Calling the music simple is not to downplay Skip Heller and company’s musicianship, but a raw, not heavily produced masterpiece. One that allows the listener to be captured into a calming, yet focused listening state. Skip Heller’s ability to craft songs that make one wish for more and yet be satisfied with the creation of “The Long Way Home”. In fact, the idea of even classifying this album is too hard to do, it just doesn’t quite fit into any specific genre, strictly speaking, this probably shouldn't be filed under "jazz", but Skip has been called the "greatest living jazz guitarist in America (Jazz times), so it probably will, but it really shouldn't. Skip’s famous saying "artistry always defies explanation" fits this album in ways other words couldn’t. How can the album be explained correctly? The complicated answer ultimately comes to it can’t. One must just sit and listen and try not to over think this album. “Skip Heller is a bad-ass guitar player, but to me, calling Skip a guitar player, or musician is limiting. He is an artist like Pollack or Picasso”

blog post NEW GREG HESTER RELEASE…HUSTLERS, KILLERS, AND THIEVES OUT NOW!!
Posted in music on Nov 25, 2009 at 4:44 PM
Current Mood: excited

Take a drive with Greg Hester through HIS world – a place where booze comes in a paper bag and everyone has a nickname. A world of colorful characters who dance the circus dance of life each day while the rest of us make our way from the city out to our safe suburban homes. As we ignore their gaze, they peer at us in our fancy little boxes and wonder who we are – hustlers, killers, or thieves. Because they know the score, and they’re not trading the joy and the rhythm for a shiny and safe life.

"Hustlers, Killers & Thieves", features Ivan Neville & The James Brown Band including Fred Wesley, Fred Thomas, Emcee Danny Ray & Legendary Guitarist Keith Jenkins. HKT was produced & recorded in Nashville by Eric McConnell ( Loretta Lynn, Todd Snider ).

blog post Clay Ross... A Great Review!

"Ross is something of a polymath, handling guitar, vocals and lyrics as well as the Brazilian cavaquinho guitar and kashakas percussion. His vision for this project is unique; with a mix of originals and covers that melds many musical traditions under one big, open umbrella. He's also assembled a killer band, including appearances from guests including master Brazilian percussionists Cyro Baptista and Ze Mauricio."

The Spinning Leaves are a glowing experience, steeped in traditional
American music, sweetened with psychedelic folk and a garnish of New
Weird America. LOVE is a winding tapestry that envelopes the listener,
taking you on a journey through a world that at first glance could have
been, but by record’s end truly can be. Our guides are Michael Baker, whose
Kentucky heritage is not only evident but absolutely authentic - and Barbara
Geddes - a Pennsylvania native whose voice is simultaneously suggestive
and comforting.

Michael and Barbara present their vision of Love (with a capital L) for all the
world to hear. LOVE presents powerfully real, insightful landscapes of people,
dreams, and emotions. Swirling choirs of harmonies, bent harmonica,
lazy horn sections, sitar and oud, wooden pump organ, and children’s voices,
all perfectly placed.

‘We met on Barbara’s birthday in October of 2006 and started singing the next
day. We believe in community and the connections that can form when people
look each other in the eyes. There are more than fifty people from the Philly
music scene who have contributed to LOVE. We support with our music local
farms and farmers, and treasure the complex connections between the earth
and humans.’

‘How do you explain "loose but tight" or " melodically funky" ? You don't---you
just point to The Spinning Leaves, a fresh new band from Philly that I find
indescribably delicious.’

Gene Shay / WXPN

‘The Spinning Leaves are a fantastically talented duo that play acoustic music
with flair and warmth and vibrancy. This ain’t your old folk. It’s new folk
steeped in tradition for the modern world’

A musical group that believes in stretching the well known into the unknown. While finding highly innovative ways of creating sound, they give incessant nods to their predecessors. Their music is truly a reflection of their composite musical backgrounds. They leave no rock unturned, bringing their audiences on a journey that spans decades, genres, cultures, and disciplines. Their unique way of blending hip-hop, rock, improv, electronica, drum-n-bass, jazz, and spoken word is infectious and pleases every crowd they are in front of...
