No lie... I'm work first and fun later. There's a quest that's in front of me and I'm trying grasp it. So there's no telling how long I'll be running, but I know that I love I what I do. No sleep, no die!!!
In my mind my now, I understand that success is a glowing feeling that come's from working hard, paying due's and people actually respecting you because they know that your word counts for something. For me it's not a money in the bank type thing or how flashy can I be, but a confidence type thing that others feel off you.
In the present, I work in the music industry. My background in music is extensive but rather short. My first internship was at HOT97 working under the Director of Music Advertising in 2001. Later on during the internship, I was put on payroll and was doing street team for CD101.9, KissFM and HOT97. I later left to become a personal assistant for Darrin Henson of Soul Food. It was with Darrin that I broke out and initially learned that my fate would soon lead to publicity because even though I was coined the assistant, the things I did where publicity driven. I got interviews on him with Lenny Green of KissFM, WPGC in DC and XM radio to promote his calendar. I also arranged his appearance at the Hue-Man Bookstore in Harlem for his calendar signing.
Eventually Darrin and I would go separate ways. I would do other internships and ventures to increase my strengths as a good worker at such places like Excite Media as a product placement intern and The Brooklyn Academy of Music just to name a few. In 2006 I worked for a Brooklyn based Music PR firm as a music publicist with alternative acts like Dashboard Confessional and MC Lars. In my artist folder... I secured interviews, previews and etc. for alternative bands like: Nightmare Of You, DJ Hyper, Digweed and The Lordz.
While I was doing my own independent PR, I past clients in such publications and online sites like Allhiphop.com, Black Beat Magazine, Rolling Out Weekly, Hip-Hop Connection, Allaboutjazz.com, XXL, The Cipha Sounds Effect on Shade 45/Sirius Satellite Radio and many others.
Not only to doing PR, I pen thoughts to paper contributing for Hiphopruckus.com, AmalgamDigital.com, Starpulse.com, GhettoblasterMagazine.com and Allhiphop.com. I've interviewed person's like Daddy Yankee, Vanessa Simmons, Dame Grease, Buffie the Body, RZA, NYOIL and many others. Did reviews on albums by Fat Joe, Kidz In The Hall, Buckshot & 9th Wonder, Mighty Joseph and more.
In the mean time to writing, I took up the consulting The Wonder Years on HipHop Nation/Sirius Satellite Radio and assist in bringing guests on other shows when possible. Past guest on the show include Dame Grease, The Lordz, Bryan-Michael Cox, Kwame, Kurious Jorge...
Throughout this overall process, I was coined The Beast by by the wife of one of the co-owner's of B-Sharp Apparel. She called me that because of my results driven success and hardwork that I had put in while working with them as my client. I couldn't dispute her name calling because if she could see that I put in work, then damn... that's a compliment. So the moniker stuck and I'm riding with it because it keep's me motivated. You can only be a beast if about your shit!
