blog post The Bangles - Manic Monday
Posted in Records on Sep 30, 2005 at 3:41 PM

My favourite record by the Bangles, even though 'Walk Like An Egyptian' is one of those dancefloor secret weapons I love when I'm wearing my DJ hat... errr Headphones I mean. This was written by 'Christopher Tracey' - a pseudonym used by Prince, it was the name of his character in 'Under a Cherry Moon'.

blog post Soft Cell - Tainted Love (12" Mix)
Posted in Records on Sep 30, 2005 at 3:32 PM

One of the few cases where an 'Extended' mix really became a different record, I mean really different, halfway through the awesome 12" mix Marc Almond starts singing the classic Motown track 'Where Did Our Love Go'.

Probably the most famous trance record ever and it came together from a somewhat unlikely collection of artists -

* The vocal is by Sarah McLachlan,  best known for consistent rotation on thousands of AOR stations

* Delerium is a side project of Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber from synth industrial rockers Front Line Assembly

* Tiesto is persistenly voted 'Best DJ in The World' - mostly because he plays mainstream trance records in Europe. Not technically the best by a long shot, but he's still stands tall in an ocean of crap trance DJ's. He made history in 2004 by DJ'ing for the opening ceremony of the Olympics in Athens.

I imagine there are trance addicts out there who think the lyrics are deep and meaningfull. I think of it as a record that can't fail to make the candy ravers get all emotional when I play it.

Finally released after what seems like an age, I was playing this out loud back in the spring. Featuring Kurt Wagner of Lambchop on vocals this is a prime time big room choon that has that magic X-Press 2 crossover appeal. Love It

blog post The Backbeat Band - Twist & Shout
Posted in Records on Sep 29, 2005 at 9:00 AM

Pedigree grunge collective perform the best version of this song. The Backbeat band were put together to perform covers of rock classics, in the style of the Beatles playing at the Cavern Club in Hamburg. The band consisted of Greg Dulli of the Afghan Whigs, Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum, Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, Dave Grohl of Nirvana (before the Foo Fighters inception), and Mike Mills of R.E.M. All for the Ian Softley's 1994 biopic - Backbeat - the actors got to mime along to this awesome selection of top notch covers.

And Skye Loves Dancing to It.

blog post Mr Fingers - Can You Feel It
Posted in Records on Sep 27, 2005 at 6:34 PM

I've already talked about 2 records which form the origins of house music, but, with this classic track Larry Heard aka Mr Fingers gave house music its creation myth.

In the beginning, there was Jack, and Jack had a groove.
And from this groove came the groove of all grooves.
And while one day viciously throwing down on his box, Jack boldy declared,

"Let there be house!" and house music was born.

I am, you see,
I am the creator, and this is my house!
And, in my house there is only house music. But, I am not so
selfish because once you enter my house it then becomes OUR house and
OUR house music!" And, you see, no one can own house because
house music is a universal language, spoken and understood by all.

You see, house is a feeling that no one can understand really unless
you're deep into the vibe of house. House is an uncontrollable
desire to jack your body. And, as I told you before, this is
our house and our house music. And in every house, you
understand, there is a keeper. And, in this house, the keeper
is Jack. Now some of you who might wonder.

Who is Jack, and what is it that Jack does?

Jack is the one who gives you the power to jack your body!
Jack is the one who gives you the power to do the snake.
Jack is the one who gives you the key to the wiggly worm.
Jack is the one who learns you how to walk your body.
Jack is the one that can bring nations and nations of all
Jackers together under one house.

You may be black, you may be white; you may be Jew or Gentile.
It don't make difference in our House.

And this is fresh!

So you see all that stuff I said about Frankie Knuckles, Jamie Principle and Jessie Saunders is just blasphemy, this is the truth - it has been written in the footsteps of ravers across dancefloors all over the world.

Amen!

blog post Mr Oizo - Flat Beat
Posted in Records on Sep 27, 2005 at 11:47 AM

I've mentioned in the past that the Levis commercials in the UK had an inordinate amount of hit making power, sometimes this power was misused (Stiltskin, Babylon Zoo) and in other cases the choices were so inspired as to be deserving of medals for service to the improvement of music appreciation. Such was the case with 'Flat Beat' which came from a series of commercials featuring a small yellow puppet - 'Flat Eric' and his 'driver' (who is of course wearing whatever veriety of jeans they were promoting). The music sounds like a sonic interpretation of a factory production line, clunky, grindy, stuttering, minimalist and irresistably groovy - yes that's righty, a jeans commercial was able to make a number one records out of a minimal techno track - a genre that is usually happy to be hidden out of the way of chart attention.

Mr Oizo is Quentin Dupieux who not only created the music, but also directed the video and commercials. He's also produced videos for fellow frenchmen Laurent Garnier and Alex Gopher, and is signed to Laurent's F-Communications Label.

blog post Roxy Music - Avalon
Posted in Records on Sep 26, 2005 at 10:07 AM

Bryan Ferry is 60 today! Good god! He still wears a suit like a pro however, I mean when it came to rock stars wearing suits Bryan Ferry was in a league of his own.

Avalon was the bands last album, by 1982 they'd shrunk to only 3 core members supported by a variety of session performers. The sound of this album is different from their previous work, with the jagged musical arrangements giving way to immaculately formed soundscapes. Nothing demonstrates this more than the title track with it's signature moment - Bryan chanting 'Avalon' while the silky smooth voice of Yanick Etienne voyages all over the scale as if she's on her way to the mythical land itself.
