Sorry, Sorry (song)

"Sorry, Sorry" is a song by Korean boy band Super Junior. It was released as a digital single on March 9, 2009 and was later included as the title single in the group's third studio album, Sorry, Sorry, released on March 12, 2009.[2] This song was Super Junior's comeback single as a complete group since their subgroup advances in Mainland China and South Korea in 2008. It has been Super Junior's most successful single in the music charts, winning a total of 10 recognitions during the song's promotional period.



Song history

"Sorry, Sorry" was written by Youngjin Yoo, who was also responsible for writing Super Junior's SMP[clarification needed]-genre "Don't Don," the title track of Super Junior's second album. The song is a "polished and trendy" dance song, with influences of American funk and contemporary R&B, stimulated with a heavy electronic beat that is the genre of "urban minimal funky."[1]

The lyrics of "Sorry, Sorry" deals with the regret of letting go a love relationship. "Sorry" (쏘리) and "shawty" (쇼리) are redundantly used throughout the whole song.[1]

Promotion and reception

Since March 13, Super Junior has been performing "Sorry, Sorry" on the music programs Music Bank, Music Core, and Popular Songs three times a week. Promotional performances lasted for two full months, ending its last performance on May 16, 2009 on Music Core. The first out-of-country performance of "Sorry, Sorry" was in Bejing, China on May 1, 2009 in the Beijing National Stadium. The single was also featured on Perez Hilton's blog.[3]

"Sorry, Sorry" peaked at #1 on M.NET's M!Countdown chart in just a week. "Sorry, Sorry" achieved its first recognition as the #1 song of KBS's Music Bank monthly pop chart on March 27, 2009 after only two weeks in the charts.[4] The single won again for the April pop chart,[5] and had two consecutive wins on the weekly pop chart in the first two weeks of May.[6] "Sorry, Sorry" also won Mutizen song at SBS's Popular Songs for three consecutive weeks, earning a "Triple Crown" for the first time in the group's career.[7] The single also became a song of the week on Mnet's M! Countdown in April 9 and April 23, although Super Junior was not present at the program to receive their awards.[8] "Sorry, Sorry" remained within top 10 in Mnet's music chart for another 12 weeks.[9]



Music video

The music video was filmed from February 29, 2009 to March 1, 2009.[10] A 30 second teaser of the video was released on Super Junior's official iple site on March 6, 2009,[1] and the complete video was released on March 13, the same day as Super Junior's comeback performance on KBS's Music Bank. The video is SM Entertainment's first anamorphic formatted music video with a widescreen aspect ratio of 2.39:1.[11] Throughout most of the video, only eleven members are seen dancing to most of the choreography, although the video does include all thirteen members of Super Junior. Heechul appears to be in the dance towards the end of the video, and Kibum only appears in solo shots.

The video starts off with a woman's eye peeping through a key hole. She then pulls up her skirt, exposing her legs, and Super Junior member Kibum blindfolds himself; a small flame is burning an enclosed envelope, which is sealed with sealing wax. The woman then touches her lips and pulls on her pearl necklace. This scene is then engulfed to blackness and zooms to Super Junior, who are seen posing side-by-side in front of a white screen. Han Geng leads the group into a gentle sliding pose, and then they start dancing. In the song's dance bridge the members are tutting, with Eunhyuk in the lead. The whole music video is in black and white. The dance is choreographed by Nick Bass as well as Trent Dickens, who is known for working with international stars like Usher and Justin Timberlake.[12]

"너라고 (It's You)" is a digital single by Korean boy band Super Junior. It is the second promotional single for the group's third studio album Sorry, Sorry and was digitally released on May 11, 2009. Three new tracks were added to the single on May 14, 2009, the same day as the physical release of the repackaged version of Sorry, Sorry.



Song history

"It's You" is written and produced by E-Tribe, the same composer who wrote several chart-topping songs. The collaboration was first announced on April 21, in which the group described the song to be "a mellow but trendy dance song" and very unlike the lively songs that E-Tribe has previously written for female singers.[1] The song incorprates heavy electronic influences to a MIDI sequence, and it is expected to earn the same success as the urban funk song "Sorry, Sorry."[1]

Promotion and chart performance

On May 9, 2009 the full-length single of "It's You" and screen shots of the respective music video were leaked on the Internet. Despite the leak, the single was officially released as a digital single on May 11, 2009, and quickly became the #1 song on Cyworld after only four hours of release.[2] Two days later, the single reached top 5 on Mnet's Top 300 Chart, ranking #4. The first promotional performance for "It's You" was on May 17, 2009 on the SBS music program, Popular Songs (인기가요). On May 22, "It's You" was performed on Music Bank for the first, followed by the song's first award as #1 song of the week on the Music Bank weekly K-Chart.



Music video

The music video was directed by Su-Hyun Cho and filmed in a studio in Ilsan, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea in late April 2009.[3] It premiered on the evening of May 12, 2009 on Cyworld with a positive reception. The music video was originally planned to be released on the same day as the repackaged album release, but because an unfinished version of it was illegally leaked on the morning of May 12, SM Entertainment decided to push forward the release time to 7 P.M. of that same day.[4] There are slight differences in both versions. In the leaked unedited version, there are more scenes of Han Geng whispering the phrase "it's you" (너라고, Neorago) in Korean, while in the official release, those scenes are replaced with the Super Junior members assembling to their stools. Certain scenes are also shot at different angles, and more special effects are added into the dancing scenes.

A second version of the music video, which excludes the intercut sequences of choreographed dancing, was released on May 15, 2009. The video opens with a scene of a girl returning her ring to Kibum. A loud heart beat sounds when Kibum painfully walks away with the ring in his hand. Kibum passes by Han Geng, who somberly looks down at his phone. He whispers "It's you, it's you, it's only you for me, it's you" in Korean and walks away. Donghae appears behind him and walks down the street, followed by Kyuhyun who walks after him. Kyuhyun walks pass a car parked in a street intersection, and Yesung walks out of the street. Leeteuk appears behind Yesung, playing with a necklace. As he walks toward the end of the street, Siwon hesitantly walks toward a phone booth. Ryeowook rushes pass him holding a bouquet of flowers. As he smells the flowers, he whips pass Kang-in who is sitting down at a table angrily reading a letter. Kyuhyun appears again and quickly unbuttons his jacket, checking the time on his watch. He walks by Eunhyuk, who is spraying grafitti on the wall with the words "Only 4 U." Kang-in walks into a coffee shop and passes by Sungmin who is writing a letter. Shindong walks out of the coffee shop, passing by Ryeowook who has been waiting in front of the shop. Ryeowook angrily throws down his bouquet of flowers, looks at his watch, and walks away. He passes by Han Geng, who is emotionally talking through his phone. Han Geng walks pass Yesung and Eunhyuk doing a handshake in an alleyway, and Yesung walks pass Sungmin, who is now mailing his letter. Kyuhyun quickly walks pass Sungmin and passes by Heechul in the middle of the street, who is sitting on his motorcycle and taking off his helmet. The rest of the Super Junior members appear walking by Heechul, and Siwon is now shouting through the phone. He slams the phone back and hits the phone booth. Donghae angrily walks by and steps back as the camera pans toward the rest of the Super Junior members standing behind Heechul. As Heechul whispers the same words Han Geng whispered in the beginning of the video, Kibum holds his ring to his heart and the rest of the members follow.
