A fantastic singalong moment, so good that Skye likes to try singing along, so we make sure she's taking all her vitamins. The music is familiar, stylisticly similar to a million other radio friendly rock anthems, but the lyrical themes come from places not usually frequented by those dopplegangers. It always leaves me smiling, especially if Skye is trying to sing along.

blog post Alter Ego - Rocker
Posted in Records on Jul 29, 2006 at 6:24 PM

I was listening to the Annie Mac shows' second birthday party episode in the office yesterday and this was cutting its way through the speakers, Katya quite rightfully complained and asked me to cut the volume. It *is* one of the more annoying records of recent years with high pitched squeaks riding roughshod over the crunch sounds that might be regarded as the hookline, great for peaktime clubbing in darkened eastern european basements, not great for the imeem office. Alter Ego are producers Roman Flügel & Jörn Elling Wuttke - Roman is also responsible for the equally annoying club monster 'Gehts Noch', so he's giving Josh Wink a run for his money in the incredibly annoying club anthem stakes.

blog post Massive Attack Vs Mad Professor - Karmacoma
Posted in Records on Jul 29, 2006 at 6:17 PM

The Mad Professor transformed Massive Attacks album 'Protection' from a trip-hop masterpiece to a dubtastic masterpiece. This is the only case I can think of where an artist commisioned a single producer to remix an entire album, a whole album, placed in the hands, nay, the evil clutches of the Mad Professor who waved his reverb and bass wand over everything to create one of the trippiest dub collections of modern times. Remixes collections are usually for hardcore fans only, usually bundled with 'Greatest Hits' collections as an attempt to get the fans who already have all the hits to pony up for the greatest hits collection. But this stands above all those cash ins as a fine amalgamation of musical concepts in its own right.

blog post Lazyboy - Underwear Goes Inside The Pants
Posted in Records on Jul 29, 2006 at 6:09 PM

Or for those people who only understand the queens english: Lazy B - 'Pants go Inside the Trousers' ;)
Seriously though, it's another one of those deceptively simple records, sampling comedian Greg Giraldo's stream of consciousness as he discusses drugs, the homeless problem and 'the obesity epidemic'. Lazyboy is producer Søren Nystrøm who has previously scored huge hits with the Danish euro-pop group Aqua, yes, the producer of this downtepo social commentary is also responsible for 'Barbie Girl. All is forgiven, at last you have redeemed yourself Søren, and you didn't have to be the butt of an ongoing joke in Office Space to do it.

blog post Michael Bolton
Posted in Music Musings on Jul 29, 2006 at 6:00 PM

You know, I never liked him or his music, and I especially hated his pointless cover versions of soul classics. I thought the world would be no worse off without his contribution to popular culture, but last weekend I realized he had done one great service to mankind.
Michael Bolton's existence can be justified because he make Office Space a funnier movie, let us be thankful for this.

Figure out what the next page is and type in the URL....

So far it only goes up to thirty, but I've had to look up obsucre regional languages, archaic encoding systems and event telnet directly to the web server to get clues.

blog post Crack Found On Space Shuttle
Posted in Random Stuff on Jul 04, 2006 at 5:07 PM

It's amazing how my mind misinterpreted this SF Chronicle headline when I first read it. I mean I'd been following the launch coverage so I knew there was a crack in the external tank's foam insulation, but maybe it's because I'm living in Oakland now I immediately think of the other kind of crack. Clearly I wasn't the only person doing thie mental double take because they changed the headline to "Crack Found in Foam on Shuttle Fuel Tank"  a few hours later.

Of course I spent 5 years living in Ireland, and would think nothing of saying I'd had good craic last night and was a bit hungover.
